Spurs ratings

After a game against a quality opponent like Spurs I think it makes sense to do a ratings thread again.

Jones - 5.5. Looked very nervous, which is understandable after his last performance in Oldham and coming in with last-minute notice in such an important game. He was a bit lucky no Spurs player managed to get to the ball after he parried it uncertainly again and again. I thought maybe Pepe would have saved one of those two goals though. But have to give Jones credit - he didn't allow no major fuck ups, so at least he did better than Lloris in the opposite goal.

Johnson - 6.0. I didn't think his passing was that bad today, like other posters. He made a few nice attacking plays, got an important tackle on Bale at one point. But partially culpable for both goals.

Carra - 6.0. I thought he did alright, just played at his level. Maybe he was partially culpable for both goals like JJ, although I definitely wouldn't lay all the blame on him. Blocked several Spurs players' shots.

Agger 7.0. One of his best games for us this season. Made a few nice tackles and calm interceptions and few mistakes.

Enrique 6.5. Wonderfully timed pass for the assist and great strength to hold off the challenge in the seconds before that. I thought in defense he was too eager at times. A good game nonetheless.

Lucas 5.5. On the defensive side, there is not much to complain about Lucas's performance: he kept the area near our penalty box pretty much under control together with Gerrard, didn't commit unnecessary fouls (except the one that led to 2nd goal, but it shouldn't have been given) and won quite a few 50/50 balls for us. But his passing was inexplicably off. I think he is still not back to his best.

Gerrard 6.5. Quiet but mostly effective, + 0.5 for the penalty. It bothers me how little he uses his left peg now - for a CM this is not a good thing.

Coutinho 8.0. in the first half, 6.0 in the second (because he barely got the ball as Spurs dominated possession). Did we really get this player for 8.5 million? I think the football gods finally smiled on us. He should be nicknamed "the bee" or something like that for the way he is buzzing about everywhere: great energy, technique and absolute top-class awareness of his teammates' whereabouts. World class potential right here.

Downing 7.0. Smart, composed, professional performance from Stu. His goal turned the game around. I liked how he played when we defended the 3:2 lead too.

Suarez 7.5. Typical performance from him: a great goal and a bit of controversy. But for me maybe the most important quality about Suarez is that he never gives up. He loves winning and even more than that, he hates losing. It can't be overstated how important it is to have such character on a team. If he is not playing for any reason, I think we will miss his attitude and character even more than his skill.

Sturridge 5.5. I think he was either rusty or too "pumped" for the game. His awareness and link-up with Suarez were still there, he just made wrong decisions a lot. After Downing's equalizer I thought he kind of relaxed a bit and let his instincts dictate his decisions more and made some nice contributions.

Subs:
Allen 6.5. All of us hated the substitution at the moment it happened, but Allen actually did pretty well. He even won a few physical challenges, which was surprising given the news about his shoulder injury and possible surgery. I wouldn't say it was necessarily his introduction that changed the game for us (it was more a case of Spurs's defensive mistakes that let us back in), but as the game changed he performed his role nicely, bar one atrocious pass.

Generous on Lucas but other than that spot on. I too would be tempted to give MOM to Downing but Suarez edges it.

I'm very happy with Downing at the moment. He may not be the best player going forward but he is a good player to have if the team is doing well in that department anyway.

e. Oh and harsh on Enrique

Gerrard was MOM for me. Don't think we played particularly well but a win is a win. Sturridge stunk and was lazy to boot. Need to sort that out or the crowd will be on his back soon enough (as a few were today). Lucas wasn't great either.

Credit to Allen when he came on, I thought he was excellent. More please Joe.

Lucas probably deserves a +1 from everyone for his speed and gentle persuasion of the referee for the penalty, it was almost like he'd been playing at man u for years

Sturride looked a bit off pace at times, and you could see he's been out injured.
Still, a goal against Soton or Villa and he'll be the quickest player ever to score 5 goals in the league for us.
Its been a excellent start for him.

Johnson and Lucas were a bit below par, but all in all a top team performance.

Johnson's defending was poor today, and Carragher got caught under the ball alot. Enrique was indecisive and let them break too many times by ball watching, while Agger had a decent game but fannied around instead of closing down for the second goal. Once again we just weren't imposing enough, we allowed ourselves to be outpowered, despite largely being the more decisive attacking side. Lucas' passing was terrible too, some really really naive moments.

On the plus side, Suarez won it for us despite being largely below par by his standards, what he did do was wind up a couple of their players and they lost their cool, culminating in the 2nd and 3rd goals. Downing and Suarez both ran their socks off for the cause, Gerrard was quiet until the 2nd goal and then he went on the ascendancy and started getting a foothold on the game (maybe Hendo and Allen helped in this respect).

