According to the Times and The Express (Joyce) we want to sign him on a free when his contract runs out next summer.
24 year old centre back that plays for Schalke, 6"4 and a Cameroonian international.

Dont know to much about him tbh.

Never heard of him or that Grujic bloke. Brilliant. Exactly what I want. Hope they are both boss if we get them.

Really?

He's a decent centre back, seems assured. Wouldn't have minded him a few years ago when he was originally breaking through, but I dunno about now like.

Suppose he fits the soccer maniacs profile

He has one year left on his contract and the only other team rumored to be linked with him is Newcastle.

I'd love to sign him. He is a very well-known player in Germany who came through Schalke's youth system and established himself as the first-choice CB at age 20 (he's 24 now). Very tall, very quick and agile, great at defending 1 on 1, likes to run forward with the ball and also scores regularly from corners. In terms of style think Ilori who actually made it. He's not a superb passer like Hummels, but he's getting more and more solid as a defender as he matures and he already for some time has been considered the best defender at Schalke. In fact he leads the Squawka performance score for all defenders in Germany this season.

He's born and raised in Germany, but chose to play for Cameroon. I think Newcastle tried to buy him this summer for £7M, but he chose to stay put. Just digging up some stuff on his contract, seems strange that Schalke let their best defensive player's contract come so close to expiration. This is what I found, sorry for bad translation:

Gelsenkirchen. As a long contract Poker hints: Joel Matip Schalke contract expires at season end. At the moment no further talks are planned
In the game against Bayern (1: 3). Was Joel Matip once again the best defensive player of FC Schalke 04. At the end of season passes the contract of the 24-year-olds. The talks on an extension falter. “There’s hooked,” said Schalke manager Horst Heldt on Saturday and added, “But not from my side. Joel wants to await developments. “It is unlikely that Schalke participates in the coming season in the Champions League. In addition, currently is still unclear whether Heldt is the right partner.

Matip is in great demand especially for English clubs and was last always talked about having to make a “choice of direction”. Goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann attempts to move Matip with emotional arguments to stay: “He knows what he has here, feel comfortable being friends is here, his parents live here – it does not say much for it to leave the club..”

This is the only highlights video I was able to find (Bundesliga goes very hard after copyright violators). Very German: bad editing and it's the first football video I've ever seen with classical music in background. But the highlights themselves are pretty comprehensive, even if they are from 3 years ago. You see some of his work as a DM there too.

Newcastle wanted to buy him last summer for 10 mill. He didnt want to go there as far as I've read.
Not that it matters but he's been linked to Arsenal, Napoli and Monaco aswell.

After reading Ruriks post I'd be very happy with this signing.

I haven't seen Matip play for a while. He was highly rated a few years ago.
I dunno, at this point anything would be better than what we have.

Imagine signing Matip (1.93m) and Süle (1.94m), no more problems with set pieces.

There's a lot more to winning headers than being tall, though, but yeah, it helps.

Hes easily better than Lovren and Toure, next season Skrtel will be 32 so I think it makes sense especially on a free. Sakho Matip Skrtel Gomez as the 4 CBs would be a good mixture of pace, strength and experience.

We will probably have to take a massive hit on selling Lovren though

If we can get both Matip and Sane from Schalke in the summer (Matip can sign pre-contract agreement in January), I think it would represent a huge coup. Too bad for Schalke, but I don't think the'll be able to keep both players if we are serious about this. Signing a top-level player in his prime like Matip on a free is something that the likes of Bayern do, not us – I hope we can finally join the big boys in how we do deals. And while Sane will be expensive, he will still cost probably less than half of what we got for Sterling – and Sane IMO has bigger potential than Sterling. I say this as a fan of Sterling, but Sane is something special and there is absolutely no limit to how good he can become with proper mentoring.

Usually I don't like it when young players leave their parent club too early. But in truth LFC with Klopp is a far, far better place for a young talent to develop than Schalke with it's merry-go-round of interim and journeyman managers, who are usually defensive-minded and think in the short term. I think this is why Matip is running down his contract to leave on a free and that's why Sane, for the sake of his career, should be looking to move on as well.

Why did they let his contract run out?

I think its more that he wanted to look at his other options. At least from what I've read.
He wants to play in the Premier League according to the newspaper stories I've read
