When did Jack Wilshere become a 'wide' player? Iniesta isn't what you'd call a wide midfielder either more of an attacking mid. Neither is Ozil naturally suited to the wide role. Seems to me Modo that all you really want is some big names whether established or well known up and coming youngsters.
True Wilshare isn't a wide player, but I'm just saying he's the type of player who can play there.
I get what you're saying but Iniesta does often end up on the wing. Sure you can call him an attacking midfielder but he's just as capable being on the wing and cutting inside, as evident in the Euro's and the World cup.
The same goes for Özil.

This all kinda reminds me of when Gerrard was played on the right by Rafa. Gerrard isn't winger, is he?
But he drifted inside, had more of free role and scored 23 goals that season.
There's few players who compare with Gerrard in his prime though.
True, first name that popped up.

That's a tough question. Are we constrained by a budget? We just spent £20 Million on Henderson.
The only ones available on that list seems to be, Hazard, Mata and Shakiri. We did go after Young however, while I do have my concerns regarding him I think he's a lot better than Downing.
Maybe Jesusu Navas? But he's more of classic winger so to speak, hugs the line, no?
I'm not really that updated with regards to player price tags, So it's pretty hard for me to answer the original question. At least when it comes to wingers.

I've also backed signing N'zogbia despite him not being on the aforementioned list of players. I like the fact that he can defend, he's strong, he's quick, can play on both sides of the pitch, can cut inside and shoot and that he can dribble as well. Most of all he's available for a decent price, well at least that's what I've been expecting since he only has a year left.
So that's three players who are at clubs in the Champions League, a little Spanish guy who has panic attacks and seizures whenever he leaves his hometown and Charles N'zogbia.

I can guess which one we would end up with there. Is he the sort of player that a team chasing the title should be in for?
You've got a point. But on the other hand Suarez would also have been in the CL but he joined didn't he?
Money talks I guess. Silva and Touré joined city who weren't' in the CL.

I was never against English players in general, just certain English wingers. Didn't mention Young earlier nor Wilshire.
It's kinda odd being called a bigot while championing a player like Cahill for +6 months.

Pardon me as I'm drunk, on my phone, and can't be bothered reading every page, but modo:

A) I don't care about "hype" (As themn or someone will testify as I don't know enough celebrities apparently)
B) was David Thompson ever hyped?
C) you do realise Liverpool is in England? I don't like the national team, but I don't constantly berate the country.

Hey Modo - Just for the record I don't think you are a bigot or a c**t! And just for the record I thought David Bentley was going to be next Beckham! I'm not sure if this reassures you or not....

So to save me goin through 17 pages whats modo doneto

a) be compared spidey (only joking spidey)
b) be turned into hitlers love child
c) an the ultimate put down of a flipy flop

It seems like a very bad night for our swedish friend.

George, Modo reckons you're English, and as such, you lack the keen eyed objectivity of a young Swede. He's not saying it's your fault or anything, it's just the way you are.

Since you're drunk, on a Tuesday night for some reason, I guess it's kinda pointless to give you somewhat of an answer right now. But here goes:
A) Good!
B) By us I guess, but it was probably just a bad example.

C) It was never about the country, it's football related.
As an outsider following English football, there seems to be a quite regular tendency to hype up certain domestic players despite them, in many cases, not being anywhere close as good as their foreign counter parts. Bentley, Wright-Philips, Joe Cole etc are just some of the players who were supposed to be the next big thing but it never really happened for them. The turning point for me was the national team and their somewhat "average" performances in the world cup and Euro's.
I used be one of those who really believed the hype about the team. England often had the best team on paper according to the press. The best defence, the strongest midfield and among the best strikers.
I guess it just dawned on me that maybe they weren't really that good?

So nowadays I try to be a bit more careful before I "believe the hype" , so to speak. I try to give credit where it's due. Fuck, I used to believe that Pennant was a good player.

Looking at the new generation of English players I'd say that I really rate Wilshire, Cahill, McEachran, Kelly, Smalling there's more but I can't remember them atm. I'm not saying that the rest are shit but I'm not really that excited about them.

Considering the recent rise in wages and transfer fees for young players in England, is this "hype" a contributor?
Will it put pressure English youths to perform on a level they're not really ready to perform at?
I'm not sure, possibly.

How do you mean?

I still think it's good that we have a core of English players and I also rate the English players I mentioned in that post.
It was never about having English players for the sake of it.
I'm just not that overly exited about the wingers I listed earlier in this thread.

I saw this thread had 9 new pages since I last clicked on it yesterday. Here's me thinking something had happened re Adam Johnson.

How wrong I was.

Ha.. I was just about to post/ask the same thing.. I should have stayed on the Downing thread where I could have listened to Molby have a breakdown on every page.
