Squarely on the manager…

If this was not the EPL but Ukrainian Premier League, I would say it's obvious the team and the manager are deliberately throwing the game. Bizarre, bizarre decision-making from Rodgers, from the needless introduction of a new system, which resulted in several players at once being forced to play in their less-than-ideal positions (Sterling at RWB, Johnson at RCB, Hendo at AM) to the substitutions that didn't change anything (because the underlying faulty tactics were still in place).

Fans will be criticizing the players, but I actually thought individually they did OK – again, the system was the problem. People will say Sterling didn't do anything – but he was forced to run at 2-3 players without any support from the fullback and whenever he lost the ball there was a huge gap behind him on our right flank with Johnson far behind. Was it Sterling's fault or the manager's? On the other flank Moreno couldn't use his speed running forward because he was stationed so far upfield that there was very little space to run into – but behind him there was all that space for pacey Newcastle players to counter-attack into with Lovren looking very uncomfortable trying to stop players who were flying down that flank at pace. Again, is this Moreno's or Lovren's fault or the manager's? And beside trying to thread the needle into the wing-backs (so that even when they do get an ideal pass from midfield, they are up against 2 players on their flank – hardly worth all the effort), what was our attacking plan? I didn't see any trace of one.

What makes it even worse is Newcastle did everything in their power NOT to win this game. For all the talk about their newfound momentum, they looked far from a confident or a clinical team. They could have earned 2 red cards, which would have changed the momentum of the game they were otherwise controlling, they made wrong decisions time and time again, they let the game open up for no reason and let Coutinho have a point-blank header at Krul – in short, Newcastle were there for the taking. But our team's determination to "throw" this game was greater and after multiple invitations, Newcastle finally reluctantly accepted.

Overall, a really, really infuriating game and one that defies rational analysis. We could have been building some nice momentum towards the Real and Chelsea games, instead our own manager threw a monkey wrench into the works and made us lose against a shit side for no reason at all. Oh, and the ref has been shite too.

Good day, everyone. Buy yourself some cookies or something to make yourself feel better. This has been shite.

Thought that was a bit OTT but, as I said in the other thread, we were very poor from Mario to the kit man.

Rodger's refusing to play a striker; changing the shape at the back were all strange. Sterling refusing to move from the touchline, Allen turning into and out of and into trouble constantly, Coutinho (who I said beforehand should not have started) not finding a pass or Moreno's disastrous 5 minutes were not the result of the system.

The problem, IMO, is that Rodgers didn't seem to want to take Newcastle into account in this game. He just looked like he was playing the players he wanted with an approach he wanted - regardless of who we were playing.

I actually thought we controlled most of the play and, in the ten minutes leading up to the goal, they looked clueless as to how to hold the ball. no presence up front and shot to pieces in midfield. We simply had no urgency or tempo going forward for the entire match.

Go on, tell Lee Radcliffe he did a terrible job today. He got all the tough-spelling player names right, and their numbers as well. Kits looked bright and new too. Go on now, tell Lee what he did wrong now.

He gave Henderson's shirt to his shit twin.

In case you didn't notice, we were trying to play 3-4-2-1 today:

----------------Ming----------------
----GlenJo--Skrtel--Lovren----
Sterling------------------Moreno
--------Gerrard--Allen-----------
-------Coutinho--Hendo--------
--------------Balotelli-------------

To say it failed spectacularly is an understatement.

Good post.

I've got serious doubts about Rodgers all of a sudden.

I'll 'like' this post for @Ryan. He really wanted to 'like' it - You can tell. He was prevented from doing so as he deems such things beneath him. I'll save him the conundrum. You're welcome Ryan.

It wasn't that good.
I could 'unlike' it if you prefer? I was sensing some love in your response and thought I'd take away the anguish of you wanting to 'like' a post for the first time. Maybe I shouldn't presume. Just trying to help a brother out.

“I am confident we will improve the team further and will be stronger for this coming season, when we will be competing on all fronts; domestically and in the greatest club competition in the world, the Champions League.”

“We lost a world-class talent [Suarez] and the natural progress of the team was halted – we needed the squad rebuilt, I think where we are is what was expected. The players we brought in were not really established. That decision was made knowing they might struggle a bit initially but further in the future would be big players for the club. That is where we are right now.”

Make up your mind, Brendan.

Wasn't Suarez sold on the 16th July?

It's like his first season all over again.

You can see what he is trying to do but it's not working at all.

Bad times.

Give him a chance for fuck sake. Yes, he's made mistakes but he's lost his top striker and his second highest scoring striker is out injured. 90% of last season's goals came from 2 players that aren't playing right now. Are people really that stupid that they expected us to do as well as last season, not to mention the added distraction of CL football?

He's tried to address the backline and failed. But at least he's tried. He also got what look like 2 decent fullbacks. There's a bit of trial and error going on. His biggest failing is in the amount of money he has spent.

Bottom line is, he has shown he can change things around and people need to be patient. This thing of sacking manager after manager gets on my tits

Ha well if you can't see it then we really must be fucked.

Heh.

Completely seriously, I do not think Rodgers knows what he's doing right now. That mess on Saturday was astonishing. How could he stand and watch that unfold without changing it was beyond me.

I haven't seen a whole lot of sense or obvious logic in what he's been doing tactically so far this season. It's all looked painfully dysfunctional.

There better be a method to the madness, otherwise it's going to be a very long season.

I'm still a firm believer that a change between the sticks will help enormously at the back, and clearly having both Suarez and Sturridge out is gonna hurt any team...

That said he hasn't really responded with any flashes of inspiration has he during this shite run we're in... the team we have available is under-performing almost to a man and that's gotta be his responsibility.

Sort out the defence, it's been bad for too long, get Sturridge back and hope for the best. That's the extent of our season now, it might not be all that bad, we were pretty shite at the start of last season too...

By January we'll be fine. It'll take a while to click

Click into what though? Like others have said, I'm not really sure what we're supposed to look like. We're not the fast counter-attacking team we were last year and we're not the possession-heavy team we were in the first year. And we don't seem to be trying to be either. I've no idea what we're supposed to look like eventually and that, sadly, reminds me of how I felt when Kenny was in charge a few years ago.

The same as Rodgers first season where we lost to Villa and we were fucking awful. They Brodge stopped fucking about and we went boss
