Babb was captain of Coventry before coming to us and as said had a superb World cup.
I wonder if was it was the culture at the time at the club, that destroyed him as a player, as up till him coming to us he looked like an excellent prospect
No it was that Babb played brilliantly in 442 and was rubbish in 352 which we deployed that season.

His position was irrelevent Dreamy. He just wasn't very good.

He was excellant for Coventry in a 442 and was excellant at the world cup (granted Mcgrath was so good Baggio put him in his team of the world cup, I'll never forget the passage of about 30 seconds when he cleared 3 balls in the box in a row)

And being the super chalkboard master you are you can appreciate it is completely different being 1 of 2 central defenders in a 442 and being asked to play in a wide position of back 3 when you have had zero coaching in it.

Couple that with the wing backs we had at the time and our attack minded set up and you can see why not just Babb but most Liverpool defenders struggled in that period.

Most Liverpool defenders suffered during that period cos they weren't very good, not because of the system. Babb, Ruddock, Kvarme were all shite, not hamstrung by a formation.

I'm pretty aware of the differing requirements needed in a back 3 versus a back 4, but the biggest factor is whether you're actually any fucking use. And that's where Phil Babb fell at the first hurdle.

This has looked very likely ever since Rodgers was announced as boss. He impressed me this year, and a whole lot of other people, too. I'm not sure exactly where he fits, or how Rodgers intends on using Gerrard, but for now I'm pleased to see us adding someone to the squad who looks like he's capable of finding the goal from midfield. It's also a good price for an athletic 22 year old with a decent amount of potential.

18 appearances in the Premier League. 7 goals, 4 assists. Long may that continue.

Doesn't Rodgers play with two attacking midfielders anyway? I hope we can just tie this deal up soon, I have a good feeling about this guy.

Nope, he'll be one of the midfield 3.

Would that maximize his talents though mate? He's a great finisher and crosser, and can shoot with either foot ... Him interchanging with Suarez behind Carroll (or whoever) could be devastating, and would lessen his defensive responsibilities.

It's not about maximising his talents though mate - we're past that with Gerrard, or we should be trying to get past it anyway - it's about maximising the team's talents.

The wide man in Rodgers' front 3 has to be up and down the wing, capable of carrying the ball from deep, capable of beating players, and creating space for others. I don't think that's Gerrard's go anymore. the role he's playing for England right now is what he'll evolve into. Look at Scholes and Lampard - they stopped making the late trademark runs into the box years ago because they haven't got the engine anymore, and because they can offer more in a restrained CM role for the team. There's a reason why Gerrard isn't the 20 goal a season man anymore.

Hard to argue. Between gerrard, henderson, adam, Shelvey and Sigurdsson, we should be well catered for.

We need a more creative midfielder.

See, as I understand it, we'll have 2 inside forwards (who don't hug the by line) fir creativity too. Suarez and A. N. Other off the striker.

Plus, I think shelvey could be a good creative outlet, as could henderson if he gets his confidence up. Sigurdsson will. Bomb up regardless and Adams passing can cause giant problems
I think we could be ok

No, we need a Silva/Sneijder/Kaka/Kagawa/Mata type. Soemone who can create in the 10 role.
