Liverpool FC defender Dejan Lovren: Don't make me scapegoat for last season

Centre-back launches staunch defence but admits he must do better this campaign

Dejan Lovren and Simon Mignolet of Liverpool arrive in Kuala Lumpur on July 21, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Dejan Lovren admits he needs to improve this season – but insists he shouldn’t be made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s woes last term.
The Croatia international endured a torrid first year at Anfield following his £20million move from Southampton.
The most expensive centre-back in the club’s history came in for plenty of flak after producing a succession of error-strewn performances as the Reds trailed home sixth in the Premier League.
However, Lovren believes some of the criticism was unfair and he’s determined to win over the doubters this season.

“It has been tough,” Lovren said.
“I think it was a tough year for everyone at the club and the fans.
“I wasn’t quiet last season, I just wanted to concentrate on myself. I knew what was happening with how I was playing was not right and I didn’t want to speak about it.
“At Southampton it was different. There was a good atmosphere and I was happy. If I am not playing well, I cannot be happy. I didn’t pretend.
“But it is not Dejan Lovren-Liverpool, you know? I cannot defend all alone. It is 11 players. When we are good, everyone is good.
“When we are bad, everyone is bad, not just me. I think we need to look like this, not just put the pressure on me or point the finger. I don’t agree with this.
“I know what the papers were writing about me. I don’t want to have to listen to this again. We want to move on as a team. When we are better, it is because we will be doing all together good.”

God, what a shit attitude. He actually has the attributes to be a terrific CB. Pity he's such a cocksure bellend.

Doesnt do himself any favours does he. If he had just said he was poor last season and would work hard to improve this season it would have been so much better.

I get that stats can be used sometimes to prove a point but not in this case. Even if we won every game he's played in it doesn't change the fact he's shit. Would just mean we won in spite of him not because of him. It's like he can't even do the basics. He's just a total calamity who needs to go.

Was anyone saying he was shit for Southampton? Was anyone saying he couldn't even do the basics? Not that I remember. He looked good, and certainly never crap. So there's an empirical marker: he CAN play much, much, better than he's done for us so far. There's plenty of justification for debating why he's been so poor for us, but he's certainly not a player incapable of doing better.

He was hidden at Southampton.

No, but a significant number thought he was nowhere near worth £20 million and was an absolute bellend for the way he agitated for a move. But it's not his fault that we paid the money falls on of our scouts and management for failing to appreciate the context in which he seemed to stand out for Southampton.

Southampton played with a decent DM. Rodgers leaves his CBs exposed at all times because he refuses to do what every successful manager in today's game do. We'll never get one. We will continue to ship goals regardless of who plays at CB.
Louvren is gash though.

Is there anything more tragic than a self indulgent footballer who can't play football.
A sheep dressed up as mutton.

He did have better protection at Soton with Schneiderlin and Wanyama infront of him.
But he played next to Luke Shaw, who isnt the best defensively and is very attacking minded.
To suggest that he was hidden and not exposed at times is bs.

As said loads of times before. Lovren had a poor season and needs to step up. But a large part of this is the systems fault and our inability to offer any protection from midfield. The amount of times teams just ran through our midfield were shocking last season.

Hopefully Rodgers and co are focusing on the system and set up this summer. Adding Milner to the central midfield will also help. Gerrard wasnt the best at tracking back or tracking runners last season..

He says he was shit - correct.
He says our defending was shit - correct.
He says defending is done collectively - correct.

Could he have been more smart about his replies - sure.

Mark Lawrenson:
[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/mark-lawrenson-im-worried-liverpool-9725565]I still think Dejan Lovren will come good at Liverpool.

But, really, he’s going to have to start pulling his finger out now.

He STILL looks nervous. More importantly and more worryingly, though, is that he always makes a mistake during the course of a match.

If you’re an opposition manager, you’d be telling your striker to be aware Lovren can blunder at any time and be alert to the possibility.

The goal we conceded against the Malaysia XI was an example of this.

Rather than attack the ball, he held off and waited to see what would happen, and the striker produced a fine finish.

Lovren doesn’t seem to have improved much, and we’ve not been playing world-beaters lately.

And that’s why Brendan Rodgers probably has no choice but to go with Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho as his first-choice centre-back partnership for the start of the season.

To be fair to Lovren, he looks like someone who needs to be cajoled through a game. He needs good communication.

And that’s something Skrtel has never been overly great at.

In many ways, the best defensive communicator we have is Kolo Toure, but he isn’t going to play that often.

Being as nervous and error-prone as Lovren doesn’t help your team-mates, but as a defender you should always expect your partner to make a mistake – that’s the way you should think when you are playing.

The problem with Lovren is that he seems to make the simple things difficult and the difficult things quite easy.[/article]

That's Lovren done with now when Lawro gives his verdict.
Can't believe we stumped up 20 million quid for this absolute cabbage.
I haven't hated a player as much since Diouf.

He's been dreadful. The whole defensive set up has been poor under Rodgers and is undoubtedly more exposed than his Southampton days, but is frequent individual errors which cost us. His positioning is dreadful and he's got a terrible turning circle and acceleration. Once the ball is behind him, he's done.

Which would be ok if he read the initial danger, like Hyypia would have, but he just doesn't anticipate anything. Or he does, but he just doesn't react quick enough.

Yep.
It's the basics of defending that he has a problem with.
We can all blame the set up and lack of a defensive midfielder which is fair but the lad just isn't a good defender.
And his attitude and self loathing is sickening.

Lovren hasn't been great, but people in this thread have been going on like he's the new Paletta/Traore/Kromkamp. He's not that bad.
Skrtel obviously gets a free ride also, cos he knocks the odd one in the other end and rescues his poor positioning with the odd last minute sliding diving tackle, so covers up his shit.

Whatever the system, we'd be conceding a heck of a lot less if we had Carra&Sami in the middle.
Our centre backs just aren't very good.
