isn't one of the 10 rules of sabremetics to always accept when someone offers you more than what you think the player is worth?

I was going to say, even the cuntiest of the above (so Gay waiter/The special needs one) don't deserve the treatment Thatcher dished out on Mendes.

Fuck him, the treacherous piece of shit. I do hope his career from this point is a complete and utter disaster.

Sorry, I should say - He was actually Chelsea's third choice after Modric and Pereira.

WELCOME TO LONDON RAUL!

I know, but a harsh one to say the least.

Just thinking of that 'tackle' makes me cringe.

What does it matter to us that he was third choice? I suppose it makes us feel a bit better that he wasn't their top target but those clubs got to keep one of their better player. We lost a good player for a similar fee we paid for him. Also didn't Chelsea offer about 30mil for Modric and 25 million for Pereira?? We got 12 for Raul. He might be older of the three but he had a cracking first season and they took a player from their rivals. I still think we're the losers in this situation.

Yep. We've strengthened a rival and lost a very good player for a very similar fee that we paid last year. His movement is fantastic and he was instrumental in picking up 3 points at the Emirates. He links up really well with Suarez and Kuyt too who are the best two strikers at the club. This is a bad piece of business.

Just a bit baffled by the situation really. Not the same as Alonso situation but see slight similarities.

Excelled under Kenny, played well in his debut season at new club and new league. For some reason, was 'unwanted' and seemingly went out of favour in such a short space of time. Even if the rumours of him pushing for a better contract than the one he got under the previous regime, this looks more like a financial decision than footballing one.

Was he only on 30k? Must have been annoying to watch Henderson stroll in on double money and take his place.

Posted this in the Transfer thread but more relevant here.

Oh FUCK FUCK FUCK !

I went to bed all happy with the world - we had signed Bellamy, a far more useful and effective player in our team than N'Gog and Meireles was staying so we had a superb choice of quality midfielders and having shifted ALL of our considerable amount of deadwood (and the massive saving in salaries) this was one of our best transfer windows ever .... and wake up to find Meireles has gone !

IMO this is a far better move for Chelsea that for us (although no doubt the owners felt, reasonably enough, that we needed to recoup some of the vast amounts of cash we've splashed over the past year) as Meireles will add considerably creative strength to their MF at a time when Lampard is aging and becoming less effective and Chelsea were beginning to look like they were struggling. If he had gone abroad I'd be unhappy but not distraught, but Chelsea !?!?

It would have been better if he'd fucked off to Italy or Spain but it's not the end of the world. I hope we buy another player like him in January though.

Thats why I dont get the 'greedy' suggestion; fact is he felt underpaid and wanted to leave, so he left. We've all done that.

The club paid Cole 3x as much a week just to scratch his balls.

We obviously didnt rate him, fair enough. I thought he was a good player and I'd rathe he stayed.

My only real quibble is the fee and that its fucking FUCKING Chelsea.

Obviously in an ideal world, it would be better to flog him to a foreign club. However, the likes of Inter (no midfield departures), Juve (spending spree), AC Milan (shrewd signings) who can afford such a fee have no need to bring him in whereas clubs in Spain are probably even worse off financially. Besides, from his point of view, he was 'let down' - he played a part in kick starting the revival, was down the pecking order out of a sudden - with his contributions seemingly wiped off. Having excelled in the league last season, from a personal point of view, why did he have to go through another change and unsettle his own career and family. Those reports claiming him to be on low wages and apparent assurance by the club to review after his 1st season also makes his discontent 'reasonable'.

That said, we obviously cant rule out the fact that (deep down) he wanted to make the move to a bigger club, with European football etc. but the after mentioned factors cant be ignored.

It'll be hilarious if he's completely shit for Chelsea.
Deja vu couldn't have been kinder to us if that happened !!

I didn't want to see him leaving, as he is a quality player.
However, if it was indeed his choice to leave us,there's not much we could do (though I suspect that Kenny didn't really want him to stay).
However, with the destination he chose, I can only wish him as much success as our last two players who left for the Chavs have enjoyed so far with their new club.

Thanks for the year you played for us, Raul.
And BTW, if they decide to loan you next year, we'll consider taking you back...

Not sure why we have to accept a transfer request. Not sure why we allow ourselves to be screwed. Not sure why we dont ask for top $. But if Kenny didnt fancy him, fair enough.

How has the last player who left us for chelsea done? Exactly.......Fuck Meireles.
Ming will do fine at Chelsea - not as well as he did with us but he'll do fine. He won't get as many games but he probably figures he's now at a club and playing for a manager who will keep their word.

I don't want the Chavs to have any success but I have no problems admiting that I feel a little bit of joy in seeing Ming stick it to the morons who thought they'd walk all over him. Just gutted that we, the fans, are the ones who have to suffer the actual loss.

I think Ming was a big element in some of the delightful football we played last year, and although he may not have had a defined position as such, nevertheless it's not to say he didn't have a role. I'm surprised Ryan didn't rate him, being as it was him that put forward the "fuck formations and defined positions, just have good creative players with good movement" theory.

Ming was, is, a good creative player with good movement. For all these people saying Kenny didn't fancy him I think this was based more on the off the pitch stuff than on - he's repeatedly made the point that if you don't wanna be here then fuck off, and the Raul rumours have been around a while.

In that sense, yes - it's good to get rid, you should want to play for the shirt.

However, if these contract rumours are true, and Raul's on 30K p/w, then we've been dicks to argue the toss over that - fuck whether it was a verbal contract or whatever, he was worth more money than that and that's all that matters. If it really was only 30K p/w we could have more than doubled it and he'd still only be getting paid what Jova was. Maybe it's the new regime saying "we don't give big contracts to old guys" but he's not that old and he's still got some life in him yet.

It's a bad move by us IMO and I'm not happy, but it is what it is

Yep I'm still raging. We've sold a quality player that everyone likes to a rival without making a worthwhile financial gain. What is it the equivalent of? Malouda going to united or to us or something?

Malouda has been critical to Chelsea winning the last few years - he's one of the best talents. Meirless, whom I liked, was going to struggle to get games it seems (be it because Kenny didn't like him, he didn't want to play, the $ issue, or whatever). It doesn't matter how WE rate him, he's a squad player in Kenny's eyes ...

Ok selling him is not the end of the world , I mean we played our best football of the last few yrs on Saturday and he wasn't involved ..... it's more the destination , timing and weakening of our overall squad and options that has pissed me off. We look just that little bit weaker without his name on the squad list and why the hell would you strenghten a rival ? .

I guess the major point is that Dalglish fancied others ahead of him but it's a pity he couldn't have been kept as a very strong squad member . To me this really looks like a balancing of the books sale and although a little bit of a kick in the nads , i can grimace and accept that I guess. I suspect Dalglish made a choice with his budget and this is how he has to balance it . Although i don't like the way the club are trying to distract from this by releasing a statement that he asked for a transfer request so now he takes all the blame . The fact is , we've been trying to sell him all summer and he's probably happy enough to go considering he's not first choice and we wouldn't increase his salary .