So overall, a hard fought win against a very good side, a spell in the match where we were reminded just exactly where our frailties lie, but overall, we always looked a threat and, as it is at the moment, we look like we've got goals in us, we worried less about the opposition (which is refreshing after Ged/Rafa) and just took the simple philosophy of "we'll score one more than you". It can be a naive tactic at times, and it took a reshuffle that made us more solid in the middle, but by and large we took it to them and then identified our own weak spots and shored it up and tried to just sucker punch them. A stroke of luck in many respects but sometimes you make your own luck by keeping on working hard and knocking at the door.

Hopefully this is a milestone and we don't go the other way in what is two relatively easy away games (on paper).

They're not easy though mate, both teams are fighting relegation.

Downing impressed me today. Didnt hide and ran his socks off.
First loss in 13 games for Spurs. It was a veeeery good win today.

You'll have to raise it further as you've named him your mom 😉

Yes, on the balance he was MOM, no doubt. I gave Coutinho 8 for first half, but 6 for 2nd, so that places Suarez ahead of him over the 90 minutes.

Johnson's a hard player to summarise. For the most part he's a fine player and contrary to a lot of opinions, a very decent defender. But he does switch off too often throughout the course of the season. It's clearly a mental thing, because when he's concentrating he's constantly doing the right thing and knows exactly where to be.

Definitely has to work on his marking from set-pieces and crosses. I think we're starting to be targeted with the long cross from the right flank.

I love Carra and thought he had a decent game. But we saw today that we really need a physical presence at the back.
Its the most important signing in years and we have to get it right. Hopefully the good trend (Studge/Coutinho) will continue in the summer window.

I never really bother with the ratings but here are my thoughts.

- Jones scared me anytime the ball was rolled back to him. I don't what it is but he simply does not inspire confidence. Hurry back Pepe.

- Gerrard was my MOTM. Bossed the game for large parts, clattered Bale when he had the chance and scored the winning penalty. Nice little through ball to get Suarez in on goal in the first half.

- Loving Downing lately. I'm actually, dare I say it, excited when he picks up the ball. Driving at the full back, cutting in, taking shots, tracking back and scoring a goal. Well done Stu. I thought he had fucked up his chance and there was a huge sigh of relief when I heard the crowd roar telling me it was in.

- Coutinho is a star in the making. He can step inside a player with a quick feint and ghost past them. Always looking for the clever slide rule pass which encourages our strikers to make positive runs. Has a nice understanding with Enrique already. He has the flair, ambition and guile to turn himself into a fan's favourite. He wasn't going to get any change out of Walker and he did well to use his natural ability to buy space and time. Fitness will be issue. I read an interview with Veron on coping in different leagues. He said Serie A teams train differently and build fitness at different intervals than teams in the premiership. I'll try dig up the interview as he underlined the problems players coming from Italy face.

- Suarez was the main attraction as per usual. Scored a clever goal after a darting run. He got very tired towards the end during his left wing shift and drifted out of the game. 21 goals, still top of the pile. Parker had his usual go at him and vise versa. Thankfully it didn't spill into anything serious.

- Sturridge played in spurts. He pissed me off when he threw his hands in the air instead of trying to chase the defender. The crowd let him know this too. Still want more of an effort from him but he is definitely a threat pulling off the shoulder of the defender. Very direct, pacy and can make something happen. Still very happy with him.

- On a side note, Henderson is turning himself into a tank. Fair play to him. He is doing whatever he can to turn himself into a very good footballer. He has everything going for him. Size, energy, desire, age, intelligence on the ball etc. We would be stupid to consider selling him in the summer.

- Joe Allen little cameo was good. Intelligent as ever on the ball, moved it quickly and effectively. Positive running and willingness to link up play. I think he is a great player and he will get the time to prove it.

I agree with this, I just wanted to add that I was also impressed with his tracking back

Not sure if I agree completely with the Gerrard thing, I think he lead the team really well when we were losing, but until Allen came on we were being completely out-bossed in the middle. Stevie is not getting any younger and needs someone that brings more to the table , and/ or is much more dynamic than Lucas, or Lucas needs something more akin to a young Stevie, but as it is now it don't work really well, particularly when we meet a top team, like we did today.
Regards

Y'see I am not historically a massive Glenjo fan, I have always said, quite reasonably that he isn't the greatest defender in the world but when he is good going forward, that shortcoming is well outweighed.
This season I would say he has been fantastic and excellent defensively , there have been a few stutters in the last few weeks with some of his distribution, but to be critical of him currently is very harsh
