I can't accept that the lack of a new LB is predicated on the sale of Benteke or Balotelli.

I'd be terrified if it was.

Well we can rule out any sale of Balotelli, we're getting fuck all for him. But regards to a zero net spend, I don't think that's realistic. They want/need their asset to perform on the pitch, and they know that means investment. They've given successive managers plenty of money to spend, so there's no reason they're going to suddenly shut it down on Klopp.

Watched the Sunderland vs BVB friendly; and its clear they will be needing a striker that can actually score.
