Pre match: Southampton away

You know that 'slip' that led to us not winning the title a couple of years ago.... I kind of blame him Sakho partly for it - for passing that ball fucking sideways to Gerard. If he could have passed it forward to the far left then just maybe....

Sakho used to do this stuff all the time and I continuously pointed it out, only to be faced with how statistically good his passing was. He repeatedly played the ball into players facing their own goal with opposition markers around them, when there was a safer option more or less always on. No wonder we looked so fucking shaky in posession at the back.

Coutinho's scan yesterday was precautionary - tight hamstring. He missed the session, but it would've been a light one for him anyway. #LFC

I'm not really sure what the point is of that. We signed four big players from them who are now ever presents in a team that looks like it could win the title. They've replaced them with four good players who've helped maintain their stability and position around the Europa League places.
You still have to admire their ability replace top class players with other top class players. The two swaps that stand out for me are Tadic for Lallana and Redmond for Mané.
Tadic is just a very good player and to be fair that had more to do with Koeman knowing his national league than Southampton's scouting.
They paid less than half of what we paid for Lallana and arguably got a player that is just as good. We don't know how Tadic would perform with better players around him so it's quite difficult to state that he's better than Lallana imo.

Redmond for Mané is another interesting replacement. Redmond was and maybe still is a top talent. What Southampton are doing is providing him with a platform to excel. Something Norwich never could imo, because their squad is somewhere between average and wank.
It's just a smart move and sure it's been done before, I'm talking about poaching the best players from relegated teams.
We might not see the best of Redmond this season but his future is looking a lot brighter than it did with Norwich.

Aldeiwereld better than Lovren? This season? Fuck no.

Lambert vs Pelle is just a lazy comparison. We bought Lambert to be our third maybe fourth choice. Yes from their perspective we did replace their starting front man, so yeah, sure, they did get a much better player in Pelle.

I sometimes wish we would look at players players from relegated teams. Newcastle had a few interesting options.
I've already mentioned Lascelles who I predict will be starting for England in the near future.
@Pesam
Have you had a look at Lascelles?

Edit: Just realised that we did buy a player from a relegated team. Wijnaldum.
I think @cloggypop deserves some props for calling it.

Wijnaldum is a good player but not sure we need him really.

Hmm, not sure I'd risk him – I'm not a specialist, but I would think muscle tightness can be a sign of a body reacting to overuse, so a bit of rest might be in order. Better miss one game than risk a sprain/tear.

We have Sturridge and Wijnaldum in decent form and raring to go, so it should not be that big of an issue – and even if it does cost us somewhat, I'd much rather take a draw at St. Mary's to Coutinho out for 2 months.

Agreed, can see him at best starting on the bench.

Think the match tomorrow will be tough for us.

Since it's been a day or two since he got the "injury" I think it can be somewhat cured with applying heat and massaging the muscle. I hope he can give us at least 60 mins.

Line up without Lallana and Coutinho would most likely be:

----------------------Karius

Clyne---------Matip-------Lovren-----Milner

-----------Can------------------Hendo
---------------------Wijnaldum
Mané-----------------------------------Firmino
---------------------Sturridge

How is that "calling it"?

I was another who liked him as a player, and said we should buy him, but that may have been just after we played Newcastle and he made Lucas look a total cunt.

Wouldnt take the chance in all honesty. Doubt that long flight made it any better.
Klopp didnt risk Firmino against Chelsea with a similar injury.

Rather miss one game than being out for 4-5 weeks.....

That's one way to see it, but I really don't feel comfortable seeing us play away without both Lallana and Coutinho. That's at least a -3 in the patented 1-10 Modo creativity scale. (Lallana 1, Coutinho 2). Bringing on Wijnaldum might add a 1.

Well he mentioned him first and I wanted to be nice.

Me neither, but losing both of them for more than one game isnt really the way to go.

Don't forget that Firmino is a playmaker too and he will be able to focus more on this side of his game if someone else is occupying the #9 spot. Sturridge, Firmino, Mane and Wijnaldum is a pretty decent front 4, at the very minimum. We also have Origi to give us something different and maybe Coutinho can be fit enough to come on as a sub.

Obviously, but I don't want to see us make too many changes. Yeah changing a mid for a mid might be something I'd understand. Reshaping our midfield and moving Firmino back to accommodate Sturridge is something different. Especially before a difficult away game.

I think @Whirly and @cloggypop were the first to mention Wijnaldum's name here and I started the first thread on him. Not that I knew much about him other than some Youtube highlights.

I mentioned him as well. And was early in regards to Origi. And Firmino.
Think my track record have gone up a bit since the Aquilani and Downing horror show........

So asssuming Coutinho AND Lallana don't make it:

---------------Karius-----------------
Clyne---Matip---Lovren---Milner
-----Henderson----Can-----------
Mane------Firmino---Wijnaldum
------------Sturridge----------------

That line up is too direct imo.

If Coutinho and Lallana are out for a small period of time, we're in a great position to be able to bring in Sturridge and Wijnaldum from our 'squad'. I don't think many teams would have that quality of backup for those players in the league.

I don't reckon I was first. I was first to mention Tadic as a possibility though, when he was still at Groningen and providing the most assists in Europe.

I don't know if you have noticed but we are pretty fucking direct at the moment.
Yeah well, a pass has to come from somewhere and without Lallana and Coutinho that's us without 10 of our 23 assists this season in the league.

The crowd will be on Mane's back - hope it fires him up in the right manner and doesnt make him a candidate for a red.

Strangely enough the 2 players you mention. Lascelles and Redmond are the 2 who are showing me up at the moment. 18 months ago I suggested that Redmond was no more than a decent Championship winger and that Lascelles got bullied too easily and was disappointed that we'd been linked to him!

They both look to have improved considerably and I will probably be wrong on both of 'em. That said, Redmond's move from wing to the centre was an inspired idea and he looks a much better player but I'll wait another 6 months before totally admitting I was wrong about him (but i suspect I am) because he could just be going through a short-lived purple patch c/f Amir Zaki, Michu, Andros Townsend etc.

Lascelles has bulked-up considerably this season and has proved a more physical barrier than previous seasons and could very well play for England in the near future. I have never doubted his ability just his strength so if he continues his current form I'll be wrong about him too.

A narrow loss followed by a period of anger and frustration, then a spell of disappointment evolving into the realization that the boom bust cycle is to be repeated. Possibility of agoraphobia until mid week.
