Gylfi Sigurdsson

After the chatter started about him mid-season I took time out to watch him whenever he was on the box - I was impressed, I hadn't noticed him before but he is a very stable midfielder, good control, keeps the ball moving (forwards most of the time) and likes to get forward .. and he scores goals, and damn good ones too. Excellent shot on him. I think he would be a great pick-up and consign Shelvey to the bench where he belongs (because he is no-where near 1st team quality).

Only thing i think will be a problem is that he wants to play regularly. Im amusing BR wants gylfi as gerrrard's backup and if so he may not want that.

Bollocks. He would jump at the chance of playing both for us and for Rodgers.

He seems a likely signing. If you wouldn't want to learn from Steven Gerrard then you would need your head examining.

He reminds me of Gerrard a little bit. He can strike a ball so well from outside the box, which is something we desperately lack at the moment.

Given Stevies fitness record of late and think it's fair to say he'll play a fair bit Glen

I'm guessing the arrival of another young attacking central midfielder would spell the end for Shelvey.

I'm not particularly keen on Sigurdsson for exactly this reason. Gerrard has a couple of years left in the tank, and in Shelvey, we have a promising understudy. It isn't the kind of player we're particularly crying out for. If we're looking to buy an attacking midfielder, we need to look at someone in the Silva or Mata mould i.e. a trequartista, rather than a box-to-box type.

IMO Shelvey is all about potential but he certainly isn't good enough for our first team and that means if we are serious then he's not good enough for the bench either. Perfect solution would be to loan him out to a PL team for a couple of seasons and see how it progresses, we have had plenty of youngsters with 'potential' the vast majority of who turn out to be less than imagined.

Sigurdsson isn't about potential, he's 3 years older than Shelvey and at 24 (in Spetember) he's IMHO (based only on watching Swansea over the 2nd half of last season) already good enough to command a first team slot ahead of Spearing / Adam / Henderson.

We're more likely to see 2 "attacking" CMs in our side than people are realizing. It's very possible that the plan would be to pair Gyilfi and Gerrard in front of Lucas. Meaning lot of place for Shelvey and Henderson to pick up games. Meanwhile Shelvey will love BR's game. Quick pass and move, takes away his weaknesses and accentuates his strengths.

Shelveys not the most mobile though is he? Great passer though.
Exactly, you don't need to be fast to be part of a successful pass and move team. Barca isn't full of rapid players. You need to always be comfortable on the ball, play with the head up and take the simple option most of the time. If Shelvey can stick to keeping it simple everything else is natural for him and his lack of pace won't be a big deal. BR coming in makes Shelvey's chance of making it improve tons in my estimation.

I would move Adam and Spearing. And try and bring in someone like Clasie, and an attacking midfielder in the mould of Silva or Mata (someone like Martin, Eriksen, Dzagoev, Dembele etc.) rather than Sigurdsson.

Unlike most posters here, I know Sigurdsson more from Hoffenheim than Reading and Swans (I follow German league more closely than EPL). His ability to score from midfield consistently is what set him apart immediately; I think he scored in his first AND his second game in Hoffenheim. He is very good on set pieces, both shooting and delivery. His overall play does remind me a bit of Gerrard, although he cannot match Stevie for natural talent and athletic ability (very few can). We desperately need goals from midfield, so I think he could be useful. What I'm not quite sure is if Gylfi can play together with Gerrard in CM. After all they are both right-footed and have similar tendencies to roam and run with the ball so in theory either Gerrard or Gylfi would be better paired with a pass-first player like Aquilani, Shelvey or Adam (and Lucas in behind).

Cheers rurik. Where you based out of interest ? And hows Babel getting on ?

I'm based in the US 🙂 But I prefer watching the German league in recent years - making exception for Liverpool of course.

Babel is still Babel. If anything, he is going backwards.

I think he can easily work with gerrard. With lucas behind them, they will have more licence to get forward and try to cause havok. Plus Gylfi knows how BR likes his teams to play so im sure he has discipline.

Gerrard is 32. Gufli Sigggulderssonn is 22. Bring him in. If he's in the mould of SG then give him time to bed in. sick of players having to be the finished article immediately or they are labelled shit.

How many times can the press re-hash the same story ?
I think the answer you are looking for is 18.

19 is just one to many. Hence the ol' saying: the race to no. 19.

What are we talking about?
