Walcott refuses to extend his contract

Still doesn't look like we're going to try to improve our problems infront of goal then, just add more numbers to players who 'can' score goals, rather than 'will' consistently score goals.

It's also a bit of a risky business this, going to the wire, Carroll to Newcastle if it happens will probably happen at the 11th hour. It's like a fucking mortgage chain, everything depending on everything else going through. Nervy stuff.

So frustrating. We've been waiting since Rafa's era to get three decent strikers, let alone four. If FSG want to have the new manager use his head, this should be absolutely crucial now - sign some fecking strikers!

Liverpool FC to bid for Arsenal's Theo Walcott if they can sell Andy Carroll before transfer deadline day

LIVERPOOL FC will launch a bid for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott if they manage to offload Andy Carroll before tomorrow night's transfer deadline.
The Gunners insist Walcott, who has entered the final year of his contract, is going nowhere during this window following talks between the England international and boss Arsene Wenger yesterday.
However, their resolve will be tested if Liverpool can generate sufficient funds to put a £15million offer on the table for the boyhood Reds fan.
It promises to be a hectic 24 hours at Melwood with Stoke City having emerged as favourites to sign Charlie Adam in a £5million deal.
Fellow midfielder Jay Spearing will also leave the club with a season-long loan at Bolton still his most likely destination.
With Adam and Spearing off the wage bill, boss Brendan Rodgers will be in a position to sign Fulham's Clint Dempsey for around £7million.
The USA international, who has been linked with the Reds all summer, is expected to finally get his dream move but whether he's the only new arrival depends largely on Carroll.
Liverpool remain keen to move the striker on and would happily accept West Ham's offer which was submitted last month.
The Hammers are prepared to pay all his wages and a £2million loan fee this season before signing him permanently for £17million next summer if they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Even though Liverpool wouldn't affectively bank that money for 12 months, the ECHO understands the owners would allow it to be spent prior to the window closing at 11pm tomorrow night.

If Carroll goes and a move for Walcott fails to come off then Rodgers has other attacking options lined up but despite reports there is no interest in Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge.

The Reds' biggest problem is convincing Carroll that Upton Park is an attractive enough proposition.

The club's £35million record signing has previously indicated that he wants to stay and fight for his place at Anfield.

And if Carroll was to leave he would prefer a move back to Newcastle but for that to happen the North East outfit would have to submit a drastically improved offer.

As well as Adam, Spearing and Carroll, Liverpool are also trying to find new clubs for Joe Cole and Danny Wilson before tomorrow's deadline.

Speaking ahead of tonight's Europa League play-off second leg with Hearts at Anfield, Rodgers admitted he's unable to make any more significant additions to his squad until he can convince others to move on.

“It’s great that those players would want to come here but the reality is we’re not in a position to do that,” he said.

“Financially, the club needs repair. The players who have been linked for those monies, I don’t have the ability to do that, certainly in this window anyway.

Rodgers and Walcott share the same agent. We must know he's interested if we're pursuing this.

Do we really need Walcott? He's not really a striker and we have 5/6 wide players now

Reading the London Evening Standard today there was a big article on thim, and him wanting to leave Arsenal for higher wages is not the only reason. He believes he was bought to Arsenal to play as a striker, and thats what he wants. The worrying thing in that report is that he himself admits he needs to play along with a big guy up front - now I wonder if anyone has told him we are going to be selling our big guy just to buy him ?

Personally I don't want him, he has good qualities but like Joe Cole - I don't think he has a solid frame of body and gets injured quite a bit, and therefore will never play a full season for us. I would rather wait till January window or find someone who is like Nikica Jelavic - a reliable goal scorer that can play ball and is physically strong. I think the only reason BR would want Walcott is mainly because he can play on the wing and up front if need be, but right now if we sell Carroll we need a PROPER striker.

Carroll shouldn't need convincing, he's perfect for West Ham and would be a star there.
To be fair - I think if he did make that move - it would put a lot of pressure on him to deliver, just like here. Yes the entire team maybe built around him, but I think ultimately the boy just wants to go home like E.T.

To those who think he can't 'serve it on a plate', you should watch him serving it on a plate here. For me, an assist shouldn't be about who touches it last before the goalscorer, that's a nonsense. It's about who does the work for the goal. A 'real' assist, in my opinion, is where a player opens up the defence and plays a ball to another player which is a 'one-touch' goal, or an easy goal. Walcott does that many times.

My impression is that Walcott doesn't not have enough football intelligence and creativity to play as an attacking midfielder/winger on the highest level. But he is a decent finisher, obviously has good basic technique and frightening pace - sounds like a striker who is being played out of position. I don't have an explanation why Arsene insists on sticking him on the wing and not up front like he wants. That's probably a big reason why he wants to leave. So if we are interested in Walcott, I hope it is as a striker, not a winger.

Sahin will feed him through balls all day long and woe is the team that dares to play with a high back line against us when Walcott is starting up front. And if they push the back line deeper, it will give much more room for Suarez and Allen to operate. I do think we need a quick striker. Remember how Eto'o was getting on the end of all the through balls for Barca before they switched to the current model with Messi in the middle? That could be our model with Suarez on the right wing (which I believe is his best position) and Borini, Oussama and Sterling competing for the place on the left.

That is a damn good point about forcing them to stretch themselves by playing a quick forward, I like the idea.

If Walcott is part of the long term plan just get him already and sort Carroll to Newcastle in Jan when they will be desperate with the african boys playing away.

Agree about Carroll, not about Walcott. The way things are going, he'll quite probably be a freebie this time next year.

What would be fantastic with Walcott is that we'd have all the front positions covered. Between Suarez, Walcott, Borini, Assaidi, Sterling we'd have five people competing for the front three slots. In the first three on that list, we'd have players who could play either LF, ST or RF, that would give us great versatility upfront. Rurikbird makes a great point about the pace and running onto the balls, it's kinda a bit like how we used to play with Torres as well, and we know how that worked. My opinion of this has changed from being a big fan of Walcott and liking the idea of him signing, to really wanting this deal to happen.

I don't recall ever seeing Walcott on the left. If Rodgers wants all three front players to be capable of playing in all three positions, I'm not convinced Walcott's the man for that. I also think rurikbird overpraises his finishing, which is patchy, and it bothers me that Wenger has never given Walcott a long run of games through the middle.

I don't think all 3 need necessarilly interchange though- like on Sunday- Suarez and Borini did exchange the right and central channels regularly whilst Sterling stayed on the left until we brought Carroll on. He could do that just fine.

Wenger has alot of blind spots though JJ. This might not be one of them, and we've seen it all with other players like Babel and Bellamy, whom probably played better wide despite 'preferring' to play in the middle, so I take your point, but anyway. I wouldn't mind him signing at all, but I don't think it really addresses our problem infront of goal, it just looks to spread the burden, without really appointing a consistent finisher.
