Transfer Policy & Summer 2025

They are second only to Chelsea over the last 5 years (using either net or gross spend), going off accounts figures (2019-2024).

GROSS SPEND

Chelsea £1,726m
Arsenal £990m
Man City £970m
Man Utd £917m
Spurs £830m
Liverpool £731m
Villa £692m
Newcastle £625m

NET SPEND

Chelsea £981m
Arsenal £773m
Man Utd £713m
Spurs £639m
Newcastle £492m
Villa £442m
Man City £400m
Liverpool £335m

Chelsea though. Wow, that is insane.

I think if there's deals to be made then we'll sell some that people aren't expecting. Diaz is at peak age for a winger and his output isn't that special, so if a big enough bid comes in I can see him going
I've thought all along that Diaz would be the big sale this Summer and it's a lot less of a blow than previous big departures, probably on a par with someone like Emre Can (in terms of out going talent, though he went on a free), who was half decent but not essential, and that's pretty much the way we have to look at it with Diaz, except we'll hopefully get a biggish fee off some sucker like Barca.

I do like Diaz because at least he generally gives his all when he plays, even if the end product is patchy as fuck, but he's hardly indispensable.

Agreed. Good player but not great and a bit inconsistent. 2 years left on his deal and feels like a great time to sell.

Absolutely no clue who will pay. Saudis the most likely. I don't think any of the European clubs will pay us anywhere near 40m for him.

Barca or Saudi clubs seems the most likely.
As I mentioned elsewhere : why would Barca, who have the potential Golden Balls winner in Raphina on their LW, and Fati as backup, want a 27 year old who will cost them at least £40m+?! They won't is the answer to that one.

Deco loves him. Fati isn’t an option for them

It doesn't make any sense for Barca to buy him but common sense hasn't always factored into their transfer strategy so perhaps that'll work in our favour.

Hard to see any big club pay top dollar for Diaz in the summer to be honest.

Wow, so no trophies to show for a 771m net spend over five years and consistent backing in a settled club (bar an initial FA Cup with someone else’s team before you spent anything)? Compare with a Klopp over five years (and transforming the club, the fan base and playing style).

Arteta is nowhere near the level of a top manager.

Same as Frogfish, I doubt there will be as much churn in the 1st team squad as some think.

GK : Kelleher
RB : Trent
LB : Tsimakis
MF: Elliott, Morton
F: Nunez, Doak, Chiesa

For reasons of salary, homegrown, potential, continuity, leadership and value I can see us keeping Robbo, Quansah, Gomez, Endo, Diaz, Jota. They seem to be on many posters hitlist but we can't change too much in one window.

A few of the kids might step up to bolster the squad and a few will leave for petty cash.

And despite all this, if an opportunity arises there might be one regular starter leaving at the right price as a wild card.

Given the above and some decent prices for the sold players, I reckon we will spend big on just a few key targets.

Left back, attacking midfielder and striker.

LB leave to the data geeks but Kerkez, Guerrieiro, Mitchell on the list.
AM : Cunha
S: Alvarez
Wild card: Anthony Gordon to replace Luis Diaz. More likely next year but might depend on whether Newcastle are in Champions league

I'd be shocked if we don't get a CB.

Can't see Alverez leaving AM either.

We would need a right back too, and unfortunately, I don't see Alvarez leaving Atletico.
So, one striker will come in I think, and we keep Jota for now as back up option.
If Diaz leaves, a new winger probably comes in.
Bajcetic comes back to be a squadie in midfield.
We do need CB back up too.

If Salah and VVD signs for 2 yrs, the replacing Salah train will wait until next summer.

Why? Has Diaz ever shown any inclination for a Saudi move? At 27 he's in his prime with plenty of time for that move in a couple of years.
He’s been massively underpaid for years. It could be his only chance to swell those coffers.

Well that's relative (to other players) and I'd assume if he extends his contract he'll get a nice raise. That aside (and with endorsements and bonuses) he's not exactly a pauper !

Basic Salary (probably double with endorsements and bonuses)? Maybe Mr. Beamrider can tell us !
2021-2026. Luis Díaz signed a 6 year, $16,016,000 contract with the Liverpool F.C., including an average annual salary of $2,669,333.

Diaz will leave together with Nunez I'm absolutely certain of it.
28 years old, underpaid, with 2 years left on his contract, with no talk of extending it. Not selling would be pure incompetence.

Maybe. I already said I'm not that arsed either way but we then need to replace his energy, possession and double figure goals. That's easier said than done.

Honestly I was so hoping that we'd buy Kvara. I'm sure that we were scouting him. I mean we don't get a Georgian keeper without knowing about his teammate.
No clue who replaces Diaz.

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors. Maybe we did and he showed no interest. I mean at the end of last season we didn't look like a good option for someone like him. This Summer everyone should be beating our door down.

Well ...
1. it's The Anfield Talk and
2. It says nothing about Diaz wanting a move - just he may be of interest to the Saudi league, they are probably 'interested' in a 1,000 players the vast majority of whom have no interest in them !

No, its from the Echo

Nobody really knows what’s going on in his head, or his family’s. We know he’s open to a move to Spain, so if Barcelona came calling, I’d expect him to push for it. As for Saudi, Diaz grew up in a very impoverished, underdeveloped part of Colombia, and it’s always going to be difficult for a player to turn down £400k a week tax-free, or whatever the offer might be. Duran, also from Colombia, has already shown his hand. Personally, I don’t have any ill will over it. We can debate the sporting integrity and the impact on their reputation in the game all day long, but there is something satisfying about the richest oil barons on earth throwing vast sums of money at players who couldn’t even afford boots as kid, especially if some of that money finds its way back to their communities. In some ways, it might be the most realistic form of wealth redistribution that exists.

I’d like to think Diaz recognises what he has here. People complain about his numbers and output, but I believe he’s one of those players fans will miss more than they realise. He’s someone who would run through walls for you. I’d need to be properly convinced that any replacement would bring the same level of commitment, skill and drive before even considering letting him go. Personally I think we have enough to be getting on with before messing with LW, which is probably the best stacked position in the Premier League for quality, but it will depend where his head is at and what offers come forward.
