I think Lambert should stay with us for another season. He was bought to be our 3rd choice striker and essentially became our first option earlier in the season, didn't play well, was dropped to the bench and hasn't had much of a sniff since.

The thing about Lambert is he can bring other players into the game. He is a smart, experienced player and a good finisher. Although he is not suited to stretching defenses and high pressure, playing with Lallana, Sterling and Coutinho behind him could yield good results in certain situations. I could also see him playing up top with a pacier striker when we are chasing a goal.

Balotelli and Borini need to be sold but Lambert is better than both those players and it seems silly to get rid of all 3 at once.

New world class striker (1), Sturridge, Lambert, Origi and then Depay or Sterling as emergency options

Good post and I largely agree (I don't think he's got more ability than Balotelli, but he does a sod of a lot more with what he *has* got). I've felt for some time that Lambert should have been given more of a go against sides from lower down the league who congest the midfield and defence, because he's good at dropping off, finding space and playing others in, as well as giving CBs a battle when he has to. Giving him another chance against those teams IMO might well have helped us get more points in those games than we've actually managed, and those points might have made a big difference.

I'd have no issue with him staying at the club and being a 4th striker ...

Origi, Studge, ______ (Sterling if he stays / Depay / whoever), Lambert

I've put Origi '1st' b/c I'm not convinced Studge will stay healthy ... 🙁

Lambert had a good game against QPR and his display caused me to wonder whether we should have made more use of him during the season. He's a big unit who also has some vision and skill, and causes problems for the opposition when he is around their penalty area.
I would certainly keep him if he wants to stay.

I don't agree that Sterling should be in your list of strikers @LeTallecWiz! He showed conclusively yesterday why he is a winger not a striker!

Yes - he missed the sitter (he's missed a few) but him being up front causes tremendous pressure on the CBs, and gives more freedom for the likes of Coutinho etc to cause damage.

In fairness to Rodgers, Lambert has had opportunities this season and played very poorly. He could have had a few games more than Mario on merit, but he can hardly complain given his level of performance so far in a red shirt.

When I see posters trying to find the positives in Rickie Lambert, I see a fan-base coming to terms with the fact we are a mid level club.

he's looking mildly more acceptable as he is being compared to Ballo and Borini - which says it all. if he remains in our squad next season it will be a travesty and a damning indictment on our ambition.

i would rather Sinclair or Yesil be warming the bench then him.

You have to use him properly. It's no good suddenly punting the ball up at him because, for one thing, that's not his game, and for another thing, we don't have other players used to supporting such a player, so the ball gets blasted at him and Sterling observes it from a distance on the wing, Coutinho doesn't know what to do, Ibe's hugging the right flank, etc etc. If you're going to play him, fit him into the team. I would like to see him stay and be a proper back up forward rather than the semi-retired pro he's been reduced to this season, but I doubt it will happen.

He's been poor when used throughout the season, one half decent game doesn't change that. A poor, and quite frankly a pointless signing. Should be moved on in the summer.

In fairness to Lambert, (a) Rodgers has badly misused him and (b) even so, he's had some decent sub appearances to go with the poor ones.

And it's got bugger all to do with "coming to terms" etc. It's a matter of making the best use of what we've got until we earn a higher place in the league.

Lambert has scored for us, I remember him scoring with a good shot earlier in the season.

A year older and without the euphoria of just having signed for us after a season of regular football, I dread to think how much worse he will be next year.

I dont think he will ever suit our style ofplay and its probably best for everybody if he moves on. The idea of a strikeforce consisting of

Sturridge - talented but hardly ever 100% fit and therefore not capable of being the focal point of the attack
Sterling - genuinely one of the worst finishers Ive seen
Origi - a young unknown quantity playing his first season in English football
Lambert - an honest pro past his best who doesnt fit the way we play

is terrifying, and not in the good way. If we were to add a new world class striker then there would be even less chance of a game for Lambert than their currently is. His biggest problems are hes not fast or mobile enough, at 33 those are not qualities he is likely to improve year on year. It was a nice Idea but it hasnt worked, time to move on

Absolutely fine with him staying with us next season as a squad player.
He puts the effort in no matter what happens, unlike some of the others, and losing so many scousers from the squad is not something I want.
We're Liverpool, so let's at least have one or two local lads that'll wear their hearts on their sleeves.

He was 30 odd when he joined us so while I appreciate the local connection I think its being somewhat overplayed here, there kids in the academy team who have been at the club half their lives, they wont necessarily make it. Sentiment is no reason to keep a player. He either performs or he doesnt and based on performance I dont think hes worth keeping.

Yet in those instances he's taking the place of someone who will score (more) goals. Sterling should never be on a list of our strikers.

Origi is going to be 3rd choice, almost certainly there will be a new striker to go with a, hopefully, fully recuperated Sturridge and if Lambert stays that would be fine by me, I've always liked his game intelligence and aerial ability, I just thought he himself had decided he was off - certainly sounded like it in January. Yesil will probably replace Lambo if he continues his progression.

This is it.

We're clearly targeting a striker and with Sturridge back to fitness that's our front line. Origi will be 3rd so why waste money on getting a fourth striker? We have other targets to get. Lambert will be fourth choice, gradually phased out with someone like Yesil.

He seems like a nice guy n all, but really - what's the fucking point in keeping him? We may as well give some lad off the kop a contract.

I'm liking your deep south American lilt. Comedy. Anyway I agree. What's the point? It could have been good. It wasn't . Move on innit (said in equally rubbish Walthamstow lilt) 😎

[article]Chelsea are considering a shock move for Rickie Lambert as a possible replacement for Didier Drogba.

The newly-crowned Champions had the 33-year-old Liverpool striker watched as he played the whole of Saturday’s 2-1 win over QPR.

The west Londoners are set to get an even closer look at Lambert next weekend as the Reds’ next game is at Stamford Bridge.

The former Southampton striker joins Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor on the Chelsea shortlist to replace 37-year-old Drogba - third choice behind Diego Costa and Loic Remy - who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Drogba has confirmed he wants to continue playing but boss Jose Mourinho has yet to confirm whether the Blues legend will stay.[/article]
