Liverpool scouts travelled to Denmark to watch the £8 million-rated target, who is out of contract next year, but were left disappointed, after the midfielder opted not to play.
“I didn’t know Liverpool [scouts] were in the stadium,” Elm told De Telegraaf. “But if so, too bad for them.
“I want to play as well as possible and will start thinking about my future after the Euros. When the focus on playing is gone, I can start thinking about my future. I’ve got one year left on my contract here at Alkmaar and I don’t have to leave.”
Elm, who has been a long-term Liverpool target, was also forced to defend his decision not to play.
He continued: “There was no other option for me. End of discussion.
“There will always be a new match, but not a new first daughter. Everybody can say or think what they want but I wanted to be with my girlfriend and daughter.
“That is the only good decision. I don’t know why I’m even standing here to defend myself.”
