Post match Thoughts - City (A)

Two defensive clangers and a wild shot are what did us. We fought hard but I hope we are not knackered for the weekend game. Other than that, we fought them hard and gave as good as we got.

A fit Sturridge could have been the difference. The lack of a game changer off the bench is still a problem but we played well for large periods. Sakho had one wobbly spell and Johnson was absolutely awful

Coming in to the City and Chelsea games, I'd rather have had 1 win and 1 loss rather than 2 draws. As long as we beat Chelsea, we'll be fine. It's just a three point difference from the top, and if we beat Chelsea, we'll be up to third at least on Sunday.

A few thoughts

* Mingolet - it happens. It's unfortunate he didn't really have anything 'proper' to save bar that. Pity.
* GlenJo - Forgetting the half chance, I thought he was poor. Lacks energy, poor decisions and just looks like half the player he could. I wish we were playing a weaker side as I'd bench him if I was Rodgers. He is a liability.
* Cisshoko - solid game but he puts his heads down and runs and a few times that hurt us when he should have just passed to Coutinho. He's not as shite as I thought he was but please send him back in Jan and gives his minutes to Enrique / Flanno / Smith
* Sakho - The first half, his passing was excellent. It was causing City tremendous problems. Second half, he just became very jittery ... I guess it happens too, but when a player loses confidence like this, why keep on passing him the ball? Just keep it away from him for a bit ...
* Skrtel - three excellent last ditch tackles - yes, but his positioning was awful on Negredo's goal.
* Lucas - has he got slower? Something isn't right here - he just looks off the pace.
* Allen - solid game but a better touch earlier on and he is 1on1 with Hart
* Henderson - great game again. He cannot be dropped when Gerrard comes back.
* Coutinho - he was excellent but really really terrible miss which would have given us momentum and I think a win.
* Sterling - excellent game ... He should have had a hat trick in this game ... He is really on an upward curve now and I hope he continues to work at it as he's playing fantastic.
* Suarez - tough game but was still unplayable at times ... Almost won us two penos and that yellow on his was a weak card.

Rodgers - I'm impressed with the team and how they played today.

Negredo - Very impressed with him. really gets into great positions and I didn't realize how fucking fast he was. He'll destroy Barcelona.

Last but not least - that offsides call STILL is pissing me off. If it was close, ok. But it was so blatantly onsides that it seems almost dirty. Mason had a decent game imo.

Very proud of this team ... They played with the best team in England for 90 minutes and really had them on the back foot for many periods. Better finishing and officiating, and we're probably up 3/4-1 at half time ... I hope we smash Mourinho as we really cannot afford anything but a positive result having fallen behind the Gooners by 3 points.

COME ON YOU REDS.

A win against Chelsea now becomes crucial.
Still in saying that, not many, if any teams go to the Etihad and play as well as we did. We can take a lot of positives out of this game.

I'm usually a fan of Johnson, but today he was shite - and worse still looked like he couldn't be arsed...

We did a decent job of competing today; we went into this game knowing it was going to be a tough challenge and put up a reasonable fight. But for some poor finishing and officiating, we might even have earned a point. The gap in quality and class in some areas is clear.

I thought Sterling, Henderson and Allen gave good accounts of themselves again. Though his positioning wasn't the best and he lost out to Kompany for their equalizer, Skrtel played an important role in making some crucial tackles and/or interceptions that could've turned into goalscoring shots for them. Sakho's performance was odd - a beast in the first half but he seemed to tire or lose confidence in the second and made mistakes galore. The fullbacks and Moses - well, I think "what the fuck" sums them up.

Mignolet - it happens, its incredibly shite for it to happen in a crucial game but all goalkeepers do it and have done this season, as long as it doesn't turn into the Joe Hart disease (it won't) then chin up and get on with it.

We lost a game that we could have won, against a better team. Let's just get a result against Chelsea and I'll be content.

He's been shite for months.

Yeah and it looked like Sakho caught his disease there for a bit, what was all that about? totally out of the blue, his head went there.

Dont like slagging players to much for the odd bad game or mistake but Johnson is wearing really really thin now, if its not a bad pass its a bad first touch or some type of brain fart, its getting really annoying and hes letting the team down who are all playing well.

He had three of these (on Yaya Toure, on Negredo and on Milner or Kolarov late) but he was average (at best) on corners and I thought his positioning at times was terrible, which necessitated some of those tackles ..

In general the team play well from an attacking point of view. But rodgers needs to focus a lot more on the defensive side of things. Looks like we don't work on it at all. On another note i thought lucas and johnson were shit. We need better than both of them.

We gifted them the game. Oh, so did the ref and the dozy linesman too.

