If you view Allen as a DM I'd agree, but I don't think he'll play there long-term.
This.

And Pete, yes, I think it's reasonable to expect 8-10 goals from him per season, assuming he doesn't play as a DM. Since Lucas' return, (even though he's a bad run of form lately) he's definitely looking like he likes playing an attacking role. I think we're likely to see him start scoring in the near future.

I just feel if we already have one DM (lucas) who wont really be scoring, then we should be expecting goals from the other 5 offensive players.

We used to get 6-8 our of Xabi and he was a holder to begin with.

Obv im not expecting that out fo Allen this season as he has played as the holder but thats what im after next season at the very least.

Which he wont get im afraid.

Alonso's best was 5 in all comps according to lfchistory.net.

I just dont feel he's as good as people think Ryan. I'll admit, i have gone a bit far on this, hes not as bad as i make out. But i certainly dont think hes as good as you and others make out. You are only taking this stance as you feel you need to back him. It was money wasted in my opinion. The midfield have been fucking woeful this season and its a huge problem at the minute. More so than the Strikers. Its down to the system. I dont like it one bit. Yeah its lovely having 72% possesion against Villa but where did that get us? We arent Barca. Rodgers needs to realise that.

Anyway. I dont think Rodgers will be here long enough to see this 'project' out. Not what I want, as im fed up to the back teeth of chopping and changing all the time. But im just not sure on these owners, and if it isnt going to plan by Xmas 2013, i can see Rodgers on his way.

Mate, I take your point. I guess this is a wait and see one; there's not a single bit of me that is worried about what Allen will or won't bring to us.

I just think he's a very good footballer, and he'll be one for us.

Started great, been poor second half of the season so far but still think there are signs that he'll turn out to be a good player for us. Midfield still needs a nasty cunt in there though. The suggestion of a Mascherano type player was scoffed at but it's that type we desperately need.

but if we stay with this three man central midfield what and who are we going to change ? Surely over this season and next it will stay as Allen , lucas and Gerrard which so far hasn't worked too well .

I don't think we need a nasty cunt necessarily, just someone that can control the game. Right now we have too many players (in all positions) that become lost when things start to turn against us a little bit. No one steps up apart from Suarez who can't do everything.

I've watched quite a few games where the player that calms Barcelona down and gets them going is Iniesta - the CL final against Utd being a great example. Not a midfield enforcer or necessarily the type of player you'd expect to lead the team forward but he can.

Indeed, and I reckon Allen has it in him to be that type of player, but he won't be able to do it on his own. We need (a) strengthening at DM and (b) others further forward to be more mobile when we have the ball.

Very interesting thread this.

Rodgers want us to retain possession and play teams off the park. More emphasis on game intelligence and quick feet, than on power and steel.

Why he obviously rates a player like Allen as he does, a player whom btw isn't affraid of getting stuck in himself.

This is also the reason why an Iniesta would instantly make us a better team compared to a Gerrard type of player. This imo even compared to a Gerrard at the top of his game, as he's never been a player that thrives from tippy-tappy football, much more so from power, strength and sheer will. The best the game has ever seen perhaps in that perspective but not a type that's ready made for a manager like Rodgers.

Rodgers wants his team to maintain possession, interchange passes no-end and keep it all ticking at a very high pace. Iniesta does that better than anyone in todays game and that is why I believe we should desperately seek a player with attributes in that mould --> CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN fits that bill, as Rodgers are already well aware of.

Just for the record, I love Gerrard to bits, one of my favourite players, ever. The game-plan under Rodgers, combined with the fact he's seemingly had a hard time ever since that bar-brawl however has changed his role at the club. Sad but true.

I think for Allen or other players of his type to be successful at any club you need players who move intelligently and preferably at pace.

Currently apart from suarez we have no one who make those types of runs, maybe sterling but he is too young to make the correct runs consistantly. Players like Sturridge, Ince and sterling should offer us more of those types of runs. Which in turn should free some of the burden from Suarez allowing us more options for through passes for Allen to make.

Having said that I am not sure if Rodgers wants his players making those types of runs, he should though.

Agree with a lot of that DaHuge.

..................................Lucas....................................
......Allen/Henderson...............Eriksen/Shelvey.......
Gerrard/Sterling.....Borini/Suarez......Sturridge/Ince

Suso will hopefully come back stronger too and Enrique, Johnson and Downing could then add up the numbers from the wingbacks.

Could work.

Just read all this.

I asked when we signed him what we were getting and was assured he oozed class.
He doesnt.
Hes bang average. He is no better than Henderson.
And we paid 15m for him.
FIFTEEN million.

Oh and Shelvey who cost us 2m is FAR better than both.
Just to think we paid 32m for Allen and Henderson.
What CM could we NOT have afforded for that?

These are the same fucking shit mistakes we were making under Rafa signing 3 players when we needed one.
That said we would probably spend the 32m on Lee Cattermole.
I fucking hate our club, its full of dickheads.

There's no doubt he's struggling, but it's nothing a good rest wouldn't fix.

He's a lovely footballer and I have no concerns about him.

This from the man who calls Lucas as "Super man"

I think the words "volatile" and "eccentric" were invented for you.....

Hansern means we're nowhere near being in a position yet to judge Allen as a Liverpool player on either of those criteria. And he's right.

He's nowhere near as bad as Henderson. He's done more for us in a few months than Henderson has done in 18.

Yawn. Do it whenever you like, Oncy, but if you give a stuff about doing it meaningfully, you'll need to wait quite a while longer.
