Meireles handing in a transfer request and #LFC getting £10m+ is exactly what the club have been angling for since July.

He's nowhere near as good as any of chelsea's midfielders. But the fact he is portugal's captain might influence villa boas into picking him anyway. In fact thats a fucking certainty to happen because managers always act like cunts when it comes to team selection.

I think we have fucked chelsea for a second time, and comolli is probably a genius
Isn't Ronaldo Portugal's captain?
Oh, yes he is.

We'll be okay without Meireles providing Gerrard comes back and can keep himself fit. Until then I find the whole situation baffling and risky.

Dismissing him as just a squaddie, shithouse is just lazy and comforting. He was far more than that.

We should have held off until January, IMO.

for me the situation is like selling skrtel.
you have an ever present carra (lucas)
you have a quality but injury prone partner agger (gerrard)
you have a new player adam (coatez)
these three stay fit then you don't have a problem and skrtel isn't going to get a sniff, so if you sell him it isn't a problem, right?
the problem is if the quality but injury player breaks down and the new player or ever present breaks down then you are suddenly very thin on the ground, suddenly it's a problem if you don't have experience to step in.

But if you sold Skrtel to a rival you just made them worse.

Meireles leaving isn´t the end of the world but I do hope that we aren´t in a position in January where we are looking for a new cm. Shelvey needs to step up when our cms are getting tired/injured.

Has the fucker said why he wanted to leave?

But its not thin on the ground. Jonjo and henderson can play there. Now we've got bellamy he can go on the right if we're struggling in the middle. TBH i expect a 4-4-2 so it's not goign to be a massive issue.

We've lost a talented player, but it won't leave s thin on the ground

It will be a combination of their manager, a lot higher wages and the opportunity of playing CL football.

Great post. Without being an arse, thats discussion over everyone, right there ^^^^^. Good player, put in transfer request, doesnt leave us short on options if we get a couple of injuries. Good fee for an unhappy squad member.

and a mighty shove towards the door. rory smith says he interviewed him in march and had never seen a player happier at a club.

i'm not going to criticise him because i don't think he did anything wrong. i just hope henderson keeps on improving as quickly as possible, because right now meireles is the better player.

Rory. If you're gonna use the first tweet you should use the following one about his attitude in July being incredibly unhappy. I believe he said 'his head had been turned'.

Alonso, Mascherano and now fucking Meireles..

Why does this fucking club fuck with the players i love to watch..

Meireles has been fucked about.. Its obvious that he didnt get that wage increase he was promised.. The wage bill needed to be cut and he was the obvious target due to his age, high wages and ability to still demand a decent transfer fee.. I really hope this is the last broken promise that causes unrest within the squad..

It's funny really... because his amazing ability to run in space is also the reason he isnt seen as an automatic first 11 player.. We demand more creativity one minute - the next we want steady eddies that hold their position..

I love Meireles - however, i see how he is difficult to fit into our team.. i also see how he can occasionally be viewed as somewhat of a luxury.. The signing was odd to begin with considering his inclusion in the team would always throw out any balance we had.. but his running, skill and composure will be SIGNIFICANTLY MISSED.

This is a very interesting discussion and one I think we'll see repeated at least once a year when we offload a popular player.

I loved Ming's movement and understanding with our forward line, he's a technically skilled player who is often a joy to watch in action.

But I'm not very sad to see him go.

Several reasons:

1. I think it's great the way we have a front four or six that seem to be confident in swapping positions and moving around to make and receive passes. Meireles was excellent at this BUT, I also like to think that each player should have a role or position at which he excels and I never got that with Ming. He was too soft to play in the middle of midfield and lacked something when on the wing. I couldn't see him starting may games for us this year.

2. He will turn 29 this season and I don't think his value will ever get any higher. Like it or not, this is the way the club will be run from now on - we WILL sell most players before their value decreases and this will mean we'll see players moving to rival clubs almost every year and before they start to decline. Get used to it. I think most foreign players will likely stay at Liverpool for only a few seasons from now on and will leave at age 26/27/28.

3. Where is he going to play at Chelsea? I'm confused as to how he fits into their team and would strengthen it. Does he get a central role or on the flank? I can't see him replacing Lampard yet and it's highly unlikely he'll weigh in with Lampard's 15+ goals per season even if he does. I'm really not sure he strengthens the Chelsea squad as much as people seem to think.

I'm afraid that I'm with those who think the club has wanted this and that like with the Torres deal there's a bit of theatre going on here to make it look like the club was an innocent victim in the whole thing.

Chelsea must be concerned about Lampards fitness. He only played 24 matches last year and he is now 33.

Meireles is a stop-gap replacement/cover for Frank.

I think he'll do alright there. He always looked best for us when he was pushed further forward. That's when his goal streak occurred, and I think he'll get a similar set up from Chelsea.

give something going forwards with the ball and contribute going the other way without the ball, miereles didn't, that's not sour grapes that a fact.

And what exactly does Lucas add going forward?
I can see where you are coming from like but to suggest we have it covered on the strength of 3 games one of which we drew at home to fucking sunderland is a bit fucking thin.
Adam wont get any better, what we now have (a good passer who takes a good ser piece) is what we get.
Henderson may turn out to be Gerrard II bit after three games.......come on.

That's not the whole story though mate, if he's sulking & being a cunt in the dressing room it effects team spirit too.

In which case you either leave him in the reserves, or get your money back.
If he's sulking etc then address the situation - don't shovel it out the door and trip over it next time we take the pitch.

He was pissed off and with good reason; pay him what he's obviously worth and see if treating him with respect might help him show respect in return. Too many people looking at a symptom here and declaring we solved the problem. We didn't - we got rid of a symptom and the result is we damaged the club and aided a rival.

Now we've got two problems.

good post, but I think point 3 is where you are weak on. there is no doubt that he is a good player (certainly not as great as some make out), and by us losing a good player and chleasea gaining one, we have strengthened them and undermined ourselves.

point 2 is more apt for a club like wigan, who are primarily concerned about selling on players and making a profit, we on the other hand should be more concerned about keeping a good squad.

point 1 is undermined, in light of his cameo against the gunners, and his all round play last year. his value is not being a hard-nut, but his footballing brain and technique, which opens spaces and creates chances - which we have now lost.
