Virgiling on the vandijkulous

Didn't @mark1975 claim coutinho was 100% signing for Chelsea this summer after being tipped off by an ITK ?

Also Ladbrokes suspended betting on casillas joining a few weeks back...

Nope. He suggested that based on his info that it was a logical next step

Yeah, well not Chelsea or anyone exactly, just that there was an incident which linked him to London quite heavily. It could have been something or nothing, relating to a family member or friend (for example), it's an odd one. I'm thinking it's probably just that, because he dealt with it himself and didn't seem bothered people knew who he was. If there was something in it, I'm thinking he would sensibly have got someone else to handle it for him.

A couple of things for me...

We could have got him from Celtic for about a 5th of the price we will pay.

His injury problems.

We could probably put some of that money towards a cb and someone else and be no worse off.

The whole Southampton thing again is a bit boring.

Good player, obviously, but there's too many question marks for me and the price is an awful lot, regardless of the market being insane these days.

Not getting him from Celtic was a big mistake, I agree. I wanted us to sign him when he left.

Wouldnt call that ankle injury "injury problems". Think he's been relatively injury free bar that. Hopefully he's ready for pre season.

50 mill is way to much. 15 mill at least.
But on a positive note we're getting a top Clas CB pairing, close to the best in the league.
Thats what wins you titles, and they're both relatively young.
Could be our starting CBs for 5-7 years.

I'm quite open to being contradicted about this, but I do think this is the signing that has a symbolic resonance to it that will help us. We've seen several top, or top-rated, players tempted to join us only to slip away to other clubs in recent years. That surely has a certain impact on our players. Maybe not massive, but it's a negative thing. Similarly, to see us come out on top when battling for one of the most coveted players of this transfer window probably boosts morale right through the club, as well as - maybe - help tip the balance of other players we're trying to sign. Of course it's fair enough to say 'that's a hell of a lot of money to spend for a symbolic impact,' because it is, but this does feel to me like a very good moment.

Let us in the loop Mark.
All I got from that was that people know who he is, he's dealt with it, but might have sensibly had others dealing with it. And it links him to London.

Regarding the injury, I hope so. It seems a pretty serious injury, however.

Also, I haven't watched much of him, but could this not be another case of the club and the system suiting him better at Southampton? As we saw first hand when it turned out that 26 weeks of the year, Lovren doubles up as Bobo the clown.

This is exactly how I see it. If we have been interested in a player for the past lot of years, and if Chelsea, City, United, and even Arsenal got interested, we could forget about it. We were not going to compete. It makes a statement if we bring in a player that they want. Of course it does.

This is 100% my fear, that and the obscene price, I do agree with GK though in that this is a great statement which will hopefully help the club in the long run.

I watched him at St Marys in the league cup game when we lost..... he won everything that night and we didnt really get a sniff of the ball when it was a 1 on 1 against him.

Crazy money no doubt but 15 years ago, the most expensive defender was signed for £30m.
With all the increased TV revenue (multiplied by almost 6 times), investments, sponsorship etc. it is little surprise how astronomic figures in transfer fees and wages have become.

This is usually the part where someone will start rationalising paying 75m for Van Dijk.

Because there are no other options who will sign for us. He's premiership proven etc etc

I was a few days early it seems.

60m on a good centre back who hasn't played for 6 months on account of a lisfranc procedure.

Our riskiest signing ever

Maddock:

Liverpool have won the heavyweight fight with Manchester City and Chelsea for Virgil van Dijk .

The Reds will make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in football history, after the Holland international confirmed he has chosen them ahead of the two Premier League giants.

All three clubs have been talking with the Southampton star for the past few weeks, as they attempted to sell their vision of the future to the centre half.

But it was the charisma and enthusiasm of boss Jurgen Klopp that persuaded Van Dijk to choose the Anfield project, with people close to the player suggesting he was impressed by the passion the German coach displayed.

The Reds have declined to comment on any speculation surrounding the player, but we can reveal after Van Dijk made his decision, officials from the Merseyside club are now in talks with Southampton over the fee.

And we understand that Liverpool - who have so far yet to make an official offer to Saints - will have to match the £60m that Manchester City were prepared to pay for the 25 year old.

Talks are ongoing, but Liverpool WILL be prepared to match City's offer, and then thrash out a contract that could be worth £200,000 a week to Van Dijk.

The previous world record fee for a defender was the £50m Chelsea paid to bring David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge last summer, but if Liverpool do reach City's offer, then it will smash that figure.

Van Dijk has spent two past two months deliberating his future, after being informed that the three Premier League big guns were in a fight to sign him, with Arsenal also interested.

He has spoken to all three clubs, but even though Liverpool were considered as outsiders for his signature, they won the race because of the vision Klopp sold to the defender.

The German made clear Van Dijk would be the kingpin of his team, and he painted the same picture he offered to Philippe Coutinho - that the player could become an Anfield legend, with the chance to have statues built in his honour. [Calm down mate!!!]

Klopp pointedly suggested that at Chelsea or City, the Dutchman would be just another player fighting for a place, but at Liverpool he could become the ground-rock of the club's push back to the summit of the game.

We understand talks with Southampton will continue this week, and Liverpool hope to thrash out a deal that will secure Van Dijk's signature in the coming days.

But the defender has made clear to Saints that Anfield is his preferred destination and he won't countenance a move elsewhere, which means a deal WILL be completed.

Liverpool’s summer spending won’t stop there. They have already made a £27m offer for Roma’s Mohamed Salah, and after sealing the deal for Van Dijk, are likely to return in an attempt to thrash out a £35m agreement.

And they have also not given up hope on a spectacular £50m capture of Naby Keita, even though his club Red Bull Leizig insisted yesterday they will resist any offers for the Guinea international midfielder this summer.

I think I'd prefer it if we beat Chelsea, City or United or whoever to a player that everyone was really dead excited about us signing, an amazing match-winning attacker or world class midfielder.

But we needed another CB, and he's a good player. Just not £50m good.

Agree absolutely. It is important to be seen as able to compete with City and Chelsea in the market and come out on top, people will believe there has to be a strong reason behind decisions such as these and it paints the club in a progressive, determined, light.

If both this and Salah happen that is going to impress not only potential want-aways or in-demands (Can and Coutinho) but any player on our radar. Keita for example, I'm sure he'd love to play with our attack ahead of him and VVD and Matip behind him.

Liverpool have yet to agree a fee for Van Dijk but are willing to meet an asking price that may reach £60m for their main transfer target. They are also prepared to match City’s offer of a contract worth around £200,000-a-week for the former Celtic and Groningen defender, who will become Liverpool’s record signing and highest paid player once the deal is complete

I read on another forum that he cancelled his house and schooling, which set off some alarm bells. But he apparently set that up somewhere else or something. So it was "nothing" in the end.
