Shelvey: I had to leave the Kop after not getting a fair crack of the whip

Jonjo Shelvey has claimed he was not given ‘a fair crack of the whip’ at Liverpool – but expects to thrive at Swansea City now that he has left Steven Gerrard’s shadow.

The 21-year-old managed only nine starts at Liverpool last season and such was his deteriorating status that they were happy to offload him for £6million this summer.

Both sides of the deal think they got a bargain, but Michael Laudrup afforded himself a smug grin on Thursday night after watching the one-time England midfielder excel in Swansea’s 4-0 Europa League demolition of Malmo.

Shelvey has a lot more to prove over the coming season, not least because the expectation is that he could be a long-term successor to Leon Britton as Swansea’s pass master.

For Shelvey, the necessity is playing time – something that was scarce in a midfield led by Gerrard.
He said: ‘You can’t put me and him (Gerrard) in the same sentence because it’s just ridiculous how good he is, but people have compared me to him and that is just an honour. I have gone from living next door to him to living on a farm out here but it is good.

‘I have enjoyed every minute of being here so far, and my missus is loving it as well. It is a big, big thing to leave, to come away from one of the biggest clubs in football, but I felt that I needed to come and play.

‘I didn’t want to sit behind people. I felt that I wasn’t getting a fair crack of the whip at Liverpool but that’s football. I can’t fault any of the players there because they were first class.

‘I felt my days had come to an end, I needed to get away whether it was on loan or permanent, but I needed to leave and try to get some football.’

In some respects, the challenge of attaining that at Swansea will not be much easier than at Anfield. In addition to Britton, Laudrup has re-signed Jonathan De Guzman on loan and recruited Jose Canas from Real Betis, while Ki Sung Yeung remains from last season.

Even with the demands of the Europa League, five ambitious central midfielders is a lot to juggle and Laudrup indicated on Thursday that no selection is a certainty.

Shelvey said: ‘If I play the majority of the games I feel my performances will start to get better. The hardest thing for a young professional footballer is consistency and that is what I have to try and find and take myself to that next level.’

Bollocks, he was given more chances than many other fringe players.
Didnt even look arsed half of the time.

Bit harsh modo

He looked boss at times, but shite at others. Its part of developing a player.

Exactly.

And lets be honest our midfield was shite, he could have easily been given more playing time. He's at a crucial stage of his development now - I think he's got potential to be Lampard like, not quite as good but that style. If he feels like he was wronged with us Swansea might have a highly motivated player on their hands.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's more effective than Gerrard next season.

Like Fabio says it is all part of his development but I'd have serious doubts over his mentality.
He sulks, he mouths off and can switch off when things not going for him. Not good traits for a CM.
But he has got talent and if he is motivated, he could be a player. Like Andy Carroll you can bet he'll come back to fucking haunt us in games to come.

I thought he had potential, but the more I saw him play the more I noticed that he was just too slow both physically and mentally.
No, I'm not saying that he's retarded. I'm saying that he had to think too much before passing it, needed to much time on the ball.

He'll be a decent player in the future, but I don't think we'll ever regret selling him.

He was given chances and his performances were erratic, but he was played quite a bit out of position.

I would have preferred he went out on loan.

well it seemed pretty obvious that he had a falling out or at least fell out of favour with rodgers after that stoke game . Well i think it was stoke . It seems to be a small feature of rodgers that he'll get shut of a player quickly that he has no time for .

Anyway in this case i wasn't so against him leaving , i just would have liked a reasonable re-buy clause like madrid and others always seem to have just incase .

He had more than enough time but can any club fighting for a Top 4 spot afford to let any player not only be so inconsistent (even during the course of a single game) but refuse to heed a manger's instructions from the bench whilst acknowledging them ?

I was never overly impressed with Shelvey, he usually gave back with the left boot whatever kudos he earned with the right boot.

Its the typical example of a player that will only get better in peoples eyes as time goes on compared to how good he actually was imho.

He was given plenty of chances but failed to take the step up. His attitude looked shit on the pitch at times and there has been plenty of stories about his boozing and "nightlife". Some of his comments after the move also show hoe stupid he is.
If Rodgers doesnt want to work with that then fine.

He's been good in pre season against Malmo and Dutch 2nd div teams but that doesnt change anything.
A loan would maybe have been better to see if he developed while at Swansea, but Rodgers obviously has his reasons for getting rid.

He'll probably do quite well at Swansea with lower expectations and pressure. He has a great range of passing that can benefit them. But, imho, he lacks the game intelligence, finishing ability and movement to be anywhere near Lampard or Gerrard.

Tbh, I hope he's shite or Shelvey threads will pop up everywhere.

I completely agree, actually. Everything looked a bit laboured with him. He'll not play much more regularly with Swansea.

If you aren't getting enough chances then you are not performing in matches and more importantly in training. He had some chances but each time he wasted them, it may be down to his young age but his ego is bigger than his talent. I am all for having belief in yourself but you have to match it with performances which he didn't.

He will struggle to nail a place in the Swansea side.

Is this another story of too much money to soon where the youngster feels he has made it from a financial point of view and so loses the desire they had when they were starting out?

I'm gutted. He was possibly, maybe, probably as good any potential prospect I've ever potentially seen. As well as all those many other exciting prospects in the past such as er, er... well their names temporarily escape me, but you know what I mean, who could have been great if weren't for others doing them down.

On the one hand I feel quite tearful for poor Jonjo's plight, on the other I think get a feckin' grip you daft twat.

I liked Shelvey and thought he had a lot of promise.

Would've preferred to see us send him out on loan but as things stand hope we put in a sell-on clause just in case.

Yeah, I still think he could make it, he's got quite a few flaws, he's still extremely raw, but his passing ability and his eye for goal give you alot to work with. I don't buy this notion that he was given enough time, certainly not in the right conditions. He was played wide, played as a front man when Suarez was injured/suspended and most of his game time was during the first half of the season when we forced to play Suso, Sterling and the whole set up was struggling to bed in.

I think this will bite us on the arse. I'll always have fond memories, if only because he gave it to that twat up the East Lancs.

What stories about boozing and nightlife?

I don't recall those. The rest is the the manager knows best routine, which I'm amazed anyone trots out these days after years if us having managers make mistake after mistake.

Lets hope Luis Alberto is better than him.

It's also amazing how some posters have indulged in Lucas giving away brainless freekicks for years, but this kid does it and he's a write off.

Indulged ? I think you'll find plenty pulling their fucking hair out .. but it's not like WE can sell him is it.

We sold him for the right fee. I said it a while ago and stand by it - he'll end up a mid - bottom prem player at best and might even end up a league lower in time.

It doesnt matter what types of mistakes thats been made in the past. If Rodgers doesnt want him then thats fair enough. Its his call and he sees him on the training ground every day. Say what you want but he's been very good so far developing young players.

As I said I hope he's shite or else we'll never hear the end of it.

I'm with Ross on this.

You can't state there have been a plethora of tales re: Shelvey's boozing and then fail to back that claim up.
