What do we think of Lambert joining? Surely he deserves his own thread with rumours of a medical this weekend.

I like him as person and player but I'm a bit Meh on the whole thing. I'm sure he'd drop his wages and run to Anfield if we gave hid the nod though.

Perhaps Brendan thinks Lambert can be our third striker and someone who is willing to come of the bench without causing any disharmony. Has anyone watched Lambert much this season? Is he a player who could come of the bench and perform? We need someone who can. Aspas and Borini strike me as players who need a run of games to get their confidence up to a certain level for them to be effective. United were spoiled with Javier Hernandez for a few seasons.

I like the sentimentality of this transfer but is that enough?

@JamesPearceEcho: Rickie Lambert to #LFC is on. Told the initial fee will be around £4m plus add-ons. Story on Echo site shortly.

I'd be disappointed if we're not aiming a bit higher than Lambert to be honest. We need at least three top quality strikers.

I like it, its something different for us, he'll suprise a few with how good he actually is, hes not in the England squad as some sort of token gesture, hes there on merit, good player.

Think he'd be a very good third striker to be honest, cant imagine we'd get much better willing to come in on low wages and sit on the bench a lot

Is he good enough to challenge Sturridge and Suarez for one of their places though? That's the kind of player we need.

He'll be better than Aspas..... But that isn't much of a compliment

Lambert has scored all 34 of his penalty kicks for Southampton. He has only missed two in his entire career, and the last one of those came for Bristol Rovers five years ago.

13 goals and 12 assists in 37 league appearances. (Involved in 45% of Southampton's league goals)

The season before, he had 15 goals and 7 assists from 38 appearances. (Involved in 44.8% of Southampton's league goals)

Lol miss out on the league by a whisper and we bring in ruddy lambert?!

For fucks sake

[article=http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/sep/20/brendan-rodgers-rickie-lambert-discarded]Brendan Rodgers believes Rickie Lambert's development into a full England international aged 31 shows that clubs are too quick to throw young British talent "to the garbage".

Lambert is expected to lead the Southampton attack against Liverpool on Saturday having recently become the first player since Peter Taylor in 1976 to score on his first two appearances for England. The striker worked his way up the leagues having been released by Liverpool, his boyhood team, as a 15-year-old. And while Rodgers accepts there may have been good reason for Lambert's release – Liverpool's first team contained Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen at the time – he sees the decision as symptomatic of the British game's tendency to overlook long-term potential.

"I think Rickie is a terrific player," the Liverpool manager said. "People look back now and say it was a mistake to let him go but there may have been something that was a factor. Rickie may not have been interested in football at the time or there may have been something else in his life. He just might not have been ready for what Liverpool was about at that time but there is absolutely no doubt within development that it cannot just be about what the player is now.

"With young talent you always have to look at what they could be. You see so many young British players who are thrown to the garbage because they are not strong or they are not quick at 12 years of age when they are going through growth spurts. Yet when they grow up they are as tall as anyone.

"The emphasis at the younger age should be on technique and for me Rickie Lambert, at whatever age he left here, must have been technically very good because he has still got that. If you are at an academy and have a young player in your system, it is not just about what he can do now it is what he can do later on."

Rodgers joined the congratulations for Lambert when the former Blackpool, Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers striker made his match-winning England debut against Scotland. The Liverpool manager revealed: "I sent him a fax when he made his England debut because I know he is a big red. I sent it on behalf of the club and all Kopites. He is a Kirkby boy and I was just wishing him well and saying we were all proud of him playing for England. Hopefully now he won't score against us."[/article]

I think this is an okay signing if it means the Lallana deal is a lot cheaper. He could do for us what Pizarro does for Bayern in his advanced age.

20M for the pair would be best case scenario I think right now. Even then, I'm not thrilled, but I do like Lambert as a player.

The only 32yr old Striker I'd like to see us spunk 8-10mill on is Zlatan. Must be a right kick in the spuds for Borini.

He's a good option, but come on, this isn't it. We'll be adding more, likely another striker.

Don't be a big blouse lads.

I'm chuffed for Lambert. Lifelong red and will give everything he's got while not moaning about being on the bench.
As long as we bring in quality attacking midfielder wise I'm fine with him as our 3rd striker.

@OptaJoe: 15 - Rickie Lambert was one of only 15 players in the top five European leagues in 2013-14 to both score & assist 10+ goals. Influence.

£4m for Lambert or £7m for Aspas / £10m for Borini.

This would be a decent deal if we can recoup the cost by selling Aspas.

I'd be fine if he was our fourth striker. With sturridges injury record and the number of games we have I think we need a better third choice.

I honestly like Lambert and I think he'll add something different to our squad, but + £4 million for a 32 year old player?

Is he good enough to challenge Sturridge and Suarez for one of their places though? That's the kind of player we need.

Its not though is it, in Suarez and Sturridge we have 2 of the very best, it would be a nice luxury to splash 30 million on a striker but its in no way a necessity, we dont need to be doing that, i would expect some decent money to be spent on a wide forward/winger who might be able to play as a striker though.

Lambert is something different and clearly a back up, i presume that means Borini is off then?, oh well.

Better than Aspas, cheaper than Remy...

I'm absolutely certain this is to misdirect Spurs.
