Southampton post-match

Smash and run win. Could not hold on to the ball for most of the match. Defended well as a team. Wobly at times. Lucky not to concede.

Win. Yay.

Thought Lazar was completely shit today, he played 1 good ball into the box but aside from that was so lightweight and half hearted. He may as well have bent over and let Clyne have his way in the first half.

Today might have been a small nail in the Lazar at fullback coffin, or at least reason to not select him against a decent fullback/winger/both.

Carra's comments about Brendan coaching players and how his sides have improved so much in the 2nd half of a season were refreshing and reassuring*. We are in for an exciting second half of the season!

*next season pls Brendan don't buy 100 new players. Stick to quality.

What did Carra say?

Ok, I didn't realise Sakho was injured prior to the game meaning Lovren would play.

What I didn't get at all and it was blindingly obvious from the start was, why was Lovren, a left footer on the right of the three and Can the vice versa.

It just seemed to make us very nervous, and of course the pitch didn't help.

As cloggy mentioned - Can did play LB for Leverkusen a number of times, so I was surprised to see him switch over, I could see the reason for it, since Lovren had been playing RCB in the past few sub appearances when he came on and we pushed Can into midfield.

Oddly, I think that probably worked better for us actually. It felt like Djuricic and Clyne were a handful down our wide and inside left, while on the right, only Elia was their primary threat. So, taking into account their distribution of attacking power / intent, it seemed to be the right decision. Markovic's inability to defend made things look really bad in the first half, but once Moreno came in, we didn't see the same jitters in the first 45 minutes. I think I might've been more nervous in the first half had it been Lovren behind Markovic.

............I will add that I was extremely disappointed with Markovic, who just didn't seem up for it from the start. He looked like he didn't have the determination to run the yards or put the effort in.

Lallana similarly disappointed me, but I suspect with him it was more the reception he got, he didn't seem able to take it mentally.

Not very Portuguese-like weather. Suspect Marko really didn't like running in that. Watching him I thought he looked like I often felt playing rugby at school in freezing cold, rainy, weather when I'd rather be anywhere else than on the pitch !

Lallana - I thought the reception he got from the Saints' fans was utterly disgusting. He played 250+ games for them and helped bring them up from the Championship, simply scraping-the-barrel-class supporters. At least Lambo was well received.

Ha, early on he just kinda stopped running & let their player get it, he looked utterly dejected & completely miserable, & the first though I had was 'I'm pretty sure I looked like that standing on the pitch in the pissing down rain at school'.

He just didn't want to be there. Whilst I may have sympathy were it a Sunday league team, the lad is being paid thousands to do that, so he should man the fuck up & put a shift in, or fuck off.

Hopefully Lallana was just surprised at the reception he received, as was everyone else, & next time he'll be out to prove a point, otherwise you'd have to call into question his mental strength.

It wasn't a very good game and Southampton should feel hard done by as the ref was dreadful and they played well enough to not lose but thems the breaks.

Massive game against City on Sunday. An injury to Yaya and Silva would be great.

It was a professional performance against a good team in awful conditions. We were unusually fortunate with one or two decisions but that said we defended admirably. I would give Skrtel and Mignolet 8/10, Ibe and Lovren 7/10 and everyone else 6/10 (apart from Markovic who didn't fancy it at all) and it's nice to win such a game with such an average team performance.....it bodes well.

And just to clarify, Lovern is one of those right footed players who THINKS he's left footed. Lallana is another.

Yeah, Lovern was mostly shit yesterday, but he did make a couple of important interceptions.

If you don't know the Lallana story by now there is no future for you as an LFC fan !

Which story? I possibly do know it.

The one about him teaching himself to use both feet equally from the age of 8 yrs old. Shooting, passing, tricks .. if he learnt it with one foot then he'd perfect it with the other too. There is no 'thinks he's ambidextrous' about it.

I never said ambidextrous. I said "thinks he's left footed" [emoji6]
