Is he injured? Suso away at Stokes was a poor bet. Although Shelvey was the worst in midfield closely followed by Lucas.

Best I've seen him play in his short cameo tonight, it's great that Rodgers has recognised a lack of covering ground in the midfield, so he's given Henderson a shot in a supporting role, but he's inevitably tracked back and worked hard too. He seemed to give Allen the same job tonight and it worked. So perhaps Gerrard 'sitting' isn't all that bad after all, he played some brilliant passes in the last two matches in that role.

I know the argument, because I've constantly been the one arguing it, that he should be further up, but he's older and proving ineffective in congested areas, being able to look up and assess the play has certainly helped in the last two games.

He came on against a tired, dispirited and defeated Sunderland team and played ok, but I thought our play slowed down a bit after he came on and we seemed to lose a bit of the dynamism and shape that we'd had earlier in the game. He should have scored from one chance but didn't hit the target and was unlucky with the offside goal after a fine finish. I thought Henderson had played better and at a point in the game when Sunderland were still in it. I hope Allen can step it up though and play further forward because I think he's too ickle to play in a holding position.

Let's see what happens over the next 5 games. We've got a tough run of fixtures, which will tell us more about whether this team is on the up.

Some of Gerrards passes today was out of this world.
Hate to repeat myself, but Stevie is coming into some form and has played every minute so far in the league.

Ok? That cameo was ok? He was very good. Lets give our new players the credit they deserve when they deserve it. And Allen does tonight.

Agree with that, Hansern. In 30 minutes he could have had 3 goals and a quite beautifully played assist. Sunderland were beaten, but Allen did more than anybody bar Luis to open up their defence.

Didn't Gerrard have two assists (and was heavily involved in Sterlings goal)?

LOL. Allen came on and was given the "go on lad, show 'em what you can do" role behind the striker because Rodgers, understandably, wants to increase his confidence, win over doubters, and make his midfield acquisitions look like they made sense and improved us. When he came on Sunderland were rocking, they were totally on the ropes and we looked like we could score a few more, but we didn't and it seemed to take longer for us get into dangerous positions and the running from that position stopped creating the same kind of space for Suarez that he'd enjoyed up to that point. The bare facts are that we scored 3 when Allen was sitting on the bench and none when he came on. I'm not having a go at the man but saying he was great is simply bollocks. Gerrard, Suarez, Sterling, Henderson, Downing, Johnson, Skrtel and a few others all had better games.

Top class? That's more than stretching it. As Gene said, it was nice to see him given the encouragement tonight to go on without the shackles and against tired legs to try and grab a goal and a must needed confidence boost. Fair play to Rodgers for managing players well like that, taking them out of the firing line and then trying to pick and choose carefully when to introduce them again. But let's not get carried away, like Hendo, he's young, lacking in any real outstanding quality as a footballer but with a bit of indulgence and perseverance he may well develop into a cracking team player and squad member that will learn the basics of our game and become the kind of United-esque lad who will fit into the side and do a no-nonsense job keeping things simple and ticking over. Let's not pretend he's some prodigious talent shackled by being played slightly deeper than he's used to, because he isn't. He's very much in the mould of Hendo and Lucas, tidy player who'll contribute and has a decent enough chance of developing into a good performer.

That's about it on current evidence.

Stevie was good tonight, but that's a very generous summation. I agree Allen came on at a good time, but he did very well, using the ball effectively. The critical "Joe Sideways" tag hardly applied tonight. He was purposeful and incisive.

He can still perform either role as well as anyone in the world. The problem is he can no longer run back and forth between the two positions because he's old and suffered some pretty bad injuries and infections.

Yet for most of the season I'm looking at him run and run and run and fucking run. Meanwhile deluded fuckers like Allen and Shelvey are strolling around thinking they can boss the game with their passing. He's the captain and he should have told the pair of them to fuck off by the end of our first league game. Instead he's just run and run, and we've lost game after game.

Gerrard may not have been at his best this season, but he's not the fucking reason we've "lost game after game".

I know. We've lost game after game because Gerrard has been pre-occupied with pressing and doing donkey work instead of taking it easy in his old age and using that brain of his to create goals.

No. That's not the reason either.

Yes it is. We used to win games when Gerrard put Owen and Torres through on goal with the keeper to beat. Then he was reduced to putting in crosses for Carroll, and then reduced to running around trying to work hard.

That makes you mentally tired, and leads to mistakes and missed opportunities. If our strategy this season in games had been to keep Gerrard as fresh as possible for the entire 90 minutes, he'd have been putting Suarez and Sterling through on goal.

The notion that our strikers have been wasteful is not entirely fair. They are trying to finish difficult chances and have to put power on them. Or they have to beat three defenders so that by the time they strike the ball they're out of breath. We haven't wasted that many clear chances this season. We've just had plenty of possession and looked dominant without really creating clear chances. Gerrard is the only midfielder we have with that ability, so we shouldn't be working him into the ground. Gerrard and Suso should both get a free pass. And it should be up to the other cunts to make up for it.

Where did I say anything about our striker(s) being wasteful? (although this is part of the problem). The reason we've had so many shit results, is due to multiple failings. Missed chances, defensive errors, shit goal-keeping, losing the ball in the middle of the field......Blaming it on Gerrard alone is ludicrous.

I presumed that wastefulness was the reason you had in mind. Yes I agree with those multiple failings but what the fuck can you do about them with no money and a paper thin squad? The solution is to use what we have effectively to cover up for those failings. Which Steven Gerrard is capable of doing.

I'm not blaming him personally. It's up to Rodgers to take 5 mins out of his all important training session. Pull Allen to one side and go look mate, you cover 12 km per game. Gerrard covers 12. Next week Gerrard is going to cover 10 and you're going to make up the other 2. That's the deal. Sucks for you, but shit happens you know. Deal with it. And that's the problem solved.

Allen was impressive when he came on. Great runs into the box and unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

It was great to der how we manned up their box the whole night!! We have not done that for ages... thats how we make Anfield a fortress again!!

Ah! Yes! Rodgers! Not Gerrard. If Allen wasn't pulling his weight, it's wrong to fault Gerrard. The problem is, that Allen was filling in for Lucas, so there was only so much running he could do too.

Like I said, multiple failings. Maybe Rodgers shouldn't have played Allen out of position? Maybe Allen shouldn't have been such a lazy cunt? Or maybe Suarez shouldn't be a racist, and should fuck off back to Uruguay.
