Lucas

Sample sizes might explain it

You can then start looking at why he only started certain games in that 2013/14 season and maybe he only got picked for tougher matches or when he was deputising out of position for Hendo at the end of the season when you'd expect games to be a bit more nervy (with the title on the line)

Shame to see the end of his career with us pan out like this.
I love Lucas, I think hes a really good footballer. Most of the fans at this club if we had Makalele would moan he doesnt score or create or 'Do anything'.

Thats beside the point though, 300 games, 9 years, every bead of sweat. Not just that but he does fuckloads in the community with kids, at schools, hospitals etc, he really gets the club and is one of the least detached stars we have had in recent years. I dont really care if hes hated by most or not, I like him and think that in the main part we look better with Lucas in the team.

Good luck Wonderman. Ive LOVED your work.

But you know that even the defensive midfielder must score a few goals and assists. It isn't his job to do it. It is to protect the defenders. Makalele was shit in the attacking half but excellent doing his job, protect the defenders, just like Lucas. No one can blame Lucas not delivering with Rodgers as managers because when he plays then his job won't only be to protect the defenders it will also be to act as a playmaker like Gerrard. That isn't Lucas strenght, it is his weakness. Lucas is at least as good as Matic but one of them play in a system that suits him, the other don't. Matic don't need to act as a playmaker, he will only do what he is excellent at, to defend. If Lucas only needed to do that then he would be our most important player. Lucas will never get a fair chance with Rodgers as manager because Brendan isn't playing with a defensive midfielder in any of his systems. He plays with a defensive playmaker. Big difference.

Some good points there, but if you seriously think Lucas is as good as Matic I want lots of whatever you've been smoking.

Linked to Juve in the BBC gossip column. Khediera is out injured, isn't he?

Hopefully we'll get a good price.

I'm told there hasn't been a murmur about this in the Italian media though. It's probably some BBC junior trying to fill column inches.

The BBC gossip column is just a round up of media rumours. None of it is BBC. If transfer info is quoted on the BBC site, it's normally pretty accurate.

Nah it probably isn't.
Even Modo wasn't as bat shit crazy as this lad.
Lucas as good as Matic.
Fuck me sideways.

Remember that thread a few weeks back where you got to choose one player from another club.
Most picked Matic.
Wonder how many Chelsea fans would say Lucas.

Modo's English is also a tad better than this guy's (although this guy's is a heck of a lot better than my knowledge of any Scando language).

Lucas is obviously not anywhere near Matic at this point. He is a different player on many levels. Does it even matter?

The point is that if we want to look decent off the ball on our own final 1/3 against the good teams that can apply pressure we need something solid to build around. For me it isnt Hendo/Milner. It would take time to get that to gel and we don't have time. It isn't Can. We saw him at the U21 Worldcup. Brilliant in one match and allover the place in the next. He lacks consistency at this point - naturally.

So where does that leave us without Lucas??

The article says he's an option to Draxler. So, it sounds a bit errrrmm..

AC Milan in the state their in now sounds about his level.

Ish. There's some interesting stuff there but he also takes the view that Can (who apparently will have the necessary discipline because he's German), Henderson and Milner between them can do the job. That really is a pile of @rse and I'm concerned our prospects will suffer if Rodgers shares that view.

Interestingly though, Graham Beecroft on TalkSh!te this morning was saying he wouldn't rule out the possibility of a "more defensive midfield player" coming in. I know it's nicknamed TalkSh!te for a reason, but Beecroft is generally sound and seems reasonably well connected, so I hope he's right.

As Rodgers just HAS to have a good early season, I would have expected him to give himself every possible option up until Christmas, at least, which would have meant keeping Lucas until January. It's not the time for the manager to throw away experience like that, even if the player is pissed off about things.

Im not sure...especially with Can...he really can surprise and show up as a strong defensivemidfielder who contols the play.

Maybe he feels the cash would give him a better option.

Can't see it, Your Madge. I don't think he has the discipline, besides which I reckon it would be a waste of his attacking talent. He did OK at centre-back but (a) I didn't think he looked consistently happy there and (b) he didn't have to face the same positional dilemmas he'd face at DM. It was a stopgap measure which worked reasonably well - I don't think we should be taking it as encouragement to mess with *yet* another player's true position.
