New midfielder?

Balotelli can win matches for us single handedly

Been a while since Gerrard has done that

I'll be surprised if Mario contributes more for the team than Gerrard did for the 2nd half of last season.

And you can't exactly blame Gerrard for not winning games singlehandedly when he's playing as a DM nowadays.

Read today in the Evening Standard that Song wants £5M/Year after tax, and apparently that works out at £9.8Mil per year.

Fucking Hell.

Both options aren't good enough to start

And if they're not good enough to start I wouldn't love it!

This. So this.

I wouldnt want Xabi to come back because it would be heartbreaking to see them and realise (not for the first time) they dont work together in a midfield.

If that's true, Song isn't worth it. And neither is Kheidera for that matter if he's asking for mad money.

I think it might be worth waiting another season and seeing where we're at with the likes of Allen and Can before finally deciding how we go about replacing Gerrard.

the rumors of Eto are back - in addition to Mario.

Sources like Metro are the ones saying it so how knows?

his apostrophe is part of the hold up, as the punctuation mark is looking for a regular spot on the website,

Milan Badelj is in the final year of his contract at Hamburg, and Sevilla are looking to sign him for 4 million.

Would be the ideal signing. Cheap, young, talented and an absolute professional.

Balotellli AND Eto'o? The interwebs will explode.

Add Xabi and it's the end of the world.

Just saying. I'm not too fussed by Eto'o joining but suddenly we'd be loaded with options.

Wrong thread dude.

Have we signed Ronaldinho yet?

There's also Rossiter to consider. Virtually everyone expects him to make it sooner or later, and IMO he looks best in that role Gerrard's been playing. He'll be 18 in March, so it's not like he's a million miles away.

Not a million miles.... but probably at least 4 years from being a playmaker/DM.

Less that that I'd have thought. His maturity is probably his biggest strength. The main thing we're waiting on is his physique, but that looks much-improved from last season. A couple of years and he should be ready, provided his game develops as expected.

Fair enough - I don't watch the reserves, so I haven't seen him.

I'd have thought, however, that physicality is only part of the issue. The Gerrard role is fundamental to the team requiring the discipline & tactical awareness to be able to hold the position, defend & snuff out key opposition players operating behind forwards. Allied to this is the ability to move the ball quickly & intelligently through the midfield and pick out long passes to put forward line.

Gerrard struggles with the defensive side & Lucas with the attacking side - so if young Rossiter can offer both at a very early age then fair play.

I think it's a position more suited to a more experienced player.

Maybe Rossiter is more likely to play in a more advanced position, maybe beside Henderson (the 2 Jordans)?

You're right, but Rossiter is exceptional in his maturity and in playing that postion. He's more disciplined in that role at 17 than Gerrard is at 34. All game long he's directing play, moving the ball quickly and precisely, holding his position perfectly, talking to his teammates. He's a born captain.

According to that legendary thread in which Spider Neil chased his tail in describing the best physical shape for a holding midfielder it was decided that a slight frame was actually appropriate to the position. As Brendan articulated at the time, "C-3PO has certainly got the right slender build for a holding player, he's like a camp, gold Didi Hamann".

In other words, Rossiter is ready.

Again, I'll defer to your greater knowledge - as I've never seen him play.

However - I fancy that there's a world of difference between showing it at youth & reserve level and actually performing that roll consistently at the highest level against top quality teams.

I've been struggling to think of a player under the age of, say 22, that come in to a top team and nailed the particular position Gerrard is now occupying.
