Actually I agree with Le Chacal today. Torres WAS isolated. It's not simply a question of formation, but when your two wide forwards are as slow as Maxi and Kuyt, and positioned as far away from the striker, it ends up being a negative (or at least an ineffective) formation even if that's not the intention.
I agree. But not for the first half when we constantly had Kelly and Johnson supporting him

It's interesting that Cole hasn't been on the field since Kenny returned. I wonder if he's not applying himself properly in training.

Or maybe Kenny just doesn't fancy him? Hence the links for a move for him, again he's on big money, and is only a fringe player.

Ngog hasn't played since Kenny's been here either has he? He was on for a bit Vs Utd, but I think that's it.

Yeah, but that's not what he was saying, he was saying the setup - playing a defensive midfielder and one upfront was negative, it wasn't. He was isolated because the wide men are slow and, today at least, were poor.
But given that they're so slow, wouldn't it make more sense to play with someone up front closer to Torres? I'd have been very tempted to bring Wash on in the second half. Fresh legs, and he'd have held the ball up better than Torres did today.

Maxi and Johnson fresh and sharp, Meireles clever and Agger pro-active, but Kelly, Gerrard, Torres and Kuyt sluggish. Missed Lucas' energy.

What game was he watching? Maxi was crap, as always

Hodgson would have us winning by now.
Hodgson at Fulham?

He would have had us winning even before we turned up at Anfield. It's an unfair comparison.

A hard fought 3 points and bonus of a clean sheet.

Let's keep it going. Catching Sunderland must be our next goal.

Is it really their main job?

With Cole or N'gog playing off Torres the whole team as a unit would play higher on the pitch. Hence the wingers also providing better support for our strikers.
We are just inviting pressure. We just hoofed the ball for the last 20 minutes.

At least Kenny brought some determiation, fighting spirit and character but football was dreadful

We desperatly need to add a couple of players to the squad though
Yeah, I agree. Off the top of my head, just randomly, I'd suggest a guy from Ajax called Suarez, Chabby Adamso and some guy with an awkward posture called Ashley Young. Would go down a treat.

I hate our crap negotiating.

Phew. Thank god they only got a couple of corners. A lot of nerves today but it's understandable at this point. As many have pointed out we wouldn't have won this a month ago.

Johnson and Raul our best players by far. Skrtel was again poor and we'll remain shaky at the back if he isn't replaced. Poulsen is another, he just hides on the pitch because he's so afraid of fucking up and is next to useless.

Johnson again showed all the attributes needed to play in the wing, I'd like to see it tried at least once.

We played like a team of Charlie Adams' tonight.

Haha night Andy.

Same determination and desire against Stoke with a more positive approach and we'll beat Stoke more compfortably.

Why would they? If the support isn't there from wide (or central), why would the unit push higher? We dropped back because we were worried about Johnson's pace in behind. That wouldn't have gone away because we had two upfront. Two players upfront can become isolated, just as easily as one can. I agree that we probably should have pushed Kuyt inside, to at least put the pressure on, but either way we still have the same problem - no quality or pace outwide, which results in no support.

Tell me why the team would push higher because we have two upfront? It's all chalk board bollocks. If the quality isn't there to provide the support, it isn't there. If anything, as we saw a few times under Roy, 442 just exemplifies the fact and highlights our weaknesses even moreso.

He managed to not mention Rafa; cut the man some slack.

That's difficult enough for him.

whereas the man city negotiatng approach of 'here's my chquebook' and 'here's a pen' is really hot stuff innit?

i'm going to be controersial and say we don't really *need* any reinforcements, because although we're a good 5 or 6 players short of a complete squad, the current lot should really be good enough to coast to 7th and stands a fair chance of 6th. we're not going to get relegated, we're not going to get top 4. no-one really cares if we qualify for the uefa cup, although it's more likely than not that 7th would do it. the 3 players you mention - all good options, i agree - are *all* out of contract in 18 months, and *all* playing for clubs whose circumstances means they're desperate to hold on to them beyond the transfer window.

unless ajax or blackpool suddenly inexplicably surrender their positions, then the canny operator would wait it out and get them a good deal cheaper in the summer.

Well who was it then can't be arsed trawling through this thread.

The match fuck me, we were very lucky to come away with 3 points. If there was ever a game that shows gerrard shouldn't be sitting as deep midfielder its this. Ming was stunning again all over the fucking pitch, lets hope he contines this rich vain of form.

I still don't know who scored, was down in the anny road and couldn't see it.

It's not controversial at all,pete.
