Sakho

Indeed he was, but considering he's a 20 year old CM, I don't mind affording him some time, on the whole I think he has been brilliant in the back three since he's started playing there.

He certainly has seemed to understand the role very well.

He's nothing like Traore. Sakho actually has got decent technique and has very good passing ability.
His gangly style when in possession shouldn't take that away from him, it actually means nothing.

He's nothing even close to Traore. I've never seen Traore do a crossfield pass like Sakho did last night. Easily our best defender and he is good on the ball....just doesn't look it.

I was reading a post about him somewhere else and somebody drscribed sakho as ' djimi traore on roids' . Like traore, Sakho looks like he could mess up on any given play.

Except he doesn't does he.
Considering Markovic is being played as wing back in front of him and offers negligable cover ( not his fault out of his position ) he's doing great, and his passing is also sharp and forward.

That was a 50 yard laser ! Had that been Gerrard, Henderson or even Lucas everyone (esp Modo) would be creaming themselves. It seems it's hardly worthy of a mention (or maybe everyone is still in shock) because it was Sakho. I was like woooooooah !

Yep, I'd continue to play Sakho. If we persist with three at the back, it's Sakho, Skrtel and one other in my opinion.

Do any of the so called pundits on tv and the radio actually watch the game, none of them fancy him and most are quite critical, especially of his passing which is really good imho. They seem like a herd of sheep with the inability to work out an opinion of their own, and just follow the herd.

Yep, pisses me off no end.

"we know he's not comfortable with the ball at his feet"

"he's an accident waiting to happen"

Yet he continually takes the piss with the ball at his feet & plays some brilliant long balls you don't expect from a defender.

But he looks awkward, so, you know, he must be shite.

It goes back to the idea that the best people to talk about football are former or current footballers; never mind that as has been demonstrated recently, they often have to phone their other halves up to ask them how to make a cup of instant coffee. That's the calibre of pundit in the mainstream these days.

He made a couple of mistakes last night that could have gone pear shaped. I agree some of it gets exaggerated, but he'll come up against a top forward sooner or later and get made to look like a chump. Being able to put his foot on the ball and pick a pass, or blag his way out of trouble is one thing, doing it when he gets put under pressure is another. It'll happen.

And let's cut out the snide digs like "he looks awkward, so he must be shite", they don't go hand in hand. No one is denying he is a good defender who makes some great interceptions, he is, his passing can be excellent too, again no denying that at all. But if you think his awkwardness and odd posture is going to hold up in every game, against all opposition, then I think you're asking a bit much, it's an accident waiting to happen and it's not a "baseless assumption" or whatever shite keeps getting posted. You don't have to be a genius or a retarded pundit to realise he's got fuck ups in him, he's making them in most games, but at the minute he's getting away with it.

I thought Danny Murphy was particularly critical last night. I mean, fair enough, if you've had a falling out with a previous club, you'll find reason to be critical. But he was a disgrace last night. He took every opportunity possible to get a dig in with some snide remark. And not just Sakho either.

Sorry Mark but you only have to turn the telly on or listen to the radio to hear plenty of people saying he's shite, just look in this thread for example.
Show me a defender who doesn't make the odd fuck up. Not having a go at you but it feels as if there's a lot of people just waiting for one so they can say look isn't he crap!

A few people I know think he's shite and I know it's down to how awkward he looks. If you actually watch how he plays and take his gait and technique out of the equation, and compare him to our other defenders, he's a good player. Sakho is our best defender.

Gonna have to disagree for once, mate. The "He looks awkward (etc.)" bit is IMHO a good summary of the penny-in-the-slot assumptions which too often take the place of proper observation and analysis where Sakho is concerned, the kind of thing against which you and I have stood out in Skittles' case before now. Few (if any) defenders hold up in every game against all opposition, and I'm afraid I don't believe there's adequate evidence to suggest Sakho will be any more prone to foul-ups than others are.

That's the point we've all been making, people keep assuming he's going to make loads of mistakes due to his awkwardness, but thats rubbish, he's made mistakes, and will make more mistakes, but thats just part of being a defender. More importantly, he's making less than Skrtel, Lovren and Toure and generally looking much more solid in defense, but because Sakho's a little awkward in posture he gets treated as if he makes many more, I don't get it.

Well people did the same with Agger and Skrtel, the latter being less elegant, ergo, he makes more mistakes. I just think, and nothing to do with his gait or any of that bollocks, that a few of these moments where he's just about got away with it, will eventually culminate in him not getting away with it and him getting found out a touch. You could see more in the second half, they were closing him quicker and forcing errors, he gifted them possession a couple of times as a result.

That happens to even the best defenders in the world, sometimes too because they play as a unit it's the unit not the individual that fails. How ever I guess the measure is how often. The answer with Sakho is .. not often.

Our other defenders have been repeatedly making mistakes all season that cost us, but you're pulling up the one who looks like he might make mistakes against better teams?

No I'm not, for fucks sake. Do me a favour, forget that you don't rate Skrtel, forget this notion that I don't rate Sakho. I'm saying that these criticisms aren't baseless, they aren't unfounded and the "concerns" aren't unfair, it's got nothing to do with who I think is the best defender or who's made the most mistakes. I think Lovren's been a joke this season, why does that have to have ANY bearing on what I think of Sakho? It doesn't. It's the like the whole Agger/Skrtel, Lallana/Coutinho thing all over again, you can't love one without hating the other, and vice versa, it's stupid.

Lovren's made loads of mistakes, Skrtel has made a few, Moreno has made a few, Sakho looks like an accident waiting to happen. Is that clear enough? I think they're all culpable or not quite good enough in some way, it's not about deflecting criticism from other players, it's telling it as I see it.

Jack: quite. I actually reckon that sorting out our defensive coaching will be as important as any signing we might make in this window, or indeed the next. While I want Rodgers to stay and succeed, the owners need to put him firmly on the spot over this.

Of course this is crucial and it's the stubborn flaw that Rodgers needs to get over fast, otherwise he's falling into the same traps as his predecessors, letting his ego and determination to prove people wrong, dictate his thinking.
