Lucas

I had occasion to browse TIA just now and noticed that there was a just registered newbie on there defending Lucas to the hilt as well.
Are we all subject to a RAWK offensive I wonder?

He's not shite. He's been a decent player for us.

However, 300 games is more of an indictment of how far we've fallen, rather than how good he is.

This. With him playing 300 games we've finished in the top 4 three times.
The rest of the times its been 6th x 2, 7th x 2 and 8th.
Decent player but not the standard we need to be a top club.
That could be said for a lot of the players we've seen come and go during the last years.

mediocrity personified; occasionally good, frequently poor, mostly average.

And the fella who started this thread wants to lecture us on him

yes we know what a DM is, and what he does.

And we know Lucas ain't nowhere near one of the best in the game.

I always thought that was patronising. Like calling a fat kid cute or whatever.

I think that started because he was unbreakable and people wanted him out of the team and it was only going happen with an injury. Then he hit a hot streak of form and for a few months he was wonderman the great player who overcame all the odds.

Then he got broke and that was the end of wonderman.

I don't understand the near hatred from some towards Lucas. He's been a steady player for us for years now and briefly (18 months) looks like he would progress into a very good player but the cruciate injury definitely lost him some maneuverability and a bit of pace. I think that affected him as he was never pacey to begin with but even now he does that defensive midfield job better than anyone we currently have. He reads the game well for me.
That's not to say we can't do better than him in that position but we've seen no sign that Rodgers wants a holding player even though at times the team has been crying out for one.
If he does go then i'd want a replacement in and William Carvalho seems like a good fit to me. Looked very good in the U21 championships and is still only 23.

Just seen that Carvalho has a stress fracture of the tibia and is not due back for 2 and half months or so which is a pity as it probably rules him out. Good player though.

Pretty much. There was a period (not a long one, tbf) when he'd adapted to the DM role and looked good. Even on here most people thought he had become a useful player.

Then he got injured and that was the end of that. I just don't understand the drive to pretend that never happened and revel in spite towards him.

He's evidently a good guy and has done a pretty decent job. However, besides that run of games before the Chelsea injury, he's never hit the heights one would want of a Liverpool player.

No doubt he's finally got pissed off with being overlooked and good luck to him.

The Reds are prepared to listen to offers of around £8m for the 28-year-old, whose first-team chances at Anfield will be severely limited if he stays, sources have told ESPN FC.

Lucas did not travel with the squad to Stoke for Liverpool's 1-0 win in the opening match of the Premier League season on Sunday.
The Brazil international has effectively been demoted to fifth choice in the battle for central-midfield places in a summer reshuffle of the squad that followed last season's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Captain Jordan Henderson and new signing James Milner started at Stoke, with Emre Can appearing as a second-half substitute.
Joe Allen is also considered to be ahead of Lucas in the contest for selection, but is set to be out until early September with a hamstring injury.
Lucas joined Liverpool from Brazilian club Gremio for £5m in 2007, becoming a popular figure with the Anfield fanbase after a difficult start to his career on Merseyside.
He does have the option to stay, as his contract runs until 2017, but is aware he will have to leave in order to play regular football.
Inter Milan have been linked with a move for the midfielder, having tried to sign him in January.

He was at the peak of his form 2 years ago, when he was by a distance the best defensive midfielder in the competition. Rodgers decided to play him in a league cup game, for whatever fucking reason, and he tore his ACL, which is more or less the worst injury you can get and out him out for a year.

Since then he's had 4 thigh injuries, and an MCL.

It's pretty much ruined him.

People clamouring over which queue of European clubs will be lining up to take him; well it'd probably be the same list of European heavyweights who lined up to take Van Persie this summer, another player who's career is almost defunct because of prolonged injuries.

It happens.

He deserves better, I've never been a massive fan, but when he was in top form he was great for us and you can't fault his attitude, professionalism and love for the club. It's a two way street, people question the attitude of Lovren, for example, or players turning their backs on us, then you have this lad who's worked hard to make a career with us and he's more or less laughed out the club.

Yeah. Henderson isn't ideally suited to that position at all and we do need another. But we didn't concede. Whereas we did concede 6 with Lucas there a few months ago.
