What is it though specifically with Utd players and their poor conditioning?

Anderson was deemed overweight
Shaw was deemed overweight.
Sancho was deemed overweight
Rooney is naturally overweight.
Casemiro?

Here we go…

If our medical team think the injury isn’t serious, it’s likely he came close to losing a leg and we can expect his home debut sometime in February if we’re lucky.

Watched the Utd - Arsenal game last night. Utd win 2-0 and in terms of their new signings:

Timber. Not really a right back is he? Very good in possession but pretty poor positioning and not the best defender. Struggled.

Rice. A mate of mine pointed out how Rice struggles in possession and looks a bit lost when he has played for England (possession based team compared to West Ham). Have to say I saw the same yesterday. Great at winning the ball back but look pretty lost with it and struggles to position himself when Arsenal attack. A bit meh last night.

Havertz. Fucking hell. Playing as an 8. So few touches, anonymous and just not a good performance. Same story as for Chelsea. Wonder what the plan is for him because last night it wasnt working.

Mount. Anonymous and not much of a contribution. One of those players that look dead busy but no end product. Happy we didnt pay 60 mill and 250k a week for that.

The hyped-up description in the media is “… all action , all pressing…”

Let's be fair. They're still adjusting to new surroundings.

Not a fan of these long-haul pre-season trips. Apologies to those of you living out in the Far East / Oz, I know it's the only chance etc etc.
BUT:
In the Klopp era, we've been to the Far East twice on pre-season. The following seasons, we finished 8th (2015-16) and 5th (last season). The only times we didn't get Champions League under Klopp.
Admittedly, 2015-16 was his first season, transition in the squad, and we did make the Europa League final.
But I'd really prefer that we stayed closer to home and reduced the hours in the air, increased the time on the training ground and avoided the jet-lag (I'm guessing Dele Alli wasn't exaggerating the issues around sleeping tablet use in the game).
It looks like Klopp has resisted long-haul during his time here so I'm guessing he feels the same.
Be good if we could just send the kids, but there's usually contractual obligations to take strong teams.

Agreed. Totally mental (apart from a commercial / financial perspective) to be travelling through time zones and radically different climates as a preparation for a springboard into premier league games. We always tend to suffer for it.

I completely respect your point but for a person like me, the games I attended during the pre-season visit to US ranks among the top, top events of my life. Whenever I think of giving up on football, I look at the pics of those two games and remember how I felt, and I am back.

With so many things competing for people's attention, it is critical that personal touch is maintained and that happens only during tours. With the center of gravity of marketing money shifting away from Europe where the main new eyeballs are, it is even more important.

The problem is that the football calendar is so stacked with so many competitions that there is no time for a proper break and pre-season. Ideally the competitive football ends up May 10th-15th with the CL final and there is time for players to take a break and then go on a relaxing pre-season tour end of June and PL starts in August.

Watching the interview with Klopp right now and he singled out four youth/reserve players:
Bradley
Frauendorf
Doak
Clark

Yeah, I totally get the experience side of things. And we've managed trips to the US and had good seasons afterwards, but the extra travel to the other side of the world just seems to throw out our preparation. We were not fit enough at the start of last season and never really caught up.
Hopefully this year bucks the trend. Personally, I'd like to see the international friendlies post season in the non-WC or Euros years being canned and clubs doing post-season games in the Far East to reach the fans but without affecting pre-season preparation
I believe we are somewhat obliged contractually to go to Asia because it's a key market for Standard Chartered.
I would say again, these tours are nowhere near as profitable as we are led to believe - travel and accommodation costs kill the profit margin, so even the commercial argument isn't that strong without the Standard Chartered angle for is.

I agree to an extent - but given a large part of our squad jet off to all parts of the world for internationals during the season and are back playing within days I think the impact of long haul pre-seasons is sometimes inflated.

If it’s scheduled right, ie we get time after the trip to rest and we’re not bouncing around different countries every couple of days then I think it can be good.

Last season wasn’t ideal preparation - and bouncing around play games all over SE Asia wouldn’t be ideal - but being based in and playing a couple of games in Singapore feels more sensible.

I’d be more worried about training facilities and pitches being up to scratch than the travel. Singapore should be fine in that respect.
