Pre Match Pre Match - PSV (A) - Wed 20:00

I kinda agree, I the fact Real are in the playoffs means UEFA will be squirming.

If they really wanted jeopardy and expansion. The easy option would have been to add an extra team to each group. That way you still get the home and away game. You still get 8 group games.

1st place teams - automatically through to last 16

2nd place and 3rd place teams - playoff

4th and 5th place teams out.

But UEFA thought their darlings Real would never be in such peril.

I like the new format, primarily because you don't get Madrid playing Young Boys twice. You get a variety and shows a varied strength of opposition.

Perhaps Madrid are only as low down as they are because of the new setup, rather than saved by it. In the old format, even with an extra side in each group, they wouldn't have faced us, Milan, and Atalanta. Add in the fact they lost to Lille.

Its clearly been done for money spinning, but equally it makes every game more important. If you're 1 point off qualification, you don't just need to worry about 1 other team getting a result. There's so many permutations and variety.

It's fun

I will miss the idea of "group of death", but that can be saved for world cups

On the McConnell thing - the point I like (which remains to be seen) is that it might mean Slot is more open to using him as a late sub for Gravy or Macca. He lack of rotation or subs for these two was a real challenge at the start of the season. In games we are comfortable in he might trust McConnell to do the final 10/15 and those minutes add up in recovery terms.

On Chiesa - wouldn't it be brilliant if he actually does hit match fitness and plays more in the PL. A HUGE turnaround would be him starting even just one game. We haven't really needed him to this point - although I still think we should have brought him on in that Forest away game. I think he adds something a number of our other attackers don't have, and can be an asset to the forward line.

Regarding Chiesa, one thing to factor in is that yesterday he was mostly surrounded by kids and still played well.
I'm carefully optimistic that he'll be able to contribute in the second half of the season. Especially now that Jota is out and we're playing with three wingers up front. He might even be promoted to first sub.
Just hope Slot gives him more than 5 mins. The next time he'll play 90 mins will probably be against Plymouth.

I don't really buy 'Diaz up top' but it could end up with Chiesa becoming the back up LW (first sub as you say) and Jota & Diaz used across the #9 role.

We're lucky (well - you make your own luck) that we haven't needed him up to this point, but it would be very useful if he starts contributing when we do. Even being able to do 90 mins in these rotation games is useful, as it ensures we can rest starting attackers.

Peter Bosz, the PSV manager talking about this:

“I thought it was terrible. That really annoys me to no end. That’s out of place, they shouldn’t do that. It was kind of a rondo they were playing there, with a back-heel and a non-look pass. If I had been in there […as a Liverpool player] I would have sawed them off below the knees. You just shouldn’t do that. I think it’s disrespectful to the opponent. I haven’t called them out on it yet, but that will come. I do like entertaining the public, but in a different way. I think we would have entertained the crowd even before that without all that craziness.”
----------------

Respect to Bosz, this kind of stuff could come back to bite them in the ass. They played against our reserves with a man more on the pitch.
Let's say that PSV somehow make it through and play us again, you think our best team will take this lightly?

Think Slot was very disappointed with Quansah, Harvey and Bradley. Think he expected them to show more maturity because of their experience.

McConnell outshone them all, then Morton comes on and looks better than Harvey.

You're right, we're bringing in some serious cash this summer.

This isn't anything to do with judging them on a game by game basis - one game Harvey looks better, the next it's McConnell or whoever....it's beside the point, it's much more simpler than that. We need to build a reliable squad for Arne that he can actually work with so that he's comfortable picking anyone at any given time. The funds for that aren't going to come out of John's bank account so it's on the club to make that happen.

I didn't expect us to win last night after seeing the squad - but I'm fine with that and I'm sure none of the first team give a monkeys.

Major major plus was Chiesa not only looking full of energy for the full 90 mins but looking dangerous, tricky and clearly MotM. I can't wait to see him in action in the PL especially given he can play anywhere across the front at LW, RW or CF. I think he's going to be great.

I'm not judging them game by game. Quansah has regressed this season after looking very promising last season. He had a chance yesterday to show that he also could lead the backline instead of being babysat by one of the seniors.
Harvey has been in and out of the team the whole season, it's clear to me that Slot doesn't really rate him. He's currently our third choice attacking mid.
I'm still a fan of Bradley, but he's not close to being our first choice right back. Wasn't getting much help from Quansah yesterday either.
If Trent leaves in the summer, we will most likely try to sign a new RB.

I think all these fake notions of "respect" are out of place and stupid.

We need more fun and showboating in football, not less of it.

I thought he looked brilliant and sharper and sharper the more the game wore on. He's looked laboured so far but has still shown what class he has got with what little match fitness he has, yesterday showed what he can be like when he's built up his fitness more and more, he was excellent. I thought he did equally well on the left too, which bodes well. He's a cracking option, if he can stay fit then we might have got ourselves a steal, but we've been here before with players who have similar injury records.

Quite disappointing performance in general, the team has struggles against PSV attacking football side and with an excellent finishing, whereas our defence couldn't be coping with PSV lighting attacks! Our forward players ought to learn from PSV. Our bright moment for the game was Chiesa! I just hope he reaches his full fitness! He will be a positive boost for the squad.

Were you watching another game? I've just watched it back again and considering it was a mix of squad and youngsters they played very well.

Not sure what you expected!

He's the January forward signing some were baying for!

I think Quansah should go on loan, not sure what he did thats taking his mind off football but maybe going down a division could help him.
