He was excellent was big Per the past 18 months - the 5-1 drubbing at Anfield was the first loss those two had when playing together in 20+ matches I think. They are an excellent partnership - but as you said, the partner made him.

Yea the talent is definitely there with him, there must be some center backs that really respond to a consistent leader type beside them.

I can see he has potential to improve. But he hasn't been good so far, he's an 18 million pound "marquee" signing who's been our 3rd best centre back in a leaky defence.

And if one more person tells me how great he is in the air

Forget the stats for a second. I remember seeing a player that gets involved in a lot of scraps. And can put another player off even without winning the header. He's usually guarding the other teams best aerial threat. I think he is better in the air than stats tell us. I think he is having a positive outcome on more than 56% of aerial duels. I figured I would need to present some statistical evidence for some to analyze:

However, I do think that we were worse in defense this year when Mamadou was playing. I put that down to the language barrier. This year I hope his English is better and he has a more settled preseason. I would persist with him as he is mightily talented.

Martin Skrtel had a phenomenal year all around. Skrtel + 1? Or are we going to buy Dejan to speak french to Sakho?

Read again mate....he said hyypia made everyone who played next to him look better..he didn't say they were good defenders

Djimi looked 'good'? Josemi looked 'good'? No disrespect to Sami Hyypia - I love him and a Liverpool legend - but he's not God.

He has been a total liability at times but he's also one of the few defenders I've seen completely own Messi. Maybe he's a bit of a Henchoz, put him beside a good partner and he'll shine.

He didn't own Messi at all despite the biased commentators during the game jizzing their pants over him (and Arsenal).

But for poor finishing Messi could've scored about 4.

When you talk about a player playing next to a CB you usually mean his partner. So first off I wasnt talking about fullbacks but still pwnage

I'm sure you understand the meaning of the word better mate...are you being obtuse just so you can disagree with Modo?

Hyypia is a proper legend and one of the few world class player we had back in the day. Traore played his best football when he played for LFC so his example doesn't disprove that Hyypia made anyone who played with him look better. We are not saying Traore played like Bekenbauer or Baresi here, he played better than he normally does.

Anyway....speaking of that CL, the contribution of Hyypia is often overlooked.

In that squad if we replaced Gerrard with any great football player we probably would not have won the cup and like wise we probably would not have won it if we replaced Hyypia with anyone else as well.

The match I watched he was excellent in, maybe not over 2 legs, plenty of match reports and articles thought so too.

Having just contained the likes of Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro in an outstanding performance against arguably the best team in World Football Barcelona, Laurent Koscienly has just baked an alarmingly big humble pie.

For a player who isnt "good" or comfortable in possession according to some on this forum, he certainly looked it last night.
Even though it was Honduras.

96% passing accuracy is the highest registered so far in the WC.

Hope he continues to be boss and then is ready for a new season.

Sakho can look clumsy when running and/or passing, and this makes him vulnerable to the kind of superficial "judgment by momentary impression" which you get everywhere on the Net, and too often among football fans generally. Personally I couldn't give two shiny sh!tes whether he glides over the ground or ploughs it up with a JCB as long as he does the needful in the end, and those stats - not for the first time - indicate that he does.
