This is a very interesting discussion and one I think we'll see repeated at least once a year when we offload a popular player.
I loved Ming's movement and understanding with our forward line, he's a technically skilled player who is often a joy to watch in action.
But I'm not very sad to see him go.
Several reasons:
1. I think it's great the way we have a front four or six that seem to be confident in swapping positions and moving around to make and receive passes. Meireles was excellent at this BUT, I also like to think that each player should have a role or position at which he excels and I never got that with Ming. He was too soft to play in the middle of midfield and lacked something when on the wing. I couldn't see him starting may games for us this year.
2. He will turn 29 this season and I don't think his value will ever get any higher. Like it or not, this is the way the club will be run from now on - we WILL sell most players before their value decreases and this will mean we'll see players moving to rival clubs almost every year and before they start to decline. Get used to it. I think most foreign players will likely stay at Liverpool for only a few seasons from now on and will leave at age 26/27/28.
3. Where is he going to play at Chelsea? I'm confused as to how he fits into their team and would strengthen it. Does he get a central role or on the flank? I can't see him replacing Lampard yet and it's highly unlikely he'll weigh in with Lampard's 15+ goals per season even if he does. I'm really not sure he strengthens the Chelsea squad as much as people seem to think.
I'm afraid that I'm with those who think the club has wanted this and that like with the Torres deal there's a bit of theatre going on here to make it look like the club was an innocent victim in the whole thing.

good post, but I think point 3 is where you are weak on. there is no doubt that he is a good player (certainly not as great as some make out), and by us losing a good player and chleasea gaining one, we have strengthened them and undermined ourselves.
point 2 is more apt for a club like wigan, who are primarily concerned about selling on players and making a profit, we on the other hand should be more concerned about keeping a good squad.
point 1 is undermined, in light of his cameo against the gunners, and his all round play last year. his value is not being a hard-nut, but his footballing brain and technique, which opens spaces and creates chances - which we have now lost.
