Virgil the Captain.

Dreambeliever

Will he believe again?

It feels like when all the things that have led to us having such a strong season are mentioned, Virgil as captain rarely if ever gets a look in. Henderson (rightly imo) got a heap of praise for the part he played as a leader even if the rumour was he wasn’t the best trainer.

I can imagine Virgil takes no shit and demands the best everyday from everyone on the training pitch.

He won us Klopps last trophy as captain and is leading us to our best chance of winning the title since the last triumph, adding our CL success and run in the league cup, how much praise should be attributed to him?

If we win the league I feel he shoots right up the list of our best captains.

I feel he is massively under represented in the MOTM threads because he is Virgil. We get a strong defensive display and his partner at CB tends to be thought higher than Virgil. Especially when it comes to Gomez. This is despite him still being 3rd.

Yeah… he’s like a consistent 7 (or 8 if want) - but he’s always that - he’s such a machine.

You just don’t expect him to lose a dual or even misplace a pass or mistime a tackle…. ever!!

It’s why Mo doesn’t get MotM all the time despite being or main outlet for goals and assists and effectively winning matches.

Whereas someone like Gravy and his performances this season are just wow!! because they’re so much removed than his previous form.

Trent suffers from it too… if he goes, we’ll start to miss his creativity very quickly too.

He's obviously our most important player.
That being said, one of the reasons he doesn't get a lot of points in MOTM threads( other than him being a defender), is that Virg has a tendency to start coasting when we're in the lead. A good example is the 6-3 win against Spurs. We're up by 4 goals and Virge just starts pacing himself.

I also think vvd is a very proactive defender, and that's inherently less glamorous, whereas Gomez is very reactive, so it looks very much like he's involved more.

VVD is a victim of his own brilliance

Salah can get all the goals in the world, but the single biggest transformative signing of the last 30 years that eventually led to us winning a PL and consistently challenging and being in the top 4 has been VVD. The one season where he (rightly in my view) took the foot off was the Qatar WC year and we ended up 5th.
Extending his contract is more important than the other two by a country mile.
