I have to defend Rodgers a little bit here. Everyone who is now saying that "everyone knows Gerrard and Lucas should not play together," did you say the same thing after Arsenal game? When we played against a much stronger team than Leicester and the same 4 players – Lucas, Gerrard, Lallana and Coutinho – dominated the midfield? A few games ago everyone was piling up on Henderson, how he is such a mediocre and overrated player – now suddenly the public opinion turns and we should actually drop our captain and club legend to accommodate Hendo – and Rodgers is a moron and a failure for not doing so. Not so logical, is it?
Just like everyone here, I'm disappointed by our midfield's performance and yes, Gerrard was particularly culpable (although he wasn't the only one who was below par – but as captain he should lead by example and he didn't do that). For me this game is perhaps a final confirmation of Gerrard's unfortunate decline – the consistency is simply not there any more. But saying that Rodgers should have dropped Gerrard preemptively... I don't think there was an iron-clad case for it yet and given Gerrard stature, there had to be. Maybe after this announcement things will change. And no, his "failure to deal with Gerrard problem" is not going to be Brendan's downfall. I'm fairly sure his tenure of LFC manager would have ended a lot sooner had he been seen as the one trying to push Liverpool's best ever player out of the club.