Not too long ago, we were struggling with scoring goals. Nowadays, we struggle to keep a clean sheet, or not score own goals, or not let in silly goals.

Sakho was suddenly a bundle of nerves in the 2nd half, I had actually thought Djimi Traore kidnapped him. The way he crumbled was unbelievable yet pitiful.

Skrtel - well, he's simply not good enough long term. If we get into the CL next year, we will be punished severely with him and Sakho marshaling our defense.

Our defence which has always been our strength the last few years, have now become our Achilles heel, and its becoming increasingly painful to watch.

Felt at times as if Sakho was "Coffin Cornered" when passed to. Skrtel would fizz him the ball when there was almost no space at all, Cissokho would be all the way up the wing, and not enough time/space to turn around and pass it back to the keeper. Reminds me a bit of Downing sometimes where instead of picking out a good pass, he'd pick out the easy pass, regardless of how that could affect build up play. Skrtel should know better than to pass it to Sakho when he has a yard of space and no options.

Sakho still should've done better though, but outside of those few minutes, I thought he was excellent. Definitely feels like Sakho is the one that actually pushes us forward in attack by picking a key pass, and the opposition are starting to figure that out by putting more pressure on him.

I thought Coutinho was poor outside of his goal, which he took well. Overdribbled and shot from poor positions a few times, and didn't create a whole lot. We saw a bit of this in the preseason, hopefully he bounces back.

I'm starting to think we need a RB more than a LB, Cissokho/Flanagan/Enrique look significantly better than Johnson, which is especially inexcusable considering the wages he's on. Cissokho actually looked decent today, and did enough against Navas, but Glenjo was invisible most of the game, and fluffed his chance. Hopefully BR takes note and actually makes a change.

Johnson wasn't as bad as you lot make out. At least you'd notice him on the pitch, even if he messed up numerous times.

Lucas, however,........was he even playing ?

Good observations.

Remember, though, that Flanagan is a right back. And we have a good left-back in waiting in Robinson.

I actually think it's the centre of defence where we have genuine quality problems. Not convinced with last-ditch tackling when said tackle is making up for an earlier elementary error. And, yet, even with those problems, we ought to have got a point at least and maybe more had Sterling, Coutinho and Johnson been more composed. Remember this side did the skanks, Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle but will feel that it was in a genuine contest today. And it's still only two points ahead of us.

I'll take the overall performance if not the result to the Bridge.

I thought both full backs were poor today and that was the main problem we have with moving the ball around fluently. Cissokho just ran toward Coutinho sometimes and didn't show very well for Sakho. Johnson seriously might as well not be playing at all these days, we'd be better off with some kid.

Agreed, it shouldn't have come down to just that (officials, missed chances) and he's saved us god knows how many points already this season.

Johnson's been terrible for a while and hit and miss throughout his career. People post terrified thoughts prematch about who's playing leftback this week and how they're going to get raped, yet they still consistently out perform the gaping hole on the right hand side most weeks. Baffling really.

Other than that, I thought Cissokho and Sakho did well. We, as a team, performed admirably and played some stunning stuff at times, probably the best performance City have come up against (again) this season.

As said before the game though, our Achilles heal is set pieces and we're up against two of the strongest sides in the league on that note, this weekend. Skrtel needs to sort his shit out when it comes to wrestling instead of defending the ball, despite the few brilliant interceptions he made. Johnson let's players ghost past him too easily - amazing how young Flanno gets this highlighted on the few occasions it happens, but Johnson can get away with it every week.

We can't be too disheartened, a few clear cut chances that would have won it on another day, a poor offside and a bit of fortune on their part. We've progressed magnificently and when it came down to it, we didn't have that extra ounce of quality on the bench.

The ref was a fucking joke, but then we knew that already, he's a clown.

Not entirely convinced by Robinson, but at times it feels like we need competent more than anything else at the fullback slots. Flanagan did that at LB, and that makes our play so much better.

The thing that sucks about Glenjo is that he's a form player. He'll be awful for around half a season, and then be amazing against Chelsea, making him "undroppable" again. Have to break that cycle at some point.

Same goes for Skrtel I would say.

Rodgers is going all in with the officials in his presser.
Cue us getting a dodgy penalty at SB

I thought 2 points out of these 2 games would be excellent before they started, and I'm not surprised we get beat at city. But I thought minus the defence, we put up a really good showing of ourselves, we were not outclassed by a team worth 100's of millions, and we were very unlucky to not get at least a draw.
I think it's a losers mentality to be happy with your performance even though you've lost, but I honestly think we're not on the same level as these oil rich cunts, so we can't beat ourselves up over this loss. We've put up a better showing there than any other team in the league, and they were lucky.

Onwards and upwards. Play like that against chelski and we'll pick up some points.
