Thought he deserved his own thread.

When did he suddenly become very good? He was below average under Rafa, what happened?

Experience combined with age can sometimes do that to a player.

Sadly unless they're scouse or here from a very young age players rarely get afforded the chance to get that experience here.

He'll never be first team guaranteed material here IMO but he's a valuable squad player.

He has had a few poor games under Kenny but I have been surprised at the level he can play at.
Hard working, tenacious and has a decent eye for a pass.
Probably not good enough to be a regular starter in a side with Champions league ambitions but a good squad player and would not look out of his depth in a mid table side I reckon.

He has always had ability, it was consistency that was lacking.

Perhaps the step-up to the first team has given him more motivation to succeed or maybe it is a blip, but he was great last night (although Wolves were dire).

I used to think he wasn't good enough to make it even as a squad player.
I've been surprised by him since Kenny took over - he loves the club and he's always giving 120% and has developed into a very useful DM. He's certainly made the difference for us in MF more than once.
I agree that he might not be a guaranteed first 11 for us, but it's good to have him as a reliable squad player.

I know the vast majority on here don't agree but I've said all along that Spearing is better than Lucas and I stand by that. He's always been good but he gets suspensions/injuries at inopportune moments. Given a continual run until the end of the season I reckon Lucas will find it difficult to get his place back next season.

Good squad player, good attitude and hard working. I like the lad but he's really not as good as some are making out. I think Lucas is much the better player.

I don't know about him being better than Lucas now, but at the same age he is for deffo.

Lucas is off his crutches and walking by the way.

I argued something along those lines last season when Lucas, Spearing and Meireles formed a very effective trio for a good 8-10 games towards the fag end of the season. They're different players though - Lucas is a holding player, whereas Spearing is more a ball-winning terrier, a poor man's Mascherano so to speak - so a direct comparison isn't really justified.

Having said that, I've seen merit previously in the suggestion that Spearing might actually turn out to be the better player of the two in the long run. While that opinion has been slightly modified with Lucas' drastic improvement this season, I think it's worth bearing in mind that Spearing has had significantly lesser first team exposure, and is likely to keep improving a'la Lucas with more experience, and more playing time.

I thought he was average last night. Went missing a fair few times in the first half and a better team would've punished those spaces he left.

The best praise I can give Jay is that it doesnt worry me anymore when I see his name in the starting lineup.

Followers of the youth and academy have watched Spearing boss games for years. His break just never looked like it was coming. It is great to see him get a chance now.

^^^

Was Lucas a better player than Spearing with as little 1st team game time under his belt? The answer to that is probably no.

And there's reason Spearing hasn't got much first team action. Because the club don't feel he's up to it. I'm not knocking the lad as I like him but he's quite limited and isn't quite the player he's being made out to be. It's a game of opinions obviously.

...and mine would be that your post above is an over-simplification. Lucas is near enough two years older and a lot can change in that time. Two years ago there was no sign from Lucas - IMHO - of the kind of level he reached this season before his injury.

I think it's easy to look good playing in a really limited role like Spearing and Lucas do.

Definitely, if I was going to take up or 'learn' football, I would start as a DM.

I do rate Lucas though. I think he does a smarter job than most.

Of course it can change. All I'm saying is the playing staff obviously saw more in Lucas than Spearing. Some people here do, some don't. That's the nature of things here. I can't predict the future (wish I could) so I guess it's a case of wait and see with this player. He's got my full support

Spearing's a great little player , very decent at winning the ball back and once he has it usually keeps things moving quite quickly . I'd say he's alot quicker in the head than lucas .

But yeah whether he pushes himself into a regular starting position remains to be seen . At the very least i really hope he sticks around , he has the perfect attitude you'd want in a squad player and we need players like that .

Oh and someone commented how he'd be a decent mid table team player , well that's what we are so he's fine here . But even if we do move up i still think he can do a job at the top level we want .

On a sidenote:

Spearing: Wolves game 1st time a midfielder has had the most accurate passes in our own half since Lucas v City

This season he’s started in 10 games in all competitions and when he’s started Liverpool have won 80% of the games.

He played like Gerrard in the reserves.

Aggression, energy, drive, passion, passing, shooting from distance, free kicks and scored a fair number of goals from midfield.

Yep. Anyone who says he is limited is wrong because he has an extremely broad range of talents.

That crossfield pass to Suarez in the Stoke Carling Cup game was the point at which I thought it didn't really matter that Lucas had improved, Spearing just has more ability as well as a solid DM mindset.

I'd love to see how this thread ends if Parker and Modric dominate the midfield next Monday.

I bet it'll go something like "Spearing isnt' good enough...we need a new.....etc etc."

I have always loved Spearing's effort, but I'm not convinced yet.

In other words he suddenly became very good when we won some games and everyone is optimistic.

Modric and Parker didn't contend with Gerrard at WHL either. No way they'll get the freedom of the pitch at Anfield.
