With time to develop Shelvey and Sterling (and maybe even Raheem) will get better and give us depth next year.

And we can always buy more.

By selling him the assumption must be that Adam and Henderson are better players. I sometimes wonder if I'm watching a different sport.
Why would you assume that?

Could it not be that the player was offered better wages by a club offering CL football as well?
He certainly was, as was Modric, but that is not counter to my point. I assume that Adam and Henderson are rated higher because they started ahead of him, and we settled for a poxy 12m.

The fact Kenny didn't fancy him isn't the point. By all means bomb him off but have a replacement lined up. People are being accused of bigging up Meireles. Well the same is true of Shelvey and Henderson. Shelvey isn't good enough/ready and Henderson hasn't played enough to demonstrate he can be the lynchpin in central midfield. If Gerrard was back playing I wouldn't have a problem with Raul going but he's not and I think we're taking too much of a gamble.
Agreed.
Also few things that annoys me about this:
-Merieles is not old, he's 28
-Selling to Chavs, they would never sell to rival yet we seemed to be happy to sell to them which is fine if it's 50 million but for a 12 million?
-Seems like every season a player seems to be unhappy for whatever reason, why is this?
Sure we can be good old british lad who will be loyal forever more but we can't build a good team around all brits.
Are we doing enough off the field to help these players? Pandering to their needs ?
UTD, City and Chelsea all seem to have players who want to stick around, so what about us?
Champs League?
That would make sense, but then he did join us know we weren't in it.
Is it as simple as that? If so then I can accept that knowing he wanted to play in it having played virtually every season at Porto, but if not then we better get used to our players leaving when they want.

That's not the whole story though mate, if he's sulking & being a cunt in the dressing room it effects team spirit too.

In which case you either leave him in the reserves, or get your money back.
Who said he's been unsettling the dressing room?
I think that was a presumption based on the fact he had handed in a written transfer request and that being the case he didn't want to be here

regards
Exactly.

Look, I'm not denying he's a good player, he is. However, once a player tells us he wants to leave & is prepared to hand in a transfer request, fuck him.

Yes, we may miss his creativity, but Henderson is getting better & better in that position, so I've no doubt he can do as much of a job, if not more.
Jon you keep saying that buddy but we cant let it become the norm for our players to know their contracts are worth fuck all as all they have to do is ask for a transfer and we let them go.
Its such a short view. We have to make players understand that a contract is a contract. We cant go on losing players of the calibre of Torres, Raul, Mascherano, Alonso, Arbeloa etc we have to be able to say tough shit, stay here and EARN Champions league football. Otherwise what are we but a feeder club to the top 4.

We had a surplus in midfield, he was sellable. Simple as that. And over the course of the next five years were better off with Adam and Henderson anyway. Meireles is having the best spell of his career but it wont last forever.

Maybe he joined under one manager and signed up to his ideas, but got a bit disheartened when a new manager took over? Often happens.

Right, just had a couple of texts, & been told by two reliable people that Ming handed his transfer request in on Tuesday.

The reason the request was made public so late was that we'd been trying to negotiate a player swap (Sturridge) with Chelsea from Tuesday on. We failed basically, they held the cards as they knew we wouldn't keep a player who didn't want to be here, so we settled for as much cash as we felt we could get.

Chelsea originally bid for Ming at the start of August, the fact he waited until so late was to do exactly that, he fucked us over, big time, had he handed his request in earlier we may have got more cash or the player we wanted, as it is we got shafted.

I'm also told he was offered an improved contract at the start of August, before Chelsea put a bid in.

Rory smith said he interviewed him in March and had never spoken to anyone happier at a football club.

Tony Evans or someone interviewed him in July and have said he seemed unsettled and i remember reading their article stating he'd be offski.

Also, there seems to be a few too many journo's under the impression that Kenny just didn't get on with him.

Luka Modric is infinitely more important to Spurs than Ming was to us though Onky.

