Sometimes I think people base their knowledge on players by playing FIFA. Back in the day (As some of the old schoolers will know) it was all about Champ Manager. I suppose these learned souls could be huge students of the game though and religiously watch every match going - In which case fair play. I wonder though.....

Downing is very good in both Fifa and Football manager.
 
His passing ability is underestimated and shit hot - always hits the target at a good lick. His running style predjudices peoples opinion imho. Young player in new very different league did well afaic
 
I dont understand why people keep saying he is good in the air. Skittles and even Agger have better stats. In addition he sits way too deep and is the least dominant defender we have.
 
In fact, Rodgers has dropped him at least twice for being shit. Both times, Agger has been brought back into the team (he's only been dropped due to injury). Skittles and another will be our starting centre backs next season

You seem to forget that time Agger was so terrible, he was subbed off for Kolo.
 
They'll all get their chance to shine next year - as had been said - they all have flaws and none quite look like the dominant defensive maestro we need.

He also didnt have a pre season and was injured for 3 months during the season.
He'll be much better and more dominant next season after a year of settling in. He didnt speak much English which as a defender isnt great.

Varane is a top prospect who recently played the whole 120 mins at the heart of the Real Madrid defence in a Champions league final.

Koscielny is widely regarded as a top quality premiership cb

Mangala has been quoted at 30m + after both City and Chelsea have made recent edits to sign him. Top player.

Rami is solid, no more.

Sakho starting for France at cb is a big statement about his perceived quality given the competition for places in defence in their squad.

What an odd statement to make, has anyone from their management said they rate the other two any higher?

The last couple of seasons where he's been in and out the PSG side has probably knocked him down a peg at International level, and he's had injury and competition to deal with here in his first season. I know this probably stems from an Agger vs every other centre back mentality, but it's hilarious that you have to hate every other Liverpool player that plays in his position. Carragher, Skrtel, Sakho.... I'm sure you'll love Illori though, what with him having that defensive essential of being elegant looking on the ball.

I can see he has potential to improve. But he hasn't been good so far, he's an 18 million pound "marquee" signing who's been our 3rd best centre back in a leaky defence.

And if one more person tells me how great he is in the air

I didn't really forget that.........it's more like I was taking about Sakho and that fact had zero relevance to the point I was making.

He is good on one v ones on the ground. If people called him a beast based solely on that it could be justified.

But people continue to say he's good in the air despite the fact he hasn't shown any evidence of even being above average. Not only does he not win many, I think he's timid in the air, in that he will not go for headers that Skrtel (and even Agger, despite being derided on here about his ability in the air) would win easily.

I also can't understand how people don't seem to notice this, or choose to ignore it. Even @dmishra has complemented his heading ability already in this thread (and he's normally a fairly good judge of a player).

He's very good in the air. The lack of dominance this season is imho down to being new to the league, no pre season and 3 months injured. Vidic looked the same for the first 6 months.

Sakho will be excellent for us next year.

He has been a total liability at times but he's also one of the few defenders I've seen completely own Messi. Maybe he's a bit of a Henchoz, put him beside a good partner and he'll shine.

He was excellent was big Per the past 18 months - the 5-1 drubbing at Anfield was the first loss those two had when playing together in 20+ matches I think. They are an excellent partnership - but as you said, the partner made him.
