Post match Thoughts - City (A)

He's right. The officials were abysmal.
The offside call was shocking, and the yellow for Suarez was unwarranted.

Apart from those (only one of which was Mason), did Mason do anything particularly bad? The tug on Suarez wasn't a penalty - that's commonplace in the league, and we'd have had at least 3 penalties going against us from Skrtel if the same standard were applied.

Disappointing result, but a fairly fucking decent time to be a Liverpool supporter these days, so it's hard to complain.

A manager that can set a side out, shorn of 2 or 3 of our best players and still take the game right to the best side in the league. At their ground. No complaints about the match, or the ref, sometimes you just lose games like that. It's shit, but it happens.

We're a good side, and it's terrific to watch us. Been many's a year since I've typed that.

It is a downer just like a hangover after a Christmas feast.
Now for the next game. Or two.

The City supporters I know we're all pretty relieved at the result - they agreed it was pretty much the best performance by an away team they'd faced in a while.

We still lack a little bit in therms of being clinical, but we're getting there.

Same team & performance against Chelsea please - although it'll be tough - they're well organised.

Eh .. lacking in being clinical ? perhaps if you watched today's game but I think we have a high goal scoring record. I would just say we are the best team in the league along with City. We had them shitting and I hope we really do shit piles on them when they come to our place.

I'm gonna repeat myself what I said earlier - City won only because we GIFTED them the game.

They look pretty ordinary to me.

Our pass-and-move were, at times, breathtaking. Especially in the final 3rd.

I still think our game has picked up tremendously ever since Stevie had been out of the side. You can see Brodgers sets us up to play fast counter-attack movements, and Stevie slows us down with his noticeable lack of pace and over-played Hollywood passes. Also, I noticed yesterday we hardly played any long balls, which was evermore impressive, knowing how well we tend to succumb to that pressure of hitting them long balls when under pressure.

Henderson has grown up so much in the last couple of games. Once he adds goals to his game, he will be world-class material.

And you were among the greatest doom-mongers prior to this game, Ryan O'Hare.
You had resigned us to a battering - so its refreshing to hear from you that you think we're starting to grow a set.

As one of the commentators mentioned - once he adds football to his athleticism he will be terrific.
I think that he has already stepped into the breach and shone. That ball into the box that Johnson eventually fluffed was top drawer.

Not the first time they've had a 'helping hand' in big games: http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/a...-go-against-them-at-manchester-city-pictures/

One more point though - I hope the FA is mature enough to admit that Rodgers has every right to fume at that decision. In the NBA, Blake Griffin was ejected from a game recently and it was a terrible decision. Last night, the NBA admitted it was a bad call. If they need to fine him, or warn him, ok. But in such a big game, a call that wasn't even close (the shirt pull on Suarez wasn't a peno and though he missed the foul on Lescott, it happens) smacks of something very dirty ...

Johnson's been terrible for a while and hit and miss throughout his career. People post terrified thoughts prematch about who's playing leftback this week and how they're going to get raped, yet they still consistently out perform the gaping hole on the right hand side most weeks. Baffling really.

Other than that, I thought Cissokho and Sakho did well. We, as a team, performed admirably and played some stunning stuff at times, probably the best performance City have come up against (again) this season.

As said before the game though, our Achilles heal is set pieces and we're up against two of the strongest sides in the league on that note, this weekend. Skrtel needs to sort his shit out when it comes to wrestling instead of defending the ball, despite the few brilliant interceptions he made. Johnson let's players ghost past him too easily - amazing how young Flanno gets this highlighted on the few occasions it happens, but Johnson can get away with it every week.

We can't be too disheartened, a few clear cut chances that would have won it on another day, a poor offside and a bit of fortune on their part. We've progressed magnificently and when it came down to it, we didn't have that extra ounce of quality on the bench.

The ref was a fucking joke, but then we knew that already, he's a clown.

Spot on Mark.
Johnson's been on and off throughout his carrer. Sadly, these past few weeks he's been off more often than being on. His contribution to the team last night was null (actually negative) - giving the ball away too often and letting people ghost past him too easily w/o making any significant contribution to our attack play. For me he was by far our weekest link last night, and judjing by his latest performances, unless he picks his game up quickly, the manager will need to think hard about the RB position.

Still extremely disappointed with the result yesterday. A draw would have been fair.
The lads did well and I can't really complain considering that we're missing at least two starters.
However, the lack of quality we have on the bench is a bit worrying. We don't have a single player on the bench who can come on and change the game for us.
Remember when some of us desperately used to beg Rafa to bring Babel on in the match threads? He did quite well at times, like scoring against Arsenal and Chelsea. At least he gave us hope.