This kinda thinking is why Arsenal, as good as they've been, last won a trophy in 2004. We should keep our in form players, and certainly should never sell them to the rivals unless they offer stupid dough

Fair enough. I guess that it's just that Adam and Henderson were picked by KD and Meireles wasn't. He obviously sees them as a better fit for his plans.

I think people may be missing the point that it seems obvious he had his head turned by another Portugese offering more money and CL football which prompted his transfer request.

I don't think either Kenny or Damien would have left it so late to do this business given the evidence during the rest of the transfer window.
Which is the point. We clearly did not intend selling him despite what the rumours may have been, evidenced by we forcing him to put in a transfer request.
Miereles has obviously been tapped up by Torres and the Chelsea Manager, who he knows. Yes, and yes, he might not have been happy warming the bench for the first few games, but Kenny has always said we will not keep any player who does not want to be here and believe in the club 100%.
As I said I liked him, I did not want him to go, he was looking more like a good squad player in the new way of things, but I can live with it we have plenty of options.
regards

But that's not the point. I bet you he goes and forms a great understanding with Torres. It's utterly mental that we'd sell him to them. If he was surplus then he should have left the country. If he was really kicking up a massive stink, so what? He had ages on his contract, his wages weren't high, he could have rotted in the reserves until January and we could have got more for him from someone else.

Thanks Jon.

His head was swayed, tapped up by the twats quite obviously.

Oh well, I hope some people will now take back their attacks on our accountants, or Kenny, etc for selling a good player. He wanted to go, essentially pulled a Torres with the late transfer request. Fuck him.

Which Modric also produced? The difference being that no one will ever offer 40m for Modric again, where Ming was let go for peanuts.

If he had to go, why to them?

Well look, we could go round in circles forever here. Im no going to post on it again because whats done is done. But the fact is on the LAST day of the transfer window we strengthened Chelsea and weakened ourselves and that (regardless of the arguments) is fucking mental.
I dont know the ins and outs, no one does, but we sold one of our best players and didnt replace him. It seems the easiest way of dealing with that is to deny he was any good or claim that Jordan Henderson is a better player after one decent game for us.
Whatever floats your boat. I cant believe we allowed it to happen. I just cant. Its shite.
But its done and the season spans out ahead of us.
So long Raul. Yer cunt.

One day ONE DAY. We'll have a transfer window where we DONT sell one of our best players to a league or Champions league rival.

I kind of agree with you Krump in your last two posts, i'm just not that bothered by him leaving

Ah....the voice of reason. Your first paragraph is spot on and sums its all up Oncy.

It was no surprise to see him leave. There was nothing wrong with the fanny against Exeter yet he couldn't get off the pitch quick enough.

Chelsea visit us on the last day of the season. If they finish higher than us it's going to be great watching those pair dance round the place isn't it? It's not just about keeping him, it's about improving them.

Because he was obviously tapped up by them, as soon as Villa Boas was made Chelsea manager I knew it could be a possibility.
I hate dealing with Chelsea too, I hate them more than I hate United, but Kenny can't go back on his outspoken principle that we won't keep a player who does not want to be here.
I honestly don't think he will get that much time on the pitch with them.
If Jon is right with his texts, the way Miereles has timed things he gave us few options, and has been contemplating his moves for a while.

I'm sure there were posts like this when we sold El Cunto and replaced him with a 'Oh shit, another Mateja Kezman' like Eredivision stud.

Yes, we sold a good player to a rival. We 'strengthened' them. We 'got weaker'.

I trust Kenny's judgement here.

I also can't believe you're ignoring what Jon wrote in his last post - he wanted to leave. So Modric stayed - big whoop, Berbatov didn't. Carrick didn't etc. They couldn't sell their best player. It happens, they held firm and will sell him in Jan or next summer probably instead.

I'd rather people who don't want to be here move on. We did it with Torres. We did it with Mascherano. We did it with Alonso. Yes, great players. But we're Liverpool, and some guy once said that Liverpool is bigger than any player.

Oh, and Ming is a good player and better than Hendo. Hope you can pull out a reason for me! 🙂
