"Andy was due to start. He had a slight twinge on his hamstring. We had a scan on it and it didn't show a tear, just a slight disruption. We tried to give him 48 hours, let him travel and he trained yesterday to see how it was. It was still a bit tight and the medics' advice was it was too much of a risk for him to play. It was unfortunate because he has worked well and I know he was desperate to play. Hopefully missing the game will allow him to recover for the weekend."

We tried to give him 48 hours, let him travel and he trained yesterday ...........

We just wanted to get him closer to Newcastle, let him feel the homesickness in his stomach as he sees the road signs, to encourage him to want to move and agree a lower salary .....

ITV showed an interview with Rodgers in the build-up to the match. Rodgers said that Carroll had been on the team-sheet but had come to see him to report a slight hamstring niggle, so they had decided it would be safer to leave him out.

That was a pretty average performance overall but we got the job done. Stand out performers for me were Sterling and Adam, both put in very decent displays.

Special mention for Pepe, not much to do, but when he was called upon he produced a super save to ensure we won the game.
