What next for Lovren

I'd suggest that Lovren would look like a fucking great CB if he had a decent DM infront of him and a decent keeper behind him.

No, you're missing what is right in front of you. Nothing is going to give him better anticipation, pace, turning radius or heading ability. What that might do is make the defense look better by covering up more of his inadequacies and hiding him better.

So would just about every average centre-half. I think his problems are just more basic.

Could someone suggest to me a CB that would look great in our team, with no DM, a ropey keeper, and the Rodgers anti-defence setup.
Singling out Lovren for being rubbish in that setup doesn't make any sense.

See, now you're changing the yard stick. We can tell that Sakho looks exposed because of the system. Lovren is shit and is exposed by the system.

The fact the other CB's look considerably better than him every time they play.

I don't know Mors, but I'm sure there's one out there who doesn't ball watch and actually anticipates stuff and acts upon it. One who's indecisiveness doesn't culminate in errors through either delayed reaction or diving in like a 10 year old and getting taken completely out the equation. Skrtel doesn't look anywhere near as bad, at least he tries to dominate, infact more often than not, he spends games sweeping up the fuck ups of those around him.

I don't disagree there are problems with the system, but that doesn't explain away carelessness, like the sort of play we saw against a Malaysian XI.

What's an infographic? Is that a proper word that business type people use? In which case, LOL
Yeah, it's too explain that the graph is providing information in a graphic form.

As opposed to all the other graphs that do exactly the same thing.

I'm not disagreeing with you on those mistakes, but I've seen all those sort of things out of Skrtel, Sakho and Toure at times. I'm not saying he's excellent or shite, I'm just saying for me it seems hard to single him out for these mistakes that they all make, with the system we play. I'd be interested to see how all 4 of our CB's perform in a Mourinho team. Lovren may look absolute gash in one, but then they all might, but they all might look great.

So it's a graph. A pie chart is still a graph, just with polar coordinates (radius, angle) instead of cartesian ones (vertical, horizontal)
It's a picture of a graph. No polar coordinates or even Cartesian. Just a picture. You have to dumb down to understand.

There was a spell at the beginning of last season of several games, where you could single him out as a culprit in alot of the goals we conceded. I don't know, I don't normally write players off early, but he just seems completely lacking in awareness and his mistakes are often basic stuff.

I understand that we overexpose our defensive players, and anyone under those conditions are going to make forced errors, but with him alot of it seems unforced, he gets the basics wrong in the first instance.

Ohh this is like a platonic deal. Not the actual graph, but a picture of one seen as shadows on a cave wall. I get it now, its insurance in case the business pitch goes the way of Lovren's defending you can recover by saying well that's just an infographic, rest assured the real graph answers all your criticisms.

Exactly 12 months ago, we'd dicked Dortmund 3-0, Lovren looked like Franco fucking Baresi and we were all yeah got 4 players in to cover for Suarez great move.

How times changed.

Wrong. Here, let me shed light on the truth with this awesome infographic.

He made some great passes in that game and looked generally assured. I was certain he was ready for a good season.

Sigh.

Is Lovren getting the form back that made him a £20m player?

Who knows. The only thing we can confidently predict is that, knowing this forum, he is one more good game away from being lauded by some as possibly the greatest CB of his generation.

Isn't that the whole beauty of being a fan, though? Building them up in hope only to knock them down in frustration.

All on the internet.

Encouraging performance from him. It's only been one game but he is benefiting from playing with two full backs who seem capable of defending. Long may it continue.

I genuinely can't remember ever watching him play for Southampton or whoever he played for before them, so I've no idea how good he's supposed to be.

What didn't help Lovren was he came in as the 'big I am' and failed to back it up. He was trying to be the voice of authority yet kept making awful mistakes.

He's back down to earth now and whilst he's not as good as he was meant to be, he's not as bad as he showed last season.

I wonder at whether he can strike up an effective partnership with Skrtel. He'll want to usurp Skrtel as the main CB and I bet he'll find it hard to curb his desire to, yet he needs to play second fiddle.

Let's face it, alot of what we're seeing is a combination of two fullbacks who can actually defend and us playing the same back four more or less throughout the Summer. The fullbacks know how to tuck in when needed, like all our best fullbacks have done and we *finally* have a backline that's starting to breed a bit of continuity and understanding. Eventually their respective flaws will come to the fore again, but in the meantime we might see that some improvement is enough improvement, provided we start scoring goals too.
