He cost buttons (£7m is hardly bank busting in this day and age) and has been, overall a pretty good signing, even if he only ends up being a short term player. He started his career with us in great form, played too many games and hit a brick wall. He then had injuries which disrupted him getting a shot at the first team. By all accounts, Rodgers had his reservations but Enrique worked hard to get back to his initial form and won him over. The Downing comparison isn't really reasonable nor true unless you want to throw perspective out the window - Downing cost three times as much and despite an upturn in form of late, has very rarely hit the standards that Enrique has in his best games for us. People have short memories. Has he been consistently brilliant? No, but for about half the time he's been here he's looked an excellent bit of business whatever role he's had to play (I don't see why position is a stick to beat him with).
Modo's point was valid, even if he did struggle to express it well, writing him off because of what he's done in the past and continuing to do so isn't really acknowledging the facts about what he's done for us. He hasn't been "poor", he had a poor spell and then got injured and struggled to get back in the side, when he has figured for a significant spell he's been a success. Of course, selective reasoning would say that 'he's been playing at a shite level for 6 years in England and had a dodgy spell for us, so ergo I'm right". A touch of perspective and a dose of reality would say he cost us £7m(!!) and has been a relatively good buy whom, when at his best has looked top draw. Consistent? Maybe not in terms of his overall career with us, but when he gets in the side, the two long runs he has had have been productive and of a high standard.
What the fuck him being in England 6yrs and getting relegated once for one whole season has to do with anything is beyond me. He was excellent for Newcastle before we signed him. Steve Finnan didn't start getting the plaudits until two seasons before we signed him after playing for a similarly midtable club and fighting relegation, he didn't get his big move until he was 27 after playing in the Premiership for 6 years and gradually developing into a good fullback. Enrique was always a good prospect, like Finnan, he's been a good buy overall and certainly not the disaster Ryan made out, nor as poor overall as others have said. When he's figured consistently he's done well, aside from a dip in form at the back end of last season.
All this self championing bollocks is fucking sad, unless you throw some perspective into the mix then it all becomes a bit selective and relative. And at the end of the day, who really gives a flying fuck?
