Dreambeliever

Will he believe again?

Anyone have any interest in the fact he’s tearing up the MLS?

Have to admit I have found myself watching highlights with interest.

I wonder if he can have a significant impact on the next generation in the USA.

He has probably signed Merch deals worth hundreds of millions already

No,
Nobody cares about the MLS, who would want to go from seeing the Messi Barca and Argentina to the Messi of now? What were you missing then you’re seeing now? Nothing.

I enjoy watching him play on easy mode and toy with MLS defenders. It’s like they’ve never had to track a person who knew how to make clever runs.

His effect on the MLS has been seismic. The interest in the games he plays has skyrocketed. The minimum priced MLS tickets for the games in which he plays is around 300-500 US dollars now. It will significantly increase the MLS profile. But not sure if it is enough to make a dent.

US has a very strong sports culture with NFL, NBA, MLB in different seasons. Then there is college football, NHL, March madness and college basketball, and depending on which part of the country you live in college baseball also. While the number of kids playing soccer at school level has increased consistently, it is very difficult to penetrate the robust sports market in US. If you like sports and live in the US, there is a wide array of existing sports available to you throughout the year, and often you have a family, friends group with whom you watch or follow. Not sure even Messi can make a dent there.

That’s all true. But Americans desperately love winners, and Messi is a winner of the highest order. They will watch him as long as he plays. Then when he leaves or retires, they will stop watching.

He'll bring the league to another level. Football, baseball, basketball have nothing to worry about but the NHL should be looking over its shoulder a bit.

If Beckham and Zlatan, with washed up versions of Henry, Rooney and Gerrard could take MLS forward as much as they have, Messi will move the needle more. In conjunction with the increased collaboration with Liga MX, MLS will continue to grow

Ronaldo will be livid if more people start watching MLS that the Saudi Pro League.

He needs a good rival. Too bad Ronaldo didn’t go to LA or something.

I’ve watched this goal on repeat. So satisfying how he delays making the run until the very last moment and half a second later he’s in front of goal alone. You could say the defending was bad (and it was), but Barca at their peak used to score a lot of these types of goals - seemingly simple and unstoppable.

This generations Pele before it all goes quiet again.

They need a home grown superstar for football to really take flight.

Ah lads, the MLS has really improved. Something like over 63% of players are from outside US/Canada these days. And you can see it in how they play. Many are coming from South America like Almiron who came through Atlanta FC.

Quality is not always Premier league of course, but it's decent on the eye. I take my son to see games, and it's a terrific atmosphere, stadium always sold out.

Coaching quality is waaaay up as well. The MLS final last year was a cracker too

International football is here to stay and has become a big part of many households. And viewing figures for the game are up as well.

And then the World Cup is coming again shortly as well.

Messi will simply raise that tide a little more. He's just another variable to help the game grow. A big one at that

Great goal. Really love the weight and timing of the floater ball in. For a team that hasn’t played much together this goal shows some really good understanding between them.

Disgusted by this thread
Yeah I'm kinda disappointed. Sure he's not a LFC player but I kinda respect greatness. Haven't followed the MLS live but I've checked the highlights. He's on fire over there.

Haha, I thought the exact opposite. Messi, MLS and the dumb American way of looking at football can get to fuck

Have to agree with all the points being raised here. The quality on the whole is growing. Lot of decent young players from South America now moving to MLS. Thiago Almeida can be the next big move from MLS to Europe. Outside of Messi, Inter Miami has signed a couple of young, talented Argentinian players and more are expected to move.

It is always fun, excellent atmosphere and overall a great place to spend an afternoon and evening with the family. The MLS has done an outstanding job on that aspect. Having a lot of games in summer, in new stadiums which have the right capacity (not too big, not too small), helps.

I attended a Toronto FC game a few years back and it was cracking fun. The quality is nowhere near the top European leagues but improves year on year.

I'm thrilled to see the league succeed and Messi's presence helps that and is fun along the way.
