Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has targeted Bolton central defender Gary Cahill.

Benitez's bid for Cahill depends on whether the Spaniard stays at Anfield and if he is given funds by a new regime at Liverpool.

The Merseyside giants have informed Bolton that they are interested in signing Cahill but Liverpool will face competition from Spurs for the 24-year-old.

Cahill is contracted to Bolton until 2011/2012 but Bolton may be willing to sell him for a big fee in order for Owen Coyle to strengthen the Trotters squad in the summer.

Has he been any good this season?

He's the dogs bollocks that Cahill lad. Been impressed with him all season.

He's strong and quick and just loves defending.

He isn't a £15 million yet though but a big future awaits him.

If Benitez paid 15 million quid for a centre half before buying a striker he'd need shooting on the spot. Unless he had 200 million in his arse pocket.

Alex Ferguson could sanction the loan of young Italian striker Federico Macheda to Serie A side Palermo as he looks to steal a march on his Premier League rivals in the race to sign the Sicilian outfit's highly-rated defender Simon Kjaer.

The Danish international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the last 18 months with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City also rumoured to be battling the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan for his signature.

It is reported in Italy that Manchester United starlet Macheda has been pinpointed as a suitable short-term target by Palermo as they look to build on a terrific season in Serie A in which they are challenging more established big names for a spot in the Champions League. The 18-year-old has suffered a series of injuries since making his Premier League debut last year and had first-team minutes at Old Trafford severely limited as a consequence. Despite the lengthy setback it is understood that Sir Alex Ferguson still firmly believes in the potential of his young charge and would have no problem lending him to a top European side so long as he was guaranteed regular first-team football.

Having already signed Fulham youngster Chris Smalling and with Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans already on the books, Manchester United have two possible successors to the stalwart duo of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. However, with speculation continuing to circle that the giant Serb is keen on a move to Spain the links with Dane Kjaer refuse to die down.

Despite repeatedly pledging his loyalty to Palermo it is only a matter of time before Kjaer does look to test himself in a higher profile environment. Having marshalled the Rosanero's defence this term and formed a strong partnership with Liverpool's Daniel Agger during Denmark's World Cup qualification campaign the former FC Midtjylland protégé has proved himself a mature and capable leader.

A self-confessed childhood fan of Liverpool it is believed that Kjaer initially favoured a move to Anfield. However, with the Reds likely to be playing Europa League football next year the door has been left open for Chelsea, Manchester City and the aforementioned United to take advantage. Kjaer is valued in excess of £15 million; a figure which could prove a bargain given the player's tender years and long-term potential.

Or spent big on a Goalie lol. But yeah you're right, we've other positions in the team that need addressing first.

Personally i'd make up front the no1 priority, swiftly followed by the left back position.

It would not surprise me in the slightest bit if he did do that Sheik. Then again he probably won't even be here.

I think he will be Patrick but that's a discussion for another topic/day.

Our defense has cost us just as much as our attack this season, surely?

He'll probably do it and then play him up front.

No it wouldn't but it's not worth slagging him off until he does.

It was slightly tounge in cheek.

If this is true he's a fucking clown and only proves why so many of us have lost faith in him. Not that I don't rate Cahill, I do, but we have far more pressing concerns.

I think there's some truth to him looking at a defender. Wilson, Kjaer and now Cahill, and all for big money. Like Sheik says, unless there's mega funds elsewhere for attacking options and a left back he will need shooting.

Or unless he's planning to sell Agger or Skrtel to finance the deal. But yeah, I agree £15m on a CB seems a misuse of limited funds when we've spent most of the season with a left flank consisting of Insua and Babel, and with Wash as our back-up striker.

Would you seriously not take Tim Cahill on a free, Sheik? He may be an irritating cunt, but he scores LOADS of goals for a CM.

Benitez will not spend £15M on Cahill, so there's no point giving him stick for it.

I wouldn't take Tim Cahill on a free either.

Seeing that prick in a Liverpool shirt wouldn't be right.

I wouldn't blame rafa for targeting a center back as our major problem this season has been keeping clean sheets more so than scoring goals. you have to wonder how man more points we'd have if we had a tighter defense. for example, the brum game, everyone was going on about the inability to score the winning goal but it was our calamitous defending that game brum a foothold in a game we dominated.

but I do wont rafa to buy a striker first.

I wouldn't. I just don't like him.

As for signing a CB, I do think we need a new one for the long-term. Whether we can get away with signing one this summer or Gary Cahill is the man for the job, I don't know. Is this guy actually a good player? I've seen nothing of Bolton this year.

After all the talk of Kjaer, I'm sold on him being the best defender the game has ever known.

Carragher will no doubt need a successor bought in this season, but I'd hope it wasn't the first priority, especially from a financial point of view.

Benitez has always done a fine job of bringing in defenders on a budget, so I hope he manages to land a decent CB and a LB for not too much money. This would fee up the pounds to bring in a LW and a striker.

But we might also need a new CM.

We really are shit, aren't we.

His record of signing CBs is pretty good. He is pretty terrible at signing fullbacks though.

I think Benitez hands all, or too much, responsibility to his scouts and maybe doesn't properly analyse a player through his own eyes. It's the only thing that really explains such an inconsistent transfer policy.

With regards to fullbacks, I think "terrible" is slightly harsh. His mistakes are: initially underating Finnan and signing Josemi, but then seeing the good Finnan bought to the side - and unsuccessfully replacing Riise with Dossena/Selling Riise, depending on how you see it.

But Arbeloa was an astute pick up for peanuts, Aurelio's a decent fullback on a freebie (although his time is up) and I do like Johnson a lot.

In short, anything could happen.

Even if he had £100m to spend? 😉
