No doubt a club will be waiting to take a punt on him, but unlikely to be us. Signing a player bases on the back of having a breakout tournament is an idea that would make Edwards break out in a rash.

Slot will be tasked with salvaging the expense of tbe Nunez deal. An article in the Guardian suggested Slot and Bielsa use the same 4231 that sees Nunez producing decent output for Uruguay. We may not like it, but I'd wager the club will see developing and adapting to Nunez is going to be preferable to either a) spending big in an inflated market or b) taking a punt. You can argue they already did both with Nunez and that's kinda the point.

And a market seemingly bereft of top quality strikers if the Euros are anything to go by.

Shame there is shortage of great strikers. Would probably need to bet on potential.

Karim Konate or Sesko (not possible to 2025).

I'd be happy betting on potential. There's no stand out (affordable) candidates otherwise. I have zero clue who's an option so I look forward to being pleasantly surprised

If you're happy betting.

Well, there's an obvious candidate for #9 who's also happy to bet.

In fact, he'd probably bet on himself. (Sorry I can't bring myself to say his name but you know who I'm taking about)

There's the obvious established candidates; Toney, Watkins, etc. they'll cost a bomb though

After becoming Eng-Ger-Land hero and legend - no chance

Watkins would be great for us but is on the older side and would cost a fortune.

Exactly. It'd be great to get him, but he shouldn't be a target due to cost and age. Same wit hall established strikers atm. Better gambling on a forward, as we have a few who can score anyway. Spend the bug bucks on the DM/potential cb we need

We can't keep buying 22-24 year olds all the time. Yes older players in their peak are more expensive, like Allison and Van Dijk but see where they took us.
If we can find a proven 26-28 year old striker we should go for it.

Do you see either Watkins or Toney as being in the Allison / Van Dijk bracket?

I don't think we have the luxury of paying through the nose for 28/29 year old strikers.

Wasn't specifically talking about them. I'd rather avoid paying the English premium.

I feel more comfortable buying 18-24 year old forwards than older ones. The further back the pitch you go the older I’d be more comfortable I would feel. Once you get to 28 it’s a no-go. Especially if they haven’t played in England. Even more if they have injury problems. And fuck no if they are called Thiago.

Obviously because of longevity, so I'm with you there. I feel embarrassed to even mention it since it was such a long time ago, but we bought King Kenny when he was 26-27.
I think it's worth it sometimes. Like imagine if we had Kane upfront instead of Darwin?
Instant impact imo.

Kane is one of the best around so is a very different proposition to some of the names mentioned in this thread who are a tier (or two) below him.

That said, I don't think there is any point trying to get a player like that right now. Given that we are in transition it's better to get a player that can develop with the team rather than one who will be done by the time we're (hopefully) looking for that extra bit of quality to take us all the way.

Weren't we in the dev phase when Van Dijk was signed?

I think most forwards are at their most deadly when they are younger and have that lack of fear/overconfidence of youth. You can make a list of those who do perform in later years, but equally you can make a list of those who burnt bright like Fowler, Owen, Rooney, etc.

Kenny was a completely different era so I don’t think there is a fair comparison. Despite me listing 3 players for two decades ago.

To be honest, I wouldn’t want to see Kane labouring up front for us. He’s been shite every time I’ve seen him this last year.
