Slot-ball

Interesting thing about Slot is that he sometimes makes multiple tactical/positional adjustments in a game without making substitutions. We saw it most strikingly against Fulham when he tried something, it didn’t work, tried another tactic and then settled on 3rd that finally allowed us to dominate.

When something doesn’t quite work to his liking, it takes him about 5 minutes to recognize it, make a decision on how to change and communicate it to players. This is modern coaching - gone are the days when a manager would watch and suffer through 45 minutes of shite before making any changes - now it’s a lot faster and more seamless. And it’s a huge advantage against teams who are not flexible/versatile/well-coached enough to be able to make these kinds of micro-adjustments mid-game.

This is like racing Formula 1 and your car is far more responsive and nimble than most opponents - in the end that may matter more than pure speed.

I LOVE the speed of Slot's tactical brain and the adjustments he makes. He won't get it right every time but it's great that he recognises the issues and immediately tries to rectify them.

Have to say this has been a genuinely good process of searching for a new manager - no panic, not asking Klopp to appoint his successor like United did with Fergie, just trusting their judement and process and the result so far has been brilliant.
Whatever you do don't tell Binomial that his 'most hated man on the planet' is actually really really good given time.

The thing is, even when he gets it wrong or the opposition manager surprises him (as happened a few times already), it can all be corrected in real time! So all oppositon manager gets for his sleepless nights of drafting a perfect plan is maybe a 5-10 minute period where we’re under the cosh - if they don’t manage to inflict major damage during that period, you know Slot will wriggle out of it.

By contrast, when OUR plan works, we usually manage to convert it into a concrete advantage and don’t let go until we’re comfortably ahead. This speedy tactical adaptibility and flexibility is a real cheat code for this team. It was already going in this direction under Klopp, but I think Slot took it to a new level.

What's even more impressive is that Slot is doing all this with a team he hasn't built.

I think he's the best tactician we've had since Rafa.

It’s not as if he could get more angry.
Do you want to bet ?!

Well said. Honestly, this is as good as it gets with owners. I really do respect FSG and their process. I do think they could splash the cash a bit but they really have effectively used data analytics and the usual traditional approaches well. It helps to retain knowledge within an org. Look at the FSG board, and even staff. Lots of continuity, with their strong performers.

We all have players or managers or in this case sporting directors we have a beef with.

For me it was Lazy Harry Kewell, who cost us the 2007 champions league (walking around, not tracking back)

This may have slipped under the radar.

But ever since this was posted our form has begun to stutter.

Obv not alarm bells yet but just saying…
Alternatively since this got posted you could say;

City have fallen even further into a hole.
Arsenal have dropped points and lost their best player for a considerable amount of time.
Man Utd have somehow gotten worse.
Everton have taken points off our direct rivals
Diaz and Dom has rediscovered their best form.
We have progressed into the semi final of the league cup
We are top at Xmas baby!

Uh oh.

One caveat though. We wouldn't have had four players in and around the box at the same time on a counter.
I think it would be pretty rare to see a midfielder like Szobo so high up the pitch.
Swap him for Firmino and Mane for Diaz and yeah that would be a Klopp goal. But Gini and Hendo would be at the halfway line.
Szobo was our Firmino yesterday!

Szoboszlai playing a more advanced and impactful role seemed to allow Díaz to play his natural game, even in a central position, resulting in one of his best performances in that role for some time. Szoboszlai's physicality and ability to break forward gave us an extra man in advanced areas, creating more space for Díaz and Salah to thrive.

This game highlighted that if we want to use Díaz centrally, having Szoboszlai in a more advanced role is crucial. Now, not every opponent will give us as much space, so it won’t always work, but simply deploying Díaz up front without the necessary support around him tends to be ineffective. The same principle applies to Jota, to an extent. While he has more experience playing centrally and a better awareness of space, his smaller size means he isn’t as effective in consistently winning duels and getting Szobo closer to him will no doubt be helpful. It will mean that Mac Allister has to hold more with Grav, but he's plenty good enough and experienced enough to do that.

If we're starting Nunez then there's less need for physical support around him, but greater technical ability. I've always felt him and Jones play some tidy combinations. Jones is better at spotting the ball in behind but also he's less clunky on the ball than Szobo, which goes someway to offsetting whatever planet Nunez is on that day and keep the system functioning.

Szobo said in his interview he just hit and hope for this goal.

I think he needs to improve on his finishing. He had some easy chances in the past which he did not take.
Yeah. noticed that in game. Anything between GKs legs always makes me wonder whether it was the perfect finish or was he going to keep the keeper when he should be putting it either side. Feels like best finishers never put it through Keeper's legs.

Not true, I’ve seen Raul, Inzaghi or our own Jota finish that way. It can be very effective at close range.

Not saying they don’t but how many of their finishes was between the keepers legs? Szbo seems to find the keeper a lot and hopefully something he can work on. Just something I noticed but don’t have the stats on it

2018/2019 were by far the worst years of my life, and i remembered we were 10 points clear off everyone else, and i thought if we win the league, that would bring a bit of joy during some very dark years. Some of the football we played was absolutely scintillating.

But we still managed to lose somehow. Granted, the CL more than made up for that disappointment but it was still a downer. The league was the one that really mattered.

Slot and Salah's right. We haven't won anything and we need to stay humble.

Optimistic, hopeful but humble.
