Kolo Toure deal agreed !

Really? At 32?

It's a free transfer (which automatically increases the amount paid to the player and agent due to no transfer fees) for a player that was on astronomical wages, and his age is precisely the reason why he'll command a high wage as it'll be his final big contract.

Unless there is a precedence of free high profile players joining big clubs on low wages I don't know how some people seem so confident that he'll be a cheap squad option. He won't.

As mentioned, Carra was on high wages too. It's not really something additional.

The reports are claiming he took a drop from his £90k wage at Man City. Could be around £75k? The likes of Henderson is apparently on £65k.

With the backroom staffs from Man City (even though they're scouting rather than coaching ones), you'd like to think they know a little bit about him and his personality than the rest of us do (via reports) - what his presence in training ground/around the club can offer etc.

Besides the silverwares that he has won and the experience he has had both at club and international level, he's one of the 2 remaining players in the league (Ashley Cole being the other) from that Arsenal Invincibles team.

We have also slashed the wage bill recently with the departures of Aquilani, Cole, Rodriguez and Kuyt. He wouldn't have featured on my wanted list but I don't see much harm in his signing. Like I said earlier, if he ends up playing, it should (and would) be on merit - similar to how Carra got back into the starting XI.

I dont really give a shit what you think or do or feel.
But thanks for sharing.
Ah ya do. Now, the deal is done I believe. I really think Carra could have done another season and he was just ticked off at falling down the pecking order, didn't want to deal with it.

Unless City are agreeing to supplement his salary - a good move for both teams and as far as we are concerned he could be paying out far less than thought.

Even though Rodgers has said he'd like to keep him

Even after skrtel said he wants to fight for his place

Why must he go? We need more than 2 good cbs, kids and an old fella.

Skrtel also said he'll consider any offer that comes in. Rodgers comments could be read as getting the highest fee possible.
I think he's off. Time will tell though mate.

Anyhoo, think I need a wee summerbreak from this place

Not excited by this signing, but if Skrtel and Carra are off then signing some experienced cover on a free makes sense, providing funds are made available for a young and accomplished CB.

It's not a shit hole, it's hubris.
It's just that some posters feel like they can dictate what everyone is supposed to think and if you disagree you're automatically a cunt.

Also, some of the mods are enablers.

There I said it.

Modo in irony shocker.

Yes youre talking about the need for an experienced CB. Ignoring the fact we have one. And excluding the OTHER ONE we still have.
Daft twat.

But they're not really showing their experience are they? Agger isn't vocal enough and has, until recently, been largely hit and miss himself - he came to the fore with the experienced Carragher put alongside him, before that he was all over the place as much as anyone. Skrtel made way for Carragher for exactly the same reasons, so this point about us already having "experience" in those positions is moot, they've both won fuck all and have proven themselves to only really come to prominence with more experience alongside them. International status is neither here nor there when they haven't brought such authority to their roles with us - it's a daft point because it's just theory based bollocks, especially when you know that Skrtel is clearly gone.

I'm not overly sold on Toure because he's clearly declined in recent years, but he's spent the last 10 years at Arsenal and then City, playing Champions League Football consistently and helping keep both teams in the running, he can't be "that" bad.

So he was at his best when he was partnered by a beasty strong fucker

I'm even more elated.

I might just ejaculate from sheer joy.

People are making assumptions about the role and status, no one knows if he'll be first choice or which breed of defender we want him to be. If anything, this Papa dude looks like the typical "stopper" style centre half. If we've still got concerns over Agger's ability to last a season, then perhaps it makes some sense for Toure to act as cover.

Like I said, I'm not overawed, but he's on a free and ticks all the right boxes in terms of experience and honours, some of the hysterics on here is typically predictable. And it's pointless listening to anything Ross says about a player over the age of 26.

If we get papa. And then we have 1 strong stopper. The rest squander possession or get ribboned by kids.

Even as 4th choice I don't want him here.

Put it this way, if agger and papa (if we even end up getting him) got injured; would you be happy with Kolo and Kelly as cbs? Or Kolo and wisdom?

I still don't know why people think a 32 year old sitting on the bench at one club on a lot more money, would be happy to move half an hour away for less money but equal bench time.

Mark.
You are positive about EVERY signing we ever make.
I like that about you, youre a joy to know.
Doesnt make you any less wrong on occassion.
This is one of those. Hes a fucking fat useless tub of money grabbing over the hill drug taking wank.
All the spin in the world wont change that.
Its a rubbish waste of money.
Please dont tell me im overreacting.

I have always hated him. A dreadful footballer in my opinion and also a massive twat. I hope he proves me wrong. I also hope we buy a top CB so he is only ever used as cover.

But that's theoretical. Agger and Carragher/Skrtel could have got injured this season and we'd have been left with a half asleep calamitous Uruguayan, and who? You're always going to be in danger of leaving yourselves short if your two best players in an area of the side get injured, regardless of strength in depth. If Suarez and Sturridge get injured, what have we got? The point is we'll always have at least one of them barring the worst of injury crisis's, and such occasions are what give you the opportunity to find out whether players on the fringe of things can cut it.

I've said enough times throughout this thread, from what I've seen of him in recent years, he's declined significantly, I'm not "happy" by any stretch, but your point about us already having experience there has proven to be untrue, they clearly struggle to show it.

But if we're losing skrtel and Coates this summer, we need 2 players to replace them. I don't think we will, or should, as we don't want to stop the kids progress.

We needed a better cb to replace carra. Someone who could at least drop in and do a good job. Not someone who's wright fluctuates and has been a beach player for years.

Its not 'proven to be untrue' AT ALL.
The point being made was re-Age and Experience not IF they were up to the job.
They are both almost 30 with hundreds of games for us under their belt over a decade combined and hundreds of international caps.
Proven to be untrue my fucking *kolo* arse

They have experience but you're talking about experience being a decisive factor with them that could and should be relied upon. Skrtel lost his place to Carragher last season and Agger started performing when Carra came into the side. Before that they were both all over the place, so this assumption that their age defines their ability be relied upon in that respect, is proven suspect, and only recently too.

Of course, there has to come a point where they should step up and show it, and now is perhaps the time, but given neither of them have comfortably been able to cement their place and stamp their authority on their roles in the side over the last several years, I don't think it's massively unfair to be a bit cynical about it.
