Todays Hero or Zero is a current player..

Probably the Hero or Zero that may spark the biggest debate...

To some he is a Wonderman and can do no wrong, to others they cant see what he brings to the side..

Does he hold the team back, or is he pivotle to any success required of this current Liverpool squad ?

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva's relationship with such brutish hyperbole is one well-documented in recent years. His story is often recited, never forgotten: The fall and rise of the Brazilian boy who proved so many wrong, rewriting a narrative seemingly carved in stone.

Despite what was predicted of him, he became the archetypal underrated central midfielder, a player whose lack of ostentatiousness with the ball pointed to unwavering, consistent effectiveness without it. Yet still that was never enough; for some, acceptance of him and his ability was an embrace of the club's fall in stature, league position and everything else on top.

But eventually, even those who berated him throughout his early years at Anfield accepted belatedly, begrudgingly, that Lucas was a player of some importance. From boo-boy to beloved, Lucas stands tall upon a path rarely taken. No longer was he the straggly-haired, awkward-looking 20-year-old jeered off the pitch by his own supporters, but a Brazilian international regarded as an essential cog in Brendan Rodgers' side. A lesser player would have crumbled by then. Many have.

Now seems the opportune moment to finish this familiar tale. Lucas, and all those who backed him from the beginning, can triumphantly walk into the sunset as the credits roll. And they all lived happily ever after.

But football is no fairy-tale, particularly after two worrisome injuries in the past 2 years, and now a third to the 27-year-old. There is no certainly no guarantee of a happy ending. Not yet.

Already the story might be changing, as over the last year the Brazilian has found it difficult to recapture what form he once had. His time as the under appreciated youngster taught him fortune in football can be fugacious. Now he must fight that and maintain his reputation, as he quickly realises nothing is ever perfect in football.

What do I think ?? he ain't a Brazilian... he can't be as he has the touch of a flamin donkey !!! Coutinho now that is a Brazilian player..

Neither a Hero or Zero for me.. just an above average player that has earned a 'cult status' in what was once a very average side, with the potential of being a hero from time to time...

*cue @Ryan coming to his defence*

There are a few things you can call him for, but his touch isn't one. He'll take the ball under all sorts of pressure and lay it off comfortably.

Tricky one for me. On his day he is an absolute beast of player. He does so much that goes unnoticed. Then again I've lost count of how many times he's given away a stupid foul/pen by just being clueless. For me I'll go Zero but I'm probably being a bit harsh.

Gives 100 % every time, understands the club and fans, a humble lad that just want to improve and win in a red shirt.
Capable of both great and awful performances and even though I'm not sure there is a place for him in a title chasing side but certainly in the squad.

Easy. Hero.

That's my reason not voting him a hero...

The fact he understands the club ain't a big enough reason imho...

Ryan Babel understood the club but he was gash... Twitter hero though...

Yep - If he plays consistently at the level I know he's capable of I'd love him. Never mind hero he'd be a legend. Fact is injuries, form and being a bit clueless conspire to make that never happen. With Gerrard in his new position and Hendo playing mint I think it will be tough for him to get his place back to be honest.

I've lost count of the amount of misplaced passes coming from Lucas...

Given his passing stats that's quite a condemnation of your counting skills.

The "touch of a donkey" comment, though, had already alerted most on here that you've never actually watched the game.

Given the performance against Arsenal it's hard to see him in the team at Anfield barring injury.

Away from home, however, is a different story. He's been very good for us for years and been appreciated more by opposing managers since the CL game against Inter than his own supporters. He's a hero and no matter what any posters on here want to suggest its already been determined by the Kop.

Giving away fouls may come with the turf of the role. Gerrard's not been error free in that regard and if Lucas had given that penalty away against Arsenal we'd be hearing about that for months. He's never quite hit the heights he did just before his first injury - he was world class for half a dozen games before that and it looked like all the hype was going to come true and I don't think he's going to again. But Brendan will get the best from him and he'll put his heart 100% into it. His courage through all the grief he got in his early years (when I thought he was as shit as Cissokho) is inspirational.

Hero for me.

Never heard a peep out of the guy in a negative way about the club/playing time/injuries/wages/transfer requests plus he's a good player that all his teammates seem to love.

I'm not gonna say hero until he wins something better than the league cup and plays a big part in it though.

Not sure what the definition of hero is for us, but he gives his all, loves the club, is a model pro and has a brilliant attitude. Regardless of what many people (it's hardly a minority) think about his contribution, and how it's understated by some, and overstated by others, he's EXACTLY the sort of personality you want in your squad and in your dressing room. And as said, there are many games where someone in his role, doing the tidying up, keeping the midfield flowing and doing the shitty work that no one notices, is essential.

His attitude is top class, he's one of our more improved players and at times he's played an important role in the team. However, apart from a brief spell before his current injury he hasn't done the latter especially well IMO. Too often he's undone his own decent unsung work with poorly executed tackles which have put us back into danger. Deserves better than being called a "zero" but for me he falls short of passing the "hero" exam.

50/50.

What's he done mama mia? Shown up at an above average level in a few games. Average in many others. What heroic moments do you see? Educate us under appreciators?

Momo Sissokho - 14 votes
Lucas Leiva - 8 votes
SCM - shambolic

I don't really agree with hero status being given to either, Momo gets alot of love because of the injury he went through and the fact that at his best, he was a beast (albeit too briefly), Lucas isn't getting it because he's a current player who still divides opinion (some think he's under-appreciated, some of his fans overstate his worth).

I'm not sure why he's even included really, I thought that the hero status thing here was something we were able to judge in hindsight. I guess Momo is a cult hero, Lucas is still playing for us and continues to be an up and down player, despite his other more endearing credentials.

Yeah, I'm just being a dick. Note that I didn't vote hero or zero in either thread.