Yeah Sturridge being out means we don't have anyone to make a difference (Sterling probably would have been on the bench if Sturridge played, which is a debate for another thread).
Just hope Ibe can keep improving.
Hopefully it'll be another January like last season.
No more Aspas's and Borini's please.

It's more obvious now why we need more firepower in the squad, we had little up our sleeve to make a difference from the bench,

We were contenders unlike City, Manure and Spurs who went there and got battered. YNWA.

Ok was going to post this last night but it was a long trek back and I wanted to refresh my view after some kip.

For the first ten minutes we looked a bit overawed and took time to settle. City didn't create much and for that we could be thankful. But we got in the game and with our high pressing tempo started to force the mistakes. We got a deserved lead and should have been two up if the Sterling chance had not have been so badly wrong.

Then we concede a free kick that was never a free kick and we give away a soft goal which the keeper could have done better with imo.

Their second came from us losing the ball forward and both our FB's were out of position. People blaming Skrtel are mad. Cissokho was out of position for the umpteenth time and this meant our CB's were totally exposed to the pace of their counter attack. Of course Mignolet should of stopped it.

The thing is, we didn't continue the same way we left off going into the second half. They sat and were happy to try and pick us off on the break. We didn't creat enough.

Ok the officials. Mason is a weak and poor ref. We got fuck all from him throughout the game and frankly when you see a player like Henderson haranguing him during the game and after the game you know what you were going to get. I'm not comfortable with the BR has handled it post game and he's going to be in trouble because he called the officials integrity into play. Of course I agree with him! But there's things you think and things you say. If he'd used the offside and the pen we didn't get and left it there then I think that would have been fair call.

Ok the players.

Mignolet - not a lot to do, but he messed up what he had.
Johnson - how many more halfarsed, couldn't be bothered performances do we have to put up with? He didn't defend much and he didn't attack much.
Skrtel - another good solid game. Forget the shirt holding, every CB is doing it.
Sakho - great in the first half, turned into Djimi Traore in the second, mainly because of our insistence to fuck around with it at the back!
Cissokho - he's not a footballer! He was shite.
Sterling - well, he showed his qualities today and against a good side. Intelligent running, better decision making and proper will to win. If only his full back had been equally bothered.
Lucas - struggled but did manage to break up the play and keep it simple
Allen - loads of work, got stuck and good passing under pressure. But in the final third his end product and first touch were abominable
Henderson - another great performance. Pressed, harried, prompted and probed and never stopped working. My MOTM
Coutinho - found space between the lines loads and a great finish for the goal. Thought he should of scored the other one.
Suarez - worked hard, linked the play. Made a monkey out of Kompany a couple of times and should have got more protection from the ref. However the swan dive in the box was embarassing.
Subs
Moses - fuck off you lazy cunt. Didn't even try. Fuck this cunt off asap.

Look at it this way. We're moaning that we didn't more. Away from home. Against City. A team who'd despatched 35 goals in their previous 8 home games.

If we'd shown more intent in the second half a point would have been the least we'd deserved.

We deserved a win yesterday. We created the better chances, were unlucky with the offside call and gave City a real match at the Etihad.

What cost us was making important mistakes at crucial times of the match and still not addressing our weaknesses from set-pieces.

We'll bounce back though because we're boss and we can do Chelsea.

'Skrtel - another good solid game. Forget the shirt holding, every CB is doing it.'

This is how i see it to, i have no real problem with it because as you say everyone does it and always has.

Skrtel seems to of been made a scapegoat for this type of defending recently, theres always 2 or 3 doing it when defending set pieces, its nothing new but for some reason Skrtel is getting highlighted for it.

If they start punishing us or anyone else then its going to open a massive can of worms because if you punish it then you have to punish it all the time meaning there wil be half a dozen penalties in every match played.

Why aren't we making a big deal about the duel Skrtel lost against Kompany that led to the first goal?

'Cause I remember a certain Dane doing the same thing when we were 4-0 up against Norwich and all hell broke loose.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Thought it at the time last night why was Skrtel marking Kompany all match?

Kompany is Citys biggest threat from set pieces so why wasn't Sakho who is better than Skrtel in the air marking him at set pieces?

Can't remember was Sahko was on Toure? thats maybe fair enough then but Kompany is still the biggest threat and our best player in the air should really be on him, its not the first time Kompany has had joy from us at corners.

anyways, gutted we didnt get at least a point but it proved we should be right up there this season, hopefully we twat chelski now
