You're speaking crap Rosco.

I've already named 4 recent keepers off the top of my head who have thrived well into their 30's whilst having similar styles, heights and builds to Pepe. You've simply read something about "agility and reflexes" and jumped to the conclusion that Pepe will turn to shite, even though there is enough evidence to say other wise.

No you and the others are convincing yourself that because a few keepers have managed to be good in their thirties that any keeper can do it.

None of the keepers you named ever had the physical gifts Reina did. Players with elite physical gifts almost always decline earlier than those without. Look at Gerrard now, look at what happened to Owen, look at Torres.

That's the cornerstone of your case, and it's hooey.

Well let's see who is right then. Because I know who is in the lead right now. And everyone can see it.

At least there is a fucking cornerstone to my case. Yours is traditional footballing bollocks. Exactly the type of decision making that has us in the mire.

I'm not trying to convince myself of anything mate.

So when you look at Kahn, Cesar, Freidel and Howard, what elite physical attributes would you suggest they had/have? See in my eyes they strike me as being very much from the same mould as Pepe (height/build/styles).

We simply don't know enough to suggest wether this season is a blip (and he hasn't been anywhere near as bad as some people are making out) or if this is indeed a sign of things to come. I for one am not willing to accept that because you've read a report about "agility and reflexes", that that means that Pepe is now in decline permanently

Love the bloke to pieces.

But....is it time to bring in proper competition?

It's certainly time to bring back his old coach, and thank god we're trying to do that. I don't see how a number 2 can provide serious competition to a keeper who'll still play most of the matches. Keepers need to play week in week out, and number 2s don't do that anymore. Anyway, the last time we tried to get keepers to compete we managed to mess up not only James but also Friedel.

I hardly think we have seen enough of Doni to write him off. If we got a top young keeper in he would not get a chance either.
It was rank bad management that we have been to two finals and played near a full league season and the only time our number two got a game was when Pepe was suspended, he is bound to be ring rusty if he never gets a fucking game.
As for Pepe he has been poor , but again a little too soon to rite him off. Schoolboy errors from him are costing us, but not as much as lack of goals and crap formations.

regards

If we can get a excellent keeper to replace him (i.e. Lloris), I'd sell. I think he's had a decent year - and has been excellent at times, but it's clear he's on the decline. He can still fetch a lot of money (maybe Barca would take him?)

I don't disagree. It's not particularly surprising. The reason he was so good was his agility and reflexes, studies have shown they peak in the mid twenties. Reina will be thirty later this year.

I don't think that was what made him good, I don't think he's ever really been a top shot stopper, his biggest assets have always been his presence and his ability to sweep behind the defense. As someone mentioned to me yesterday, the defensive system is different now to what he was used to under Rafa, we played Zonal Marking for years and although it was flawed, he was clearly more comfortable within that set up. It's also worth saying that he's not as protected as he once was, by a settled back four and a overly defensive central midfield. We're more exposed these days and it's already cost Carra his place and now it seems it's showing Reina to be uncomfortable too.

Not ignoring them factors completely but I think you're looking deep into it.

Reina's mistakes this season have been mainly down to basic errors on his part - not covering his front post, diving too early, poor decision making.

Nothing to do with marking systems and wotnot imo.

Still rate Pepe so not gonna throw him out yet.

If he were to be sold mind you, I'd be all over Ruddy. He's the bomb.

Ruddy is a solid prem keeper but i don't think he has that extra something that the likes of cech, Van Der Sar, Reina, Lloris have for example.

Vorm on his day is sublime, but he needs to work out some concentration issues

He hasn't been great, but he is fairly solid, he can mostly be relied upon. I'd stick with him for as long as he's performing at a decent level.

Take a look at the difficulties Ferguson has had with keepers over the years, even this year after paying £20 million for a keeper who has probably cost them a few points along the way. Better the devil you know......

Not convinced about Ruddy BTW. I've seen him turn in some pretty iffy displays alongside the good ones. I'd just as soon see Doni in goal.

This thread is hilarious.

"Name me another keeper with Reina's physical abilities"

People name about 10.

Anger ensues.

Yep, Vorm has been great in his first season in the Prem.

I feel sorry for Bogdan. What an ugly bastard. I bet with all that money he is still depressed.
