Moreno (and To A Lesser Extent, Sakho)

I think Sakho has been and will come good again, but he's been unconvincing since he returned from injury. Not helped by being part of a wonky defensive unit (into which his own poor form feeds into).

The Sakho-Toure pairing has to go; they don't half get in each other's way. Zero chemistry as a central partnership. Lovren -- unbelievably -- looks the best centreback under Klopp so far.

Moreno had a poor game against Norwich, theres no question. But that penalty looked like a dive. There was some contact, but more like Naismith moving his foot towards Moreno

I think he's actually a left-sided midfielder rather than left back. Reminds me of Gareth Bale who had Redknapp tearing his hair out and damn near sold him (to us, if reports are to be believed). And the an injury forced Red Knapp to deploy Bale against Benitez's Inter ..

Thats how i see him as well although its unlikely he'll ever be as good.

If we were playing a 4-4-2 he'd be perfect on the left side of midfield. But not wide left in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1

We're reasonably okay at RB, Gomez will surely be given the chance to make one CB place his own, that leaves one CB and one LB place up for grabs next season. Flanno is the one defender we've got who'll try to organise the back four, and he would certainly be better at LB than Moreno (and he's not as slow as some think - he was played as a left-sided wing back a few times in the ressies expressly to develop that aspect of his game). I think we do need that statement of intent from Klopp to go out and get a big, brave, commanding centre back.

Yeah, Flanno played most of the 2013-14 season at LB too, didn't he?

Agreed. But Moreno brought it on himself. Naismith was aware that Moreno's first tackle was a 50/50 penalty. So when Moreno came up behind him, Naismith rightly judged that if he fell over, that would secure the penalty.

The double-penalty was inexcusable, he totally lost his head there. But that incident aside, he has not been bad at LB under Klopp, certainly stronger defensively compared to his first season (which, to be fair, wasn't too hard to improve on) and consistently one of the more energetic and aggressive players on our team. He is someone who clearly cares and always gives maximum effort and for that reason I find it hard to dislike him.

I will say this though - he is not even half-way to fulfilling his attacking potential. With his speed, passing accuracy and powerful shot he should be contributing a lot more in attack than the 3 assists in all competitions he has to show for this season. It's telling that Smith already has already racked up as many G+A points in far less games than Moreno. In Klopp's Dortmund team, both full-backs were big attacking weapons, in particular Pizchek (sp.?) was like an extra attacking midfielder who joined every counter-attack and added a few goals and a lot of assists every season. I think Klopp must hope that he can develop Moreno into that kind of player (Clyne seems like a more defensively-minded one by nature, which is fine), he has all the tools and its mostly about decision-making now.

His attacking potential isn't worth it though.
He's a liability at left back and will cost us more goals than he can create.
Left backs that can do both effectively are rare these days so it's a dilemma somewhat.
Hopefully Gomez can recover and be as good as he showed early in the season.

You're nuts.
Tbh.. the first tackle looked a 50/50 penalty call, but the second Moreno played right into Naismith's trickery. Btw there was a second diving effort by the same player later in the game. He's a diver in my book...

Diver or not, it was pure insanity and a dead cert penalty.

Naismith can rot but Moreno needs a slapping for that.

Well, it goes without saying that he should not be a liability at LB to play regularly in this position. I don't think teaching someone to defend is all that hard is a player is willing to learn. He's just had a bad game and knives are coming out, but overall he has shown clear improvement defensively this season. Him and Clyne also played a lot of games in a row without rest.

And guess what – other teams' FBs are fucking up now and again too, Marcelo is still starting regularly for Real Madrid and even David Alaba made a bad error the other day too. I'm not even going to mention Azpilicueta and Ivanovic's performances this season. You have to compare our players to other flash-and-blood humans, not to some perfect ideal of a defender.

He's one of the players that has improved the most under Klopp. Still only 23 years old and you'd think Klopp sees there is enough potential and ability there to work with. One bad game doesnt change that.
Nor does one, no two, incredibly daft tackles either.
His speed has certainly saved us a fair few times this season.

Its great to have both Flanno and Smith challenging him for the starting spot in the coming years.
Clyne has been great so far and I dont think there is any pressing need to get a new left back.
Its more urgent to solve the GK, CBs and midfield.
Klopp likes to develop young players and Moreno will certainly get some time from him.

He's also has a big presence off the field and in the dressing room. Our squad need players like that.

Why can't either of Gomez or Flannagan be left footed is what springs to my mind everytime I see that fucking imbecile be at fault for another goal from left back.

Heggem was with us for 5 years and only has 2 appearances more than Moreno.

If Alberto does his hamstring in the next couple of weeks I blame you entirely.

Yeah Heggem was permo-injured. So frustrating, because he always looked like a really exciting player.

As a defender, Riise was never that good. I would say that José Enrique is a much more solid defender than Riise ever was.

Maybe but Riise was the left back in our best defence of the Premiership era

Unfortunately, in recent years our best left back for crossing was mediocre at other aspects of his game - and that, IMHO, was Insua. He could get to the line and then hit a variety of really good crosses. Brad Smith reminds me a bit of him in terms of that skill. But Smith is pretty promising as a defender, too - nothing dramatic, but he's tough, keeps it simple and has always seemed able to learn. So I'd like to see him get a run in the side.

When was the last time we had a solid, reliable left back we were fine with? Riise? Aurelio when he wasn't injured?

Riise was a quality left back for a good few seasons, apart from the last one. Flanno also played well there before his injury, despite not being left-footed. Enrique was excellent for half a season.

I never liked Aurelio much; too brittle, no pace and couldn't tackle or head. Insua was horrible. Dossna couldn't defend. We've had a few issues at LB, yeah. Although I do like Moreno.
