I would not go so far as to say I feel sorry for them, but I get your drift Spidey. I think the problem is on here , and I am possibly not completely guiltless, although some make an art-form of it - some people always have to have the last word.

If you are so much as off a beat with your use of a word, you end up being asked to explain yourself - it's too much. I think I had to post several explanations of the term castoff, when Common sense should have indicated the situatioj. Too much having a go, not enough moving the debate on..
Local : I asked you to explain your meaning because I didnt know what the hell you were getting at ; your response was to say you'd wear your sandals and shorts and then back out of this 'increasingly tedious' thread.

You implied that we shouldnt get players from weaker mid-table clubs like Middletableborough; you then rephrased what you meant when it was clear that wasnt what you were implying. I wasnt having a go at you.

Since I wasnt the only one who didnt understand what you were trying (and failing) to get at, I guess I wasnt the only one with common sense.
Wasn't talking about you mate. There was others a little less polite than yourself. I guess at the end of the day, I'm very verbal and I get frustrated explaining things that I assume would be a given. For example, I'd hardly have a problem signing an Anelka type player. I was talking more about the Germaine signings of the world..

Also Modo - You'll advocate signing Nzogbia but not Johnson - when their true values probably aren't miles apart.

Have you actually seen much of Adam Johnson? He was superb for City at times last season and even in an England shirt and that's saying something!

I'll try to describe my view of Adam Johnson without using any profanity etc.

Let me start by saying that I was somewhat impressed with Adam Johnson while he still was at Middlesbrough. Probably when he just had his breakthrough. Looked very talented, though I didn't see much of him.

The reason I don't rate him is basically because I think he doesn't have any real game intelligence.
OK, he's quick, does some step overs and he can get passed the fullback from time to time. But IMO that isn't nearly enough.
I like wingers who can cut inside, switch positions with the one playing in the hole, provide through balls, crosses, finds team-mates, creates space...basically someone like Iniesta, Mata, Silva, Hazard, Xherdan Shakiri, Özil, Nuri Sahin even Wilshire and Ashley Young to some extent.

You'd probably not label any of these players as a "winger", but I'm really not that stuck on the word. These are examples of players who can start out wide but drift inwards swap positions etc. Basically team players, very able passers.

tbf Modo i too would like someone like silva/mata/iniesta/ozil/sahin/bestplayerintheworld

but i hasten to add, what you've described in your final paragraph, is stewart downing

DUM DUM DUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

When did Jack Wilshere become a 'wide' player? Iniesta isn't what you'd call a wide midfielder either more of an attacking mid. Neither is Ozil naturally suited to the wide role. Seems to me Modo that all you really want is some big names whether established or well known up and coming youngsters.

That's a tough question. Are we constrained by a budget? We just spent £20 Million on Henderson.
The only ones available on that list seems to be, Hazard, Mata and Shakiri. We did go after Young however, while I do have my concerns regarding him I think he's a lot better than Downing.
Maybe Jesusu Navas? But he's more of classic winger so to speak, hugs the line, no?
I'm not really that updated with regards to player price tags, So it's pretty hard for me to answer the original question. At least when it comes to wingers.

I've also backed signing N'zogbia despite him not being on the aforementioned list of players. I like the fact that he can defend, he's strong, he's quick, can play on both sides of the pitch, can cut inside and shoot and that he can dribble as well. Most of all he's available for a decent price, well at least that's what I've been expecting since he only has a year left.

Isn't the Navas the one who get's homesick when he travels about 20 miles from his mams house? He makes Dennis Bergkamp look like an astronaut.

I'm in agreement with Modo here. I don't rate Adam Johnson either. Looked a big prospect at Boro but since then i don't think he's delivered.

True Wilshare isn't a wide player, but I'm just saying he's the type of player who can play there.
I get what you're saying but Iniesta does often end up on the wing. Sure you can call him an attacking midfielder but he's just as capable being on the wing and cutting inside, as evident in the Euro's and the World cup.
The same goes for Özil.

This all kinda reminds me of when Gerrard was played on the right by Rafa. Gerrard isn't winger, is he?
But he drifted inside, had more of free role and scored 23 goals that season.

So that's three players who are at clubs in the Champions League, a little Spanish guy who has panic attacks and seizures whenever he leaves his hometown and Charles N'zogbia.

I can guess which one we would end up with there. Is he the sort of player that a team chasing the title should be in for?

There's few players who compare with Gerrard in his prime though.
