With Alonso on his way and an able replacement hard to come by, we might see Gerrard playing permanently next to Mascherano behind Yossi or Voronin.

Under Houllier, Gerrard was a monster.. Though he never scored as many goals , he was as complete a center midfielder as I have seen. He tracked back, created, scored, did everything we could ever want from a center mid and then some.

Of course Rafa likes his cm to be disciplined and restrained, but the league is there to be won and surely he knows that this season the fans expect it from him.

He is the best player this club has ever seen, and center midfield is his best position..

Play him there Rafman and buy Villa and we WILL win the league.

SG isn't getting any younger, it pains me to say, and I think his energies are best exploited further up the pitch.

Not only is the point of concern here the fact that it would be taking Gerrard away from the role he is most effective and damaging to the opposition in. It would also leave us very weak there with the replacements mentioned. Yossi did a good second half of the season last year, but is he was our only threat in that position: I'd be worried.

that's just it really, yes there are times when we play yossi in the hole or two up front but when we play gerrard in the hole we are a central midfielder short. lucas just is not good enough there and thats presuming masch plays every game!

no matter how you look at it we need a new central midfielder once alonso goes as well as gerrard playing there at times.

Well if we see Gerrard back in the middle again then hopefully Torres will be fit to give his new partnership a chance. The Keane/Torres thing never really had chance to get going.

Jay Spearing is our new CM.

He's not very "new" is he?

as a 4th choice emerging player spearing is fine. i'd be happy to see him there and lucas sold but this season thats not likely.

I don't like it, but I'd say that is how Rafa would see should Xabi leave.

Just saying this is what we get if Alonso goes and we don't sign anybody.

Why? Manc utd and Chelsea arguably have stronger sides (maybe the bookies agree/disagree i dunno?) that would expect to finish above that side you posted and Arsenal finished the season very strongly losing 1 in 20 odd games so they aren't as shit as people seem to think.

Actually it could go more 433, as Lucas is more of a crap Gerrard than a crap Alonso.

You mean 4 1 2 2 1?

Yep. I think playing him as a box to box midfielder would only shorten his playing time. He's no longer a 21 year old who can be up and down the pitch and not feel it in the next match. Also, his hamstrings were a notable problem in the past. I think as a support striker he doesn't have to run as much, and when he does, it's using his energy in the right places, to damage the opposition.

How on earth will Manchester United PLC have a stronger team next season?
Ronaldo & Tevez out for Valencia & Owen is terrible business.

Chelsea are on the verge of losing their two best central defenders and have no wingers of any class.

Arsenal are losing 70+ (over the last 2.5 seasons) goals from their team any minute now. They lost 1 in 20+ games yes, they won about 10/12 of those.

Yup. It is a nonsense to say Manu will be stronger next season after losing (arguably) the best player in the world, followed out the door by Tevez. The replacements are from the bargain basement, thus far.

Well ive just checked a few bookmakers for latest premiership odds and they have us as 3rd favourites as far as i can see. So maybe my claim that a team starting with Lucas at centre mid instead of Alonso would finish 3rd or 4th is not being unrealistic.

Liverpool will be installed as the favourites to sign Aston Villa winger Ashley Young if Xabi Alonso is sold to Real Madrid.

That move is looking increasingly likely as the Spain international is keen on a switch to the Bernabeu and a £27million deal could be concluded by the end of the week.

Liverpool are keen on Stewart Downing but consider Young to be an upgrade of the Middlesbrough winger.

Hmm..

Have some fucking faith man.

My head would explode if that happened.

I'd be over the moon if we signed Young.
