If I remember correctly, teeth and possibly bones can be tested in a method similar to carbon dating.

The idea is that whenever there is a major nuclear event/catastrophe in her world, increased levels of radiation get partially stored/recorded in your teeth, providing a sort of age history.

It's actually very interesting stuff, but I'm not familiar with the details.
